Hopefully this will:

A. Continue to smooth out graphical performance on the Unibody Macbooks with the 9400M as 10.6.3 did.
B. Fix the issues that 10.6.3 introduced (I think 10.6.2 might have been altogether smoother for me, even if .3 fixed a lot of problems).
C. Implement TRIM or the equivalent (I can dream, right?)

I hope this update fixes my [obscure problem here]. It's been broken since the [several years ago] update. Also, while this news is exciting, I'm really waiting for Apple to refresh the line of [Apple product totally unrelated to this post]. [jab at flash here]

..."And I hope Safari gets snappier" ;)

Anyone still getting occasional unresponsiveness in Finder - like when scrolling, renaming files etc.?

The problems with SMB can't be fixed by Apple. SMB is being rewritten completely by the Samba group.
Of course it can be fixed by Apple. Just contribute to the project or ship your own off-the-mainline fixes. How can they be gearing towards enterprise and Exchange integration without SMB working? This is not something you break like this. It is irresponsible, IMO.

10.6.4. is going to be a huge update for me. My QNAP NAS drive is essentially worthless until the SMB issue is fixed. I can't copy to or delete files on the drive at all. And this is on a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. Some users use workarounds, but the workaround does not work for me at all.

"Resolves erratic trackpad or keyboard issues with USB"
I also have this issue on my Mac Pro. My keyboard will stop responding. I have to unplug my keyboard from the USB port and plug it back in. 2 big issues I'm having.

You don't know what you're talking about.

Then enlighten me on why can't they help fix it. Samba is open source, OS X is almost entirely built upon both original and custom open source projects. What stops them from finding out the problem before its shipped and fixing it before hand (like apparently they're doing on 10.6.4)?

My point was that they could have fixed it (so much that they do in 10.6.4) but they failed to test it properly before shipping. Don't tell me that " don't know what [I'm] talking about" regarding development of software. It's my work to develop software.

Apparently those with easily configurable SMB servers can work around this by editing smb.conf. But those with closed off NAS units are likely screwed until 10.6.4 comes along.

My AL iMac came with Tiger and had GREAT graphics... Leopard downgraded that and SL was no improvement.. none. With this upgrade my graphics were pristine... as we say in Las Vegas, Fabulous... that lasted for two seconds when the screen popped back to its normal set. For a while it looked like I was about to get even better resolution but nope. How is it that M$ can make a mouse pointing arrow sharp and clear and OSX can not? Oh the shame...:apple::mad:

First of all: What?

You need to clarify what you are really talking about.

Are you talking about gamma? screen resolution? or the scaling of the mouse pointer?

If your mouse pointer is blocky then adjust the scaling in Accessibility.
I don't understand why Apple haven't made vectorised adjustments to the mouse sprite either, the scaling algorithm is terrible and is perhaps one of the most noticible flaws on OS X.

If it's a blurry display, try resetting nvram.

If it's a resolution issue, is it set at the native resolution of your TFT?

These update sizes are a bit outrageous. Snow Leopard should have cooked for longer.

I second that; and the fact that Apple kept going on about how much Flash sucks and how video acceleration won't fix anything up - then suddenly merge it in with 10.6.3 with little in the way of real world testing and worse part of that is the API is bound to Nvidia thus there will never be any support for ATI graphics cards.

All I can say is that if WWDC turns out to be a giant disappointment as so far as nothing being said abut the future of Mac OS X 10.7 and doing something about long standing issues - next year will be the year of the Windows PC for me.

It is quite clear that Apple has an i-device fetish with everything else taking second priority to it. If Apple isn't interested in computers then it is their right to do so but lets stop the charade of actually giving a toss when it comes to Mac OS X on the desktop.

Why and what

Why, (thankfully), the few uncivil and rude replies? I just don't see a place for them. Let's just learn and share and if someone is wrong be nice and explain why, for everyone's benefit.
Graphics drivers are my concern. Ever since I bought the GTX285 when they first came out I've been wanting it to outperform the 4870 I replaced. It's gotten better but never has it been worth the extra money I paid for it.
It's said, and I've come to believe it, that Apple can't make Nvidia drivers worth a darn. But obviously the potential is there and I feel that it's about time for a real effort on Apple's part. The 4870 is a great card but let's see Apple pay some attention to the only other brand of card we can choose.
No fuss, no muss though, I love my Mac. :)

Thank you for the tip on Accessibility... I forgot that I enraged the mouse to a slightly larger size... put it back to normal and I am very happy now... Thank you very much... how could I have had such thoughts about Apple... oh the shame...

So the problem with the enraged mouse has been solved.

Now can anyone tell me how to make the pointer revert to the arrow after I have been using another cursor in another app? It remains something I must find like a needle in a haystack when I return to the Finder.

From what I read over at Arstechnica Apple has a very restrictive number of engineers meaning they have to really triage things tightly to meet targets; which means that small optimisations are ignored in favour of big targets. The problem with such an approach is generally it isn't the big things that cause horrible performance it will be a number of small things here and there that when added up together product a horrible experience.

Windows 7 isn't a release of big changes but a whole heap of small changes that result in a significant improved experience - something that Apple can learn a lot about. Mac OS X doesn't need big changes but a whole heap of smaller changes focusing solely on bug fixes, fixing short comings, unifying the UI and so on.

Potential iPhone Release Date?

Historically, how soon after the announcement do they release the iPhone?

They might be opting for Samba 4 in 10.7 seeing as the Samba Group has been taking for ever to get through Alpha builds.

I think many users don't want to wait for 10.7. Rumors in the web says the release date of 10.7 is spring or summer 2011. If Apple doesn't want to upgrade to 3.5 (experimental SMB 2 support) it would be helpful with min. 3.4.

I agree. OS X is a good OS. But indeed it just needs those small changes like:
- cut 'n paste functionality (I doubt Apple will ever add this).
- Quicktime hardware acceleration for more formats (h264, mkv).
- Implement the TRIM command for SSD's.
- Update OpenGL and SMB drivers.
- Better native NTFS read/write support (I know it's allready in SL, but it's quite slow..).

And to take full advantage of the posibilities SL has to offer, software developers should make better use of openCL, Grand-Central Dispatch, etc.
