There was a time when Apple was pushing full screen mode as a solution to a cluttered desktop, but didn't seem to realize that full screen mode sucks on really large displays and that people are often working with one or two apps at once and don't want to have to switch back and forth all the time.

Stage manager seems to be them finally acknowledging how people work on Macs. Hell, the renewed attention Apple is paying to the Mac is a breath of fresh air. I always found iPads to be restrictive.

The only thing that I immediately noticed and am not crazy about is that you can’t use split screen view with stage manager. I frequently need to see two apps side by side.

Not impressed with the new single window interface for configuring display settings or wallpaper.

1. When using a laptop with an external monitor as the main display, the settings always opens with the laptop screen selected. This results in changing settings for the wrong display.

2. When multiple monitors of the same model are connected, it is no longer easy to identify the monitor when trying to arrange them. Clicking and holding the mouse button on one of the monitors no longer highlights the screen like in older MacOS versions.

3. Apple should bring back the multi-window interface which displayed a separate window on each monitor so users easily know which monitor they are configuring. Users should have the option to switch between single window and multi-window configuration modes.

This new single window interface for display and wallpaper settings looks like something from Microsoft Windows. It looks like it was created by summer interns who have never used MacOS before, and did not bother to test usability with more than a single display connected.

I would send Apple this feedback, you are not the only one for sure who needs this. If enough people say something they might introduce a way to toggle a split screen option.

I already have this feature - I toggled Stage Manager on and off

I played around with it and like the snappiness of windows opening from a side icon and closing again when another is selected but like many I often have more than one window open at a time in order share or compare data.

My other work round is to use two screens - then you have two sets of stage manager icons but two windows open at a time

edit after playing around a bit more:

if you drag the icon rather than click - it opens up to allow two windows at a time and further if you have two set up as split screen the pair come and go if you click the background

perhaps more features still to uncover

I salute the brave souls that install beta software! 🤞I used to on a secondary machine, but this is such a big change I'll see how it goes with others first. Many thanks!

When full screen mode was first introduced in 10.7 Lion, setting an application to full screen caused all other connected monitors to go blank and become unusable. In a later MacOS version, full screen mode was changed so other monitors remained usable. But this was done through the bizarre “Displays have separate spaces” setting which results in application windows no longer able to display across multiple monitors. It is odd and disorienting to see a window moved across the edge between 2 monitors and then the part of the window that should be on the other monitor is missing. If you turn off “Displays have separate spaces”, the windows can stretch across monitors but setting an application to full screen will once again blank out all other monitors.

I never understood Apple’s bizarre implementation. Microsoft Windows has the ability to show the taskbar on all monitors, to have windows stretch across multiple monitors, and to have an application run in full screen on one monitor without blanking out other monitors, all at the same time. But on MacOS, users are forced to choose between which of these features they want to have.
