Try to go a little away from the base station, you'll notice. I have a 2 floor apartment and it was perfectly okay to use wifi on both floors w/2.2 software. Now I cannot get a connection on the other floor, so it must be because of 3.0 changed something.

I live in a 2 story house with a basement. OS 3.0 on 3GS in a case.

My router is in the basement and I am able to get my wifi in the backyard, front, garage, main floor and all up on the second floor without any drops.

Currently on the 2nd floor with 3/3 wifi bars bluetooth is also enabled, disable makes no difference.

I'm on a first gen and 3.0 completely broke my wifi. Completely. Everything was working fine before 3.0. After 3.0 I have half my original battery life and ZERO wifi. How can apple put out software that breaks their hardware and then not give us any options? The least they can do is let me downgrade so my phone works again.

The "genius" at the store said they are aware of the '3.0 wifi problem' although apple hasn't made an official statement. He said that hopefully 3.1 will fix the problem. It's not looking likely. Does anyone know if it's truly fixed?

i recently replaced my iphone 3g running 3.0 to an iphone 3g on 2.2.1 and its incredible how much cleaner and smoother it runs. So for now im not upgrading to 3.0 until 3.1 is officially released. can anyone confirm that 3.1 is indeed faster than 3.0?

That sounds like a pretty unfortunate situation with the wifi, I haven't heard anything about a fix in 3.1 but then again, my 3G works fine in 3.0+

It was a surprise though when my phone stopped working while I was out of town due to "expired software" (I had 3.1 beta 1 still as of last night).

I had to find a caribou coffee to go online with my mbp and download beta 3 in order to get the phone working, how unpleasant! my fault I know for not putting on beta 2 before then.

wouldnt have made a difference. beta 2 expired yesterday too. it was supposed to happen at midnight device local time, but mine just up and died a bit after 2pm. beta 3 should have come out a week ago IMO

Unfortunately 3.1 is a lot like 3.0.

By the way... I've downgraded to 2.2.1 again because it ran so much smoother and cleaner. Even when you're playing music in 2.2.1, the OS doesn't bog down much. 3.0/3.1 is horrible with that kind of stuff. Enjoy 2.2.1 because I think it's the last OS that is going to run nice on the old iPhone 3G hardware.

Thanks, I do have an App installed that gives me Emoji but when I get an SMS with a :) it's still a :) and not a
Smiley%20Face.jpg

The other person sending you a SMS needs to have emoji on their phone aswell and be using the emoji icons in order for you to see the proper icon.

No they don't. I've sent emoji to people with iPhones and they ask me, "how the hell did you do that?"
All they need is an iPhone running 2.2.1 or higher, and they'll see the emoji just fine.

That's correct. I don't understand what the big deal is with making it available world-wide vs. just for Japanese iPhones. I guess somethings we'll never get.

Please can you direct me to a step-by-step on downgrading to 2.2.1. Every time I've tried I've run into errors. Do I need an older version of iTunes? Any tips, tricks, hints or suggestions would help. I'm on an original 2g, recently jailbroken (hoping I could find a fix for my wifi, but didn't).

Thanks.

Good luck man! 2.2.1 is going to be a nice breath of fresh air.

I have 3 things that they need to fix but I don't know if it's apple or At&T.

1. Turn on MMS for users.
2. When receiving TxT message turn off who they are from. Like it the old way when it just said "New Text Message"
3. Have video for Iphone 3g users...

That's all I ask.

2. I think I'd rather it say who it's from.
3. I know someone who had a jailbroken iphone 3g with video.

Anytime you downgrade the OS, from what I read on the iPhone Dev site, you run a high risk of killing your phone permanently because of the baseband. Now, I don't know if the baseband was changed for the 2G iPhone, so it might be possible for that one without any trickery. Do beware when using the linked method though.

*Edit: Sorry, just re-read the original post. It was a 2G iPhone being referred to. Still, serves a good warning for anyone with 3G/3GS iPhone thinking of downgrading.

1. 2.2.1 will not kill your phone just because you're on a different baseband.
2. You can't downgrade an iPhone 3GS anyway.
3. My iPhone has been working fine on a downgraded 2.2.1 since May. I've upgraded and downgraded multiple times too.
4. The baseband was not changed for the original iPhone.

An iPhone hasn't been bricked in a very long time.

Any chance you can show me the page where you read that stuff from the Dev site?

I know that 2.2.1 will not kill your phone. However, for a 3G (I am aware that 3GS cannot be downgraded), the 2.2.1 s/w needs to be modified in a way to avoid downgrading the baseband. I'm not an expert with this particular thing and I'm sorry, I don't want to go digging around for that post I read months ago. There are ways of safely downgrading the baseband and they're all over google (one is here: http://www.iphone-hacks.com/2009/04/19/dowgrade-iphone-3g-baseband-from-23003-to-22800). But I do know that you cannot just downgrade the 2.2.1 s/w and expect all to be ok with 3G phones.

Downgrading to 2.2.1 does NOT downgrade the baseband. I don't think there's a "safe" way to downgrade the baseband.

Is that the case for this specific downgrade? Because I do remember this being an issue for downgrading the other OS 2.x.x bundles. If I'm wrong, cool. Better for everyone else :)

The software did not need to be modified to avoid downgrading the baseband because downgrading to 2.2.1 does not modify the baseband at all. I'm on 2.2.1 with baseband version 05.10.01.

What happens when downgrading is iTunes gets confused because it sees the newer baseband puts you back in recovery mode. The official 2.2.1 is actually installed on your iPhone, it just won't boot up. That's why you have to use QuickPwn in Windows to kick the device out of recovery mode and boot up. QuickPwn sends an "fsboot" signal to the iPhone and it boots up. Pretty cool.

As far as I can tell, the modem firmware is not affecting my 3G signal at all and my iPhone still acts like it always has except for the fact that it's running much better in 2.2.1 than 3.1 (beta 3).

Just FYI, I just downgraded to 2.2.1. I'm on an original 2G and I didn't even need to use Windows Quickpwn. It downgraded with Pwnage and worked perfectly, even with iTunes.

Only problem is: I still don't have wifi. I was under the impression that to fix my wifi, I'd need to downgrade the baseband as well, but I'm just not ready to mess with that hack. The only reason I tried the downgrade in the first place was to fix the wifi...it didn't fix it. So I'll probably upgrade back to 3.0 just because some of my software won't work with 2.2.1. Oh well. At least I gave it a shot.

The original iPhones baseband didn't get upgraded. Plus the baseband is referring to the cell radio not the wifi one.

When I go to "about" it says my Modem Firmware is 04.05.04_G - it upgraded along with 3.0 but will not downgrade no matter what firmware I install. I thought, perhaps, that had something to do with it.

3.0 did not update the baseband on the original iPhone.

It didn't upgrade the baseband on the 2G, but it did on the 3G:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_OS_version_history

A lot of people have this issue since the 3.0 update. Some of them have it directly, others experience the problems after a couple of days. There's a long tread going on about this on the Apple forum and by now we've reached the point that the baseband upgrade caused the problems

I downgraded from 3.0 to 2.0.2. without wifi, and an upgrade to 2.2.1 didn't help either. I can't download my baseband due to my 5.09 bootloader but I'm pretty sure that the baseband upgrade caused this. According to the wiki page, every beta of 3.1 has had a baseband upgrade so far. Has anyone with 3.1 beta 3 experienced any wifi difficulties?
