10.10.3 update seed just hit for me, with Photos included. I'm part of the public beta program, not a developer. Update is taking ages.

Glad to see photo books are still there. I was scared they might get the axe.

I'm not sure then why the Verge article was complaining about obfuscating the file system. It does exactly the same thing as iPhoto and Aperture and many other mac apps have always done. Put everything in a package, which is just a folder.

Maybe they got rid of the reveal in finder option?

My biggest concern is if this new app supports folders for albums. That was the main reason I swapped to aperture. This allowed me to sort my library by years, months, etc. I would assume it does, otherwise bringing in my Aperture library would be a mess!

I saw folders in the sidebar on the Verge article, can anyone confirm we can make folders and nest albums in them? Can we also nest a folder inside of another folder?

Thanks!

Does anyone know if the new photos app allows for referenced files on another storage device? Also can you sync more than one iCloud account so that my wife and I can both have pictures from our phones sync up with this new app? Thanks!

once you install it, can you still use iPhoto?

If so, please put that in a sticky at the beginning of this thread...thanks!

I'm hoping they split the app store and iTunes store up to separate apps (combine mac app store with iOS app store) and then create a separate Music/Video app.

Eh, they couldn't do that and expect Windows users to deal with separate apps (points to the abysmal download rate for Safari for Windows). They already have Windows users using iTunes for their iPods, it was just easier to add support for the other iDevices, than to come up with separate apps.

Though I really wish they would break everything out of iTunes that isn't music.

I'm still smarting about Aperture and its non-future as a 'professional' app running on 'professional' hardware.

I don't think I want to even bother trying this - it'll end in disappointment in a couple of years.

I don't think that is the problem. It is just so far removed from what enthusiasts and pros need that it really is a re-thought iPhoto with maybe some of Aperture's adjustment tools added.

It doesn't have projects.
It doesn't have versions.
It doesn't have stacking (one of eight main menus in Aperture).
[Edit] It doesn't have referenced storage.
It doesn't have even 1% of Aperture's metadata features (another main menu in Aperture).
It has maybe half of Aperture's adjustment tools.

Today, photo library management has taken a step back. No application still can match what Aperture offered. It's a sad day.

Makes me wonder then if this app will become more powerful over time. Start small, nail the basics and add over time...

Lightroom has become more powerful over its eight years of existence and it still cannot match Aperture in the area of image organisation.

No Update Showing

I am a beta user and can't get the update to show up for 10.10.3. Any suggestions?

No you cannot do that. If you want to share pictures, you can use the family photostream. Or use a third party service with a shared login such as amazon prime photos or something of that sort.

Of course you can, but they cannot share a library (and once you convert your iPhoto library you cannot go back, thus first make a copy of it).

What metadata adjusting tools does the new Photos app have? Can you still adjust date/time to correct improperly timed photos?

photos app would be nice but i won't touch Yosemite again until they confirmed the wifi is working its been a mess since i upgraded my 2013 retina macbook pro 15" which is a real bummer because i liked it a lot but having a $2700 laptop that can't connect to the internet is a waste to me so its mavericks until they get their head on straight.

WiFi woes appart, for me one big issue is on the sluggyness of Yosemite, especially when resizing Finder windows. Try it! It really is a slideshow. I wish they could bring Maverick's speed back before adding other features...
