safari still buggy, scrolling, typing, beachballs page loading, still no improvement with 10.8.1

For you maybe.

----------

Weird thing, sometimes I turn my Magic Mouse off after putting my Mac to sleep, then when I wake it up I get kernel panics.

This happens with both my iMac and Air.

Does anyone now if this is fixed in 10.8.1?

I hate questions like this. What akes you think this is NORMAL for 10.8, to ask if its fixed in 10.8.1?

Your machine needs a format and clean install.

It's actually a fairly big update. Code files are typically only a couple of kilobytes in size. So a 36.4MB update is fairly big. And anyways, Apple probably wants to just focus on the most critical updates first and then move on to the graphical bugs. Plus, this is only the first build.

Yes, but it's not like the changes are somehow compiled into the binary file. Any file that needs to be changed is typically re-compiled and included in the update. Yes, they files typically aren't very large since many of OS X's files are very small in size, but what's included here is not the equivalent of 36.4 megs of code.

Hopefully it address the most critical problem which is the battery drainer from MOuntain Lion .

They need to fix the notification center bug. The only way I get twitter notification is by using Growl and Hiss. Anyone else not getting.twitter notifications?

I'm curious; if you assume that all OS X releases are perfect from day one, then how does your mind even handle the fact that Apple releases bug fixes (like 10.8.1)? Or are they just placebo updates?

He never said that so don't put words in his mouth. If you are having problems such as kernel panics with few others reporting such an issue then have you actually asked yourself whether there is something unique about your setup that is resulting in the problem? did you do a clean install? what other third party applications do you have installed? Regarding the person complaining about beachballing - again, did you do a clean install, what extensions do you have installed? what are your hardware specifications - could it be related specifically to your model? I mean, come on, this is a computer related forum where I'd expect that people here would know some rudimentary troubleshooting techniques.

Tiny little update. I'm not sure what, if anything, was significantly updated in this build: there's no new listed kernel build (the update contains a mach_kernel file, but it's still called xnu 12.0.0, not 12.1.0), no new Finder build and no new Safari build, nor are there any new graphics drivers. Those components are usually the largest targets for system updates.

It looks like the AppleSmartBattery kext was updated (so it might address the battery suckage that some are experiencing). Other than that, this update is entirely devoted to Mail.app and other email-related stuff.

It's really staggering. I deal with this everyday in IT and its amazing how arrogant and ignorant people can be at the same time about their own machine. The things people blame on an OS instead of their own machine can be down right absurd. ie: kernel panics when waking from sleep. How anyone could delude themselves into thinking that this is a bug in the OS, rather than a conflict on their own machine as a result of not clean installing, is beyond me.

That being said, rMBP does not get 30 fps in UI animations. I get 60 fps on my retina while opening and closing folders, dragging finder windows (constant 60 fps) resizing finder windows (constant 60 fps), 40 fps on Expose, 35 fps on launchpad, 52 fps on scrolling in Safari on text based websites, 34 fps scrolling on Facebook which is still better than my 2009 MBP which does it at 25fps. All these numbers are higher than my old MBP. They are slightly lower than my Mac Pro with Radeon5870 which gets constant 60 on expose unless there were too many windows (in that case it also drops) but drops to 35fps on Facebook scrolling as well.

Strange you get such high values with Quartz Debug. We have two rMBP and on both the fps is way lower compared to yours. Strange...

Just did some tests again:
Dragging windows around has max 40fps (most 25-35fps).
Resizing iPhoto with aobut 20 photos : less then 15fps
Resizing iMovie with one project loaded : 10-15fps (max)
Minimising any window to the dock (genie fx) : average of 30fps (iPhoto and iMovie always less then 15fps)
Safari scrolling : 40-55fps

Which rMBP do you have? Maybe higher clocked CPUs have smoother GUI (which I doubt). Ours is the default 2.3Ghz.

BTW I can now say for sure 10.8.1 does not improve battery time in anyway.

My Mid-2010 MBP has been having some problems since the upgrade to ML. It unexpectedly heats up for no reason and the battery life has suffered (going from 4-5 hours to 2 and under now). Screen brightness was also affected. Hopefully Apple irons out all of the major issues with this release.

While there is undoubtedly GUI lag on the new rMBP, I suppose it's acceptable. I don't see much that can be changed, at least within Apple's realistic realm, since graphics acceleration and kexts have always sucked. That said, it's certainly not a game changer. Work gets done and then some, and I appreciate the display resolution.

It's not as bad as everyone makes it seem, but still noticeable if you're the anal type.

Beyond that, I've had no big issues with 10.8 -- it's been much better than some other .0 releases. Only had my bt mouse pointer disappear once or so.

Edit: I tested the Genie effect shrink with this window with the HD4000 and the NVIDIA (gfxCardStatus) -- I don't have Quartz Debug but it was visually apparent that the HD4000 delivered better FPS than the integrated GPU. It looks like Apple can do more software wise to remedy the GUI lag.

Consider, also, that Apple is probably still optimizing drivers for Mountain Lion. I experienced a noticeable improvement with OS 10.8 compared to OS 10.7. Ars Technica measured one too. A GUI lag with a Retina MacBook Pro may be an artifact of the tremendous graphics horsepower that display requires to pump a full size image. But I wouldn't be surprised to see things get a little better as 10.8 is further updated.

Peace,
Gene

I can reproduce the kernel panic on wake when a Bluetooth device that was connected before sleep is not available after waking on several of my Macs, this is both with clean installs and upgrades. It has also been reported by quite a few other people.

There's a blog post on Avatrons site, though its not specifically caused by Air Display as its possible to replicate it on a completely clean install.

I have the 2.7 one, and are you using gfxCardStatus to switch to the discrete card while doing all the testing? The CPU certainly effects the UI animation speed (unfortunately these are not 100% GPU accelerated yet), but I doubt it'd make such a big difference.

10.8 Graphics drivers are somewhat immature, as is with every new OS release. I'm also expecting some more speed ups on GUI after couple more point updates. And it's not only about the GPU, most of these animations use the CPU heavily, so maybe a more extensive quartz update is required to speed up those, I don't know.

In other words, the biggest train wreck in OS X's history continues to be a train wreck with 10.8.1...other than the battery, nothing else is fixed or what?
