Because Apple/Steve Jobs dont put as much effort into their mac lineup? Just look at the Mac Pros, theyre outdated and the imacs run circles around them. Clearly Apple doesnt care much.

The Mac Pros are roughly 1 year old and coming up on the end of their current cycle. Updates will be happening soon.

The only iMac that beats any '09 Mac Pro is the 27" i7 2.8 GHz, which just edges a base model 2.66 GHz quad core MP.

All others will run circles around ALL iMacs.

- Please point me to some information about FAT filesystems that says that a filename cannot begin with the two characters '._'

FAT filesystems use the 8.3 filesystem (even with long file names which are generally stored under FAT as longfi~1.doc instead of longfilename.doc - the full file name being kept in metadata). Therefore the . is reserved for the file extension.

The underscore character is perfectly valid though.

I hope 10.6.3 fixes the Intel graphics problem where sharpening photos in iPhoto, Aperture and Preview causes the screen to corrupt and sometimes the Mac to become unresponsive, from forums it seems that many other users with Intel graphics have had this problem, I reported it quite a while ago.

Other than this very annoying problem, Snow Leopard has been fine for me.

Seconded. This is a big issue for me as well, as one of the things I was attempting to within iPhoto was touch up old, scanned-in photos. I didn't realize the problem also affected Preview and Aperture. If it affects all three then I hope they've figured out a fix for things by now.

10.6 has been underwhelming for me, however I wouldn't call it unstable. I am upset that my (admittedly ancient) scanner doesn't like 10.6 anymore, although I can still use it with my old laptop. Just my experiences.

if i could disable flash then i would... might stop my 27" iMac freezing on Safari all the ****ing time!!!!

Safari >> Preference >> Security Tab >> uncheck Enable Plug-ins

or /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ <move Adobe flash plugin to Disabled Plugins folder>

Note this sentence in the link you quoted:

The Windows FAT and NTFS file systems are not limited to 8.3 file names, because
they have long file name support, but they still support the 8.3 version of
long file names.

In any event "._bs" is a valid FAT name 8.3 name. The "." is not stored,
it is implicit. The filename (the "8" part) is a zero length string "". The extension
(the "3" part) is "_bs".

Since Windows and the carbon Finder can handle "._*" - it does
look like something broke in the Cocoa Finder rewrite.

Based on what?

Next time think of these items:

1) Internal expandability
2) Upgradability
3) Ease of #1 and #2

I think that whilst the CPU has sped up on the iMac, I doubt too many other things are significantly "faster".

Besides, CPU isn't where the performance issues are anymore. It's that spinning disk that you store all your data on.

Oh ok, so then weres garbage collection for SSD support in OS X? Apple sells their macbook air with an SSD but no proper support for it.

#1 and # 2 are invalid points. Where is crossfire or SLI support? Why do mac pros use FB DIMM ram when the latency is greater compared to the DDR equivalents? Where is bluray support? Etc?

Wow...The title of this thread is "Apple Seeds Mac OS X 10.6.3" correct?
After the first page of posts about what we want this point release to address, the whole thread goes totally off topic....There seem to be a lot of Apple "haters" posting about how Apple doesn't care about there products anymore, how there machines suck lately, how Windows 7 just works better than SL... If that's the case, then why post in here & fill the thread up with pages of nonsense. There are actually some of us, myself included, that like to read comments from actual developers who have installed this point release & are sharing there experiences with it.

Just my 2 cents....
Carmine.

I totally agree with you, however, the first thing that comes to mind when a product doesnt work is to complain for most people at a forums site. I would really like to listen to developers here and what they have to say about the point release, but rarely do you ever hear from developers at macrumors. If you read the beginning of the forum you saw that i complained about heat and the expose issues, do you know of the best place to email apple about my issue? I know they have a fairly big tech support area but i thought that was mainly for issues YOU have with the computer, not bugs in the os. Perhaps we should create some sort of bug reporting area at macrumors that we could send to apple? just a thought

The consumer always has the greatest impact, because WE buy the product. If we didnt complain about the faults, companys wouldnt push their technology forward as much as we'd like them too.

I still stand by my demand for SSD support. Theres no reason for apple to be selling a macbook air with SSD for over a year (nearly two now) and not have garbage collection in OS X 10.6. I've been meaning to buy an SSD drive for a long time now, and I have a feeling a proper firmware with TRIM will be implemented into all SSD drives before apple does anything significant.

Call this complaining if you want.

When I first started having the problem I downloaded demos of Aperture and Lightroom, it happens in Aperture but not Lightroom, it doesn't happen in Photoshop Elements either so it appears to be a problem specific to Apple imaging software.

Apple claims that you can get an expert to call you about any technical question you may have:

http://www.apple.com/support/expert/

I'd be interested to hear what their response is really like if you give it a try.

For email feedback you can use this online form:

What about the 'error -36' one regularly gets while copying files/folders from Mac on to a USB drive?
It's not just me. Google it and you'll see many more are affected by this. Tried almost everything suggested. 'error -36' still shows up!
The only way around is: Copy files one-by-one. Coz once you drag-n-drop an entire folder, the error -36 pops up!
I hope Apple fixes this. It's an irritating bug![/QUOTE]

Make sure your thumb drive is formatted correctly in disk utility.
Mac OS Extended Journaled and not fat32.
This solved my problem with the error.

I have a MacBook Pro 5,1 and I've never seen my screen blink. I think you have a defective Mac my friend. Take it to Apple instead of waiting for a software fix. Mine is fine.

Living not in USA sometimes xxx a lot. Distributors in Lithuania stopped replacing 5.1 saying that Apple knows the issue and owners should wait becouse Apple is trying to solve it and release an update. If nothing happens after 10.6.3 gonna have mother card replaced... That was promised for me. If this wont help - i'll start using pc ;DDD

Surprised that anyone heard about this problem. After installing snow leo the screen started blink when higher performance mode is on - describing the problem, it looks same like iMacs thats why everybody was expecting a fix at the same time as imacs'. Well, whatever ;D just a bit fed up and angry.

Where do you find the settings to change the performance mode?

Wait, wait, wait. SSD is NOT supported? i thought by "supported" you meant "working" on my Mac. Do you mean my SSD could be more "fast"? Or just that there's something buried deep down OS X that prevents SSDs from working right? Does Windows (not trying to create a fight :D) have this kind of support?

64-bit filesystems on 32-bit systems don't have a "4GiB" limit.
Don't you have ISO files for DVDs that are over 4 GiB?

I feel your example does not apply. You can store any size file on an HFS+ partition (well not any really) but in the case of an app a 64 rendition of it would only help in the case that particular app needed to access more than 4GB of RAM. That was my point. I feel that a 64 bit iTunes would have nothing to offer presently. Still when it happens I believe and hope that it will be better no so much of the 64 bit thingy but because they will re-write it as a cocoa application (well, as I said, I hope).

...and Apple calls Adobe lazy? Apple should re-write the very old iTunes. I'm betting Adobe's Creative Suite has a lot more code in it than iTunes.

Your speeds will degrade over time without TRIM support. Good SSDs don't degrade terribly anymore, but without TRIM, they will never remain at their full speed.

Who says the aren't? iTunes 9 has a very cocoaesque feel, it could be a result from some big internal project.

Oh... so is "Cocoaesque feel" the same as Cocoa? I don't think so. In order for Apple to make iTunes 64 bit, they have to make it 64 bit Cocoa, not Cocoa-esque with a 64bit-esque feel.

And what would be the point of a 64-bit iTunes? What advantages does Cocoa have over Carbon that affects iTunes? And iTunes seems to be built with a some old Carbon code (that still works well and is not in any way obsolete) and some Cocoa spritz here and there.
