I'm glad Apple keeps focusing on graphics drivers. These have been terrible in OS X for quite a while and it's time for Apple to step up its game, especially with Steam rolling in next week. When the same games don't run as well in OS X as they do in Boot Camp, this becomes ever more apparent.

Yup. SC2 performance is 60% what it is for me in Bootcamp.

I hope this update fixes my [obscure problem here]. It's been broken since the [several years ago] update. Also, while this news is exciting, I'm really waiting for Apple to refresh the line of [Apple product totally unrelated to this post]. [jab at flash here]

For a newbie, you certainly have captured essence of the typical MR post quickly!

Not to worry. Updates always overwrite system files so the OS doesn't expand 500+ MB per update :)

I was wondering about that too actually. Good to hear it's just an overwrite not something to make it more and more sluggish.

Fixed it for you ;)

Anyway, its about time. Graphics drivers have been sore spot on OS X far too long. I honestly don't think this will bring them on par with Win side but every improvement is still appreciated. I hope this means h.264 acceleration for cards with the necessary HW but lack support on driver side. Ok, wishful thinking... but hey, you never know.

Not that your message warrants a response, but a large part, if not all, of that update replaces existing files, so it's not increasing the installation size by 500+ MB each time.

But now that you "warranted" my post with a reply, I know that those files are overwritten.

I agree with the sentiment (Apple's drivers and OpenGL implementation have always been subpar), but Apple already started working on this in the last update, where we finally got OpenGL 3.0 support. (Which is still outdated, though).

genius. LMFAO!!! i hate flash and i genuinely appreciate every product i've bought from apple and saw no shortcomings in any device other than my emac 17" omission of usb 2.0 but man that was a funny post even if i am an unabashed fanboi

maybe fix for the 1680 display 'black screen'?

Anyone know if this 10.6.4 update includes a fix for the user-reported problems of 10.6.3 update sometimes causing black screen if the attached monitor was an external 1680 pixels?

My Mini is staying at 10.6.2 since my main monitor is 1680, till some future update...

(Though, if I get lots of extra time, I guess I could try to update with a different monitor... then fall back and restore if issues... nahhhh, I'll wait.)

I'm hoping this fixes my issue of my Macbook Pro not waking when I open the lid.

That's a pretty nasty one that has happened to me an my colleague on our MacBook Pro's a few times and also on my girlfriend's MacBook.

Next time it happens, take a close look at the display and you will see that the video is probably there, only it's very very faint and difficult to see. It's as if the backlight doesn't come on properly or something – but the computer is on. It works to log in to it remotely (SSH) and everything is fine (except the video of course).

This hasn't happened on my MBP yet - but have you tried turning the brightness back up? Just in case? I mention it because if I turn the brightness riiiight down on my MBP I can still very very faintly see the video on the screen.

So has anyone idea what GraphicsDrivers are we talking about here? Hardware h.264 acceleration for ATI and Nvidia 8xxx cards?

10.6.3 introduced a major bug in the 24" imac's graphic driver causing the driver to crash at random moments leaving the screen in an all white or all black state. a reboot is required to restore the system. Hope they release this update soon as it will probably fix this issue.

Bravo, sir.

One of the better posts.

hahaha... in the last sentence, a question about whether to "buy now or wait until the refreshed models come out" would also be in order...

great observation!

cheers!

Yessssss graphics drivers. Let's hope it improves Starcraft 2 performance in OS X. Under bootcamp it is wayyyyyyyyyy superior. Obviously there should be an expected performance hit but not as big as it is currently.

Talking of VPN, I wish Apple would implement CISCO VPN in full...

Didn't they? My Snow Leopard connects great to our IPSec Cisco VPN at work. It didn't work at all under Leopard, I had to use the Cisco VPN client to get it to work.

Now, the snow leopard one is great, and I couldn't use the cisco one if I wanted, because it won't run in 64bit.

I have to agree with you. Come on and give us some sweet nVidia drivers !

SMB to my windows machines has been a nightmare

Yep they broke SMB with 10.5 and I think got it fixed around 10.5.4; they broke it with 10.6, so maybe they'll fix it again with 10.6.4? It is at the moment ridiculously slow, and not great if you're trying to show someone something in OS X.

Apple's implementation of CISCO VPN doesn't support IPSec over UDP.

I have to use the unreliable CISCO VPN which results in kernel panics - on average one every day.
