I'm wondering if everybody here is content with printing on Snow Leopard? Since I'm on SL I've never managed to get accurate colors again. Not with my Canon Pixma IP4200, nor with the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 of my collegue at work. There seems to be a serious issue with profile handling in colorsync. I have the bad feeling, that this will never be fixed.

Zero issues here, screens are calibrated and we use a RIP solution specific to our output devices - I don't know many professionals who rely on colorsync for this. Colorsync is close enough, but it's not intended for professional output. Just home users who want their photo's to look more or less that same when they print them out..

I disagree, I think it helps the end user. It guarantees that you have the most stable and proven drivers for your hardware. Most of the crashes on Windows systems are because of crap hardware drivers. A good bit of the stability of OSX comes from the fact that Apple is only pushing out proven drivers that are stable (in most cases, yes they do make mistakes from time to time).

Windows is headed that direction as well. Microsoft has been making great strides with Windows 7 to push out drivers via Windows Update and WSUS. They don't push out the latest drivers, they push out the proven stable builds.

Completely agreed.

The good stuff: Cinebench does not crash my mbp 3.1 as does in 10.6.4
The bad stuff: it's 10% slower than 10.6.3

There have been three releases of the driver update package - which one are you running? first? second? or third?

Are you testing it on a 10.6.5 with the driver updates or without them?

Its all very nice to do a two line quip but how about some details as to the nature of your setup.

No lag at all on my end. I have three displays set up, running EyeTV on one, PS CS5 on another and Final Cut Pro on the last. Runs as smooth as silk.

Likewise, even on my old 17" MBP. I have no idea what is going wrong for the OP, but I'd expect he's low on RAM.

And how are they not? Not their fault, apple isn't using all commands in the protocol.

Yes, and I'm sure Apple are doing this because they deliberately want to "Cripple" their machines and give detractors further ammunition. Maybe, just maybe, there's a reason. Same as not allowing hardware acceleration across the board for Flash.

And if they conflict with other drivers and cause a mess, what then?

Then i would say that nothing has changet since time i was using Windows 98. No matter from where drivers come they will have bugs and knowing that there are 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 PC configurations i can't see how this helps.

Mail and Ical Sync issues? Facelift?

I'm really hoping that these core applications are going to get some attention. The basic functionality is sound in both apps, but there could be some tweaks.
I'd like to see Mail get tabs, much like Safari, or Thunderbird Tabs. This could also be a lead into merging Mail and iCal together, along with address book/contacts (iDiary, iOrganise, iSchedule, iEtc.) into one application. You could still turn off the Calendar if you needed to, and I can't see why this would bloat the individual tasks. This alone would speed up my day to day workflow.
Also, I'm using WideMail at the moment to give me options on the way my preview pane can be configured. Surely this could be an inclusion from Apple, and not a third party plug in? Or maybe Plug-ins (Think Safari 5) is the way to go?

If I could program this stuff I'd do it in a second. I'm guessing that Apple probably have the resources covered here!

This one would be fun to hear.

If they bring it to ATI graphics cards I can't wait to see Apple telling Adobe, "well you'll now have to write Flash for two distinct API's" given that the current decoding framework is written by Nvidia and only for nVidia graphics cards. Rather than create a common framework for both you're going to have to write it for two frameworks - oh the joy :D

I wonder though with the driver refresh whether we'll see some improvements in video decoding performance and possibly more hardware supported :D

I think the reason is because the TRIM command is not yet formally finalised in the ATA specification - there's a lot of drafts though.

Ever since 10.6.2, I have absolutely NO issues to report (major or minor) - may 10.6.4 further "perfect" what is already a flawless SL...updated GFX drivers are always welcome...

I had problems only once when i was still using Leopard. One of the later updates shipped had bad wifi driver, so I had to replace them manually from older update (10.5.6 I think). Snow Leopard was rock solid from the start. Speed was a small issue, but 10.6.2 fixed that and 10.6.4 is very fast and stable.

It is far better to buy properly engineered drives.

Dave

Actually, TRIM is far better. Background garbage collection (BCG)is much better than nothing, but without the operating system telling the drive which blocks are free, the BGC is limited to pre-erasing the "spare" (over-provisioned) space on the drive and pages within blocks that it has reallocated.

(Otherwise, the drive firmware would have to walk the filesystem to find out which blocks are free -- something that would be at the top of the "very bad idea" list. For example, some Samsung drives (and other drives with Samsung controllers) with GC only work on NTFS volumes!!! I would never buy a drive that thinks that it can understand the volume metadata, especially while the OS is modifying the metadata! This thread even complains that GC doesn't work under Apple OSX on those drives.)

The best drives support both TRIM and BCG - that should speak volumes!

This stuff is never changed in a point release update. Hold your hopes for 10.7. Some of these products have been on developers minds for the iOS devices, so they may be rolling some of that work back to OS X. Personally, I keep hoping for some of the UIKit classes to be brought to back OS X to make porting easier when it makes sense.

Although I think the mouse will stay on OS X because on a larger screen it is more productive for many tasks. I think it is just a matter of time before it gets touch controls and some level of UIKit support. Who knows... maybe the iPad will be the next trackpad for the Mac complete with app specific controls and menu bar.

Ehh, isn't Colorsync part of Apple's colormanagement system and thus every application "relies" more or less on it, at least when it comes to monitor output?

Colorsync is close enough, but it's not intended for professional output.
Well, great. Let's all buy RIP-solutions for doing things, that worked flawless and accurate before SL. You're quite self-satisfied, aren't you?

Apple has to get better at releasing this and other updates to the public. StarCraft 2 IS currently hosed with the current 10.6.4 drivers. If They fix the problem they have to release the drivers first before the OS update. But they won't of course they will let the users suffer and get creamed in-game by their PC owning counterparts.

It will come out when it is ready. If you want to take risks, join the developer program. I'd rather have them wait then rush out buggy drivers. Even if it means turning off a few special effects in Star Craft.

StarCraft 2 seems to work fine for me with my Nvidia 9600M GT. From my experience though, nVidia chipsets seem to have trouble with Seagate drives. I've tried two different drive models and they both stall out parts of the chipset causing strange latency sending to the video card. Other vendors seem fine... It took me a while to figure out it was the hard drive causing the issues because it didn't seem related and I upgraded the hard drive with continued problems. I actually had AppleCare replace the system board for this issue, but it didn't work. The current Samsung SSD works great. No more lag and screen flickering on the 9400M (also seemed to be related). I have only used Seagate drives that came out after the 9400M, so I think there is some sort of compatibility issue there.

Hopefully - PLEASE ADDRESS THE APERTURE 3.0 PROBLEMS WITH BEING SLOW AND LOCKING UP??

So close it's actually 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 001

I'm glad to see someone else interesting in fixing this problem, especially in terms of syncing with an iPhone. I don't see the need to spend $50 on Things when Mail's notes & todos should just work

I keep forgetting about "To Do's". I started using "Notes" for "To Do's" as they sync wirelessly via MobileMe, yet it would be nice if Apple were to actually make "To Do's" more useful.

Running 10.6.5 for a few days now on a June 2010 Mac Mini, and having no problems. Starcraft II performance is increased, as well as my ability to multi-task while running the game.
