I suppose I need to get my hands on a USB Type-C kabel then.

Does your television not allow you to adjust the picture settings? I've never seen one that doesn't.

Doing that manually each and every evening is tedious.

How come tvOS doesn't support notifications? Imagine having a notifications saying "Someone has broken into your house" at the top right corner while watching Star Wars? Or any notification in general. Would be nice.

I hate the new app switcher (as I hate the one in v8-v9 iOS) .. It's not symmetrical and serves no valuable purpose but to display some book-like and blur effect. (aren't we done with skeuomorphism?) The other thing ... Please , let folders have more than 9 apps , not again ! Also , dedicated weather icon , and game center app would be appreciated. Also , better iTunes music discovery and better local music player. Just , give me some of the things I had on ATV3 ... Is that too much to ask?

I'll take a Siri that understands American spoken English.

Also, please let us choose a black background instead of the default white. I am tired of burning my corneas every time I go to a menu screen on my 60 inch TV.

Apple today provided developers with the first beta of an upcoming update to tvOS, the operating system that runs on the fourth-generation Apple TV and powers its built-in App Store. Today's tvOS beta comes just over one month after the release of tvOS 9.1, the first update to tvOS since it was released in October alongside the new Apple TV.

tvOS betas are more difficult to install than beta updates for iOS and OS X. Installing the tvOS beta requires the Apple TV to be connected to a computer with a USB-C to USB-A cable, with the software downloaded and installed via iTunes.

We don't know what's included in the new version of tvOS, but it's likely to bring expanded features, bug fixes, and performance improvements to Apple's youngest operating system.

The first tvOS update, tvOS 9.1, introduced Siri support for Apple Music, allowing the personal assistant to play content from Apple Music when requested. Siri for Apple Music on the Apple TV works similarly to Siri for Apple Music on iOS devices, enabling queries like "What was the top song in 1980?" or "Play Adele's latest single." It also brought support for the iOS and Apple Watch Remote app, which is now compatible with the new Apple TV.

What's new in tvOS 9.2:

Bluetooth keyboard support - tvOS 9.2 now supports Bluetooth keyboards, allowing a keyboard to be paired to the Apple TV for text entry. This is a major feature that was missing from previous versions of tvOS and its addition should make it much easier to do things like enter passwords.

Folders - tvOS 9.2 includes support for grouping apps in the Home screen into Folders, much like one can do on an iOS device. Folders are a bit buggy on the Home screen, but this will improve in subsequent betas.

MapKit - tvOS 9.2 supports MapKit, allowing developers to implement maps into their tvOS apps.

Siri - Siri now includes support for US Spanish (in the US only) and French Canadian (in Canada only). UK English, Australian English, and US English are now available in the UK, Australian, and US Storefronts when English is set as the tvOS language.

App Switcher - There's a new look for the App Switcher interface in tvOS.

Podcasts - The Podcasts app is now available on the fourth-generation Apple TV.

Very happy with the new ATV. It does a lot for the price and continues to improve. Not having the Remote app updated at launch was lame, but hey it works now. What I really want is for Photos on the ATV to be able to see my iCloud Photo Library. The fact that it can only see your stream (which I don't use) is very un-Apple in my opinion. I'm sure it's just a matter of time, but I expected to see something about it in this beta.

More of a pie-in-the-sky idea is the capability to connect an external drive for media storage.

What is involved in getting it installed before it's on the app store?

There is no indication that Kodi will be coming to the App Store anytime soon. If you want Kodi for the Apple TV in the App Store then look at the app called MrMC which is based off the Kodi code base. Kodi can play more formats then MrMC and Kodi supports Add-Ons and more skins.

There are instructions on how to install Kodi on the Apple TV 4 along with a video showing the steps. It requires you to get a free developers account and you need to download and install XCode on a Mac running 10.10.5 or later.

Doing that manually each and every evening is tedious.

Some TVs allow you to define a preset... you could just change the color temp and save that. On my Vizio you can flip between these presets with a single button.

Yeah, it was.

It has a lot of drawbacks but it's highly customization (though not always easily). It is however a very solid platform for playing back just about any video. You can significantly simplify the interface but it takes some digging through settings. It's still the best solution I've seen to watch you personal video collection while easily being controlled by a remote. Supports about any type of file share. If you really want to get a better idea of it, install the OSX version on a computer. Kind of rough judging it based on something that hasn't been released as a final stable product.

Have you checked out Infuse? I'd say the exact same thing you just said, but about Infuse.

Sorry but could you explain to me what you do with Kodi?

I've side loaded it on my ATV4 and it's the biggest piece of garbage app I've ever used.

The interface is slow and looks awful. I've upgraded the skin to the Eminence skin which is better, but still a garbage interface.

Next, add-ons. I've checked all the popular repo's and installed the big add-ons like Genesis, Phoenix, etc. but they're all VERY slow and most of the time the streams don't even load.

Basically, I can download something, drop in my shared folder, and play in with infuse, which looks great and grabs all the metadata for the movie/tv show.

Sorry to sound like a jerk, but could you explain how Kodi is good?

Infuse does not support VOB or ISO files. Over 90% of my movies are ripped DVDs stored as ISO format files. Kodi will play more video formats. Kodi is very configurable with the UI and has support for multiple skins. I use the Transparency skin. I have been using Kodi for several years and has improved every year. Kodi also has really great developer support on a multiple hardware platforms and OSs.

It doesn't seem tough just a bit time consuming to get everything together, I only install xcode when i need it and looks like I might need it again. Thanks for taking the time.

Hyperbole much? Can really get why this was such a "horrible" experience for people.

I set up two of them, and it really wasn't bad at all. 5 minutes and done. And months of pleasurable usage since.
Maybe not a big problem with alphabets, but it's impossible to input Japanese from the remote (at least in the previous gen) and the iOS app was essential especially with having thousand of characters.
This kept me away from the new Apple TV, but now that it's getting better might buy one once Amazon gets on board.

Just finished installing and setting stuff up. Took me kind of long because I kept messing up small details but I finally got it. So far very happy right now. Netflix, amazon streaming, games, airplay and my home video collection all on one box. Kodi is running better than I expected for the nightly builds. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

We need Native Podcasts on Apple Watch before Apple TV. Why hasn't that happened yet. I want to listen to podcasts in the Gym.

When I got Kodi installed, setup and running to play all my ripped DVDs and BluRays, I packed up and stored my Mac-Mini which was previously doing the streaming duties. I was very happy, plus I now have the Apple TV mounted behind the TV out of sight which is really great. One of the things that I think is really neat is the ability to put the Apple TV to sleep and it turns off the TV at the same time, wake the Apple TV and it turns on the TV. It does take some work to customize Kodi but I think it is well worth the effort. I have read that there is a good possibility that Kodi will be getting HD audio pass thru in future updates for the Apple TV. At least that is what one of the developers of MrMC hinted at.

Amazon stream? Did you install the Amazon add-on on Kodi?

Are you running the TVOs 9.3 beta with Kodi?

Setting this thing up before the remote app was supported and bluetooth keyboard was pretty frustrating.

I almost returned the sodding thing because of the touch pad input entry.

Give me physical buttons Apple!!! Thank goodness I have a Logitech Harmony as i was able to sync the remote and control it this way. I was then shocked it had no bluetooth keyboard entry as my old ATV3 had.

I'm glad Apple saw sense on that.

I'm also very glad they've added folders. My homescreen is currently a total mess!

What is also needed is a backup mechanism to iCloud. As much Apple wanted to push cloud storage for things regarding the AppleTV, I can't believe that this wasn't part of the deal.

This, along with audio sync issues (which wasn't fixed after breaking in 6.1.1 of the previous AppleTV), local library search by Siri, and some major enhancements to the app store (unfortunately not tied to a OS release) are needed

Odd, especially given the lack of native USB-C in most current models.

All current models aside from the single-port MacBook have USB-A ports (presumably a USB-C to USB-C cord would be sufficient for the MacBook unless something really crazy was done). The USB-C port is on the AppleTV itself.
