I'm still amazed at how such a large and rich company, with such a tiny and very tightly controlled range of products, can so screw such basic things up each time.

If Apple made a dozen phones, a dozen iPads ect ect all with different CPU's, screen resolutions etc etc then I could forgive them, but really. This should not be acceptable from a supposed brand leader.

Esp, as I said given their extremal small range of products and the length of time they have had to get this right before launch.

Does anyone know if iTunes 10.5.1 beta is needed to install this?

No - it's not. Yo can use the regular iTunes 10.5 to install iOS5.0.1 beta 1, then OTA to IOS5.0.1 beta 2

Glad they can fix this sort of thing via an update. But it does call into question their "real-world" testing: how come this battery life issue wasn't spotted before.

People felt the perception of a battery life issue was caused by the use of the more power intensive applications, like setting a Reminder to notify you of something when you entered or left a geographic area.

Most of the people who appeared to be having the issue seemed to be doing something odd like that, and they had to make a decision whether or not to release the firmware with those features enabled.

According to many people, they made the wrong choice.

It's possible, however, that the vast majority appreciate having the choices available, even if the choices cause excessive consumption of power because the device has to stay connected to GPS to determine when you've done something. It should be made clearer to people that if you've ever activated Location Services for the Reminder application, you will have to physically, manually disable it even if you no longer have an active reminder!

There are many other such features that consume extra battery power, as many people have noted in this thread and elsewhere.

It might've been apt to have a firmware popup on a setting change, "Are you sure you know what you are doing?"

:)

Please understand that I am *NOT* claiming that battery life issues are 100% the fault of the users. There is clearly room for improvement in areas that are not under the direct control of the users, and I have faith in Apple that battery life will be improved in the very near future without sacrificing operability in other areas.

In the mean time, I am okay with getting just one day out of my iPhone battery.

Doing something "odd" like that? It is a touted feature for crying out loud.

They must be replacing the entire OS, then.

Makes you wonder what is borked so bad that they can't patch it with a delta.

For the love of gawd, I hope it makes my 3GS act like an iPhone again as opposed to my old Treo 650. I have not been able to use it as an iPod (syncing problems) since I upgraded to 5.0.

I think I found a bug in beta 2, re music player.

Music syncs to the iPhone 4s, but the playlists do not.

Anyone else with the same problem?

Cheers!

It's my experience that the battery life sucks simply b/c the phone never goes into standby. My activity and standby usage is almost always identical. Fix that issue and I won't have any problems.

That might be a problem for some, I myself got about 3hrs use and 17hrs standby out of one full charge. So nothing to do with standby mode:)

Sent my phone back and hoping to get better battery life from a new phone.

Yeah, tat's pretty crummy battery life. I wonder with some many people reporting so many different issues, how anyone could find a root cause.

push notifications

It's my experience that the battery life sucks simply b/c the phone never goes into standby. My activity and standby usage is almost always identical. Fix that issue and I won't have any problems.

With past iphones, I had this problem often. In my experience, it's push notifications that's hung on one or more apps. Many times, I fixed it by turning off all push notifications (used to be easier before ios5), then restarting the phone, then turning on the push notifications that i reallly cared about (which are just a few). I never could get it down to one app...it seemed to always be different apps...sometimes facebook or words with friends or skype. Give this a try to see if your usage times improve. With my old iphone 4, i would get pretty good battery life.

Now with ios5 (on iphone 4 or iphone 4s), i get piss poor battery life. The biggest thing that has helped me with the new OS is to turn off push email. All other things has not helped at all. I tried turning off all location services, all push notifications, etc. Anything everyone has suggested has not helped. I still don't get anywhere near what I used to get. Hopefully apple really has fixed the issue (from what I've read, they may have fixed the location services time zone thing - big deal). I hate having to keep my phone plugged in almost 24/7 just to use it.

downgrade to iOS 5.0

I'm returning my iPhone 4S before the 30 day window expires. How can I downgrade to iOS 5.0 from iOS 5.0.1 beta 2?

Caller ID issue

Please can anyone confirm whether the caller ID issue is resolved with this update or not?

Thanks a lot!
