I'd like that, too, but it's kind of a chicken-and-the-egg problem. Why should Apple make drivers for it if there aren't any apps for it? And why develop apps for it if there's no support in the OS? Hopefully someone puts an end to it & develops something w/ OpenGL 4.x.
How do developers create and test apps to work with OpenGL 4.x when their OS and drivers don't support it?

The OS needs the OpenGL frameworks first. Even as a developer only beta with known rough edges. Same as Snow Leopard needed to add Grand Central Dispatch before developers could develop using it, or LLVM support in Xcode, etc...

The issue is that if sometime in the future the tech starts being viable, and only the current version of OS X (v10.9 lets say) supports it, it puts devs in a position where there isn't really much point in adopting the tech if only a fraction of their users actually have it.

EDIT: It also puts the devs in a position where they have to balance the imbalance of capabilities between OpenGL on other platforms and the one on the Mac. Either they only support the lowest common denominator of features supported by all platforms, they support fewer features in their Mac OS GL Engine, or they take the much easier approach and not support Mac OS at all. That way they can go all the way up to 4.x with no problem (or just use DirectX). This is all future thinking mind you, but I think it's very valid.

Most games don't use custom engines, but buy them from Crytek / id Software / Unreal Technologies / Unity. Let those companies announce engines based on OGL 4, and then let Apple divert resources to this, shall we?

Apple should use their resources on features actually USED by developers and end-users. Not some stuff that may come in handy at some future point in time.

So Apple should never innovate..

Kinda like how they ****ed up SMB by using a newer version that no one else uses? Sure its annoying now, but when everything catches up Lion will be ready.

Doesnt help me now like :(

Yes. Heaven forbid Apple use some of its 60+ Billion in cash reserves to hire a few engineers and build in support for an open source product that will come in handy in the future. I guess the last thing we would want is for OSX to have drivers for OpenGL 4.x.

Reptiles evolved into chickens.
Reptiles were laying eggs before chickens evolved.
The egg predates the chicken.

Exactly.

Also, this answer underlined the fundamental problem with the question itself; "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" should be changed to "what came first, the chicken or the chicken egg?" However, the downside is that the new question lacks the enigmatic tone of the original. Anyhow, it seems to be a lose-lose situation. ;)

A bit off point, but the lack of "Mac" bothers me. Am I the only one who notices the lack of "Mac" next to OSX pretty much everywhere in Lion? The App Store doesn't even have the "Mac" next to Lion on the Lion purchase page, and the only places you can find "Mac" in Lion itself is in the About My Mac dialog, and in the Lion Recovery ("Mac OSX Utilities").

Does it seem like Apple is phasing out "Mac"?

I think the egg came first…reptiles, fish…

Unless those are chickens too. They probably evolved from them, yes, but they are not chickens I don't think, so I guess the egg came first. :D

I'm told reptiles taste like chicken.:D

In fact, snake, frog legs, and just about everything else that that slithers, crawls, or hops is supposed to taste like chicken.

Coincidence...I don't think so!

(OMG - where is this insanity going...:p)

EDIT: This is so far off topic, it's not even on the same planet. Got caught up in my own stupidity. Apologies to all...

Generally speaking yes.

I hope they fix SMB. Connecting to our school server freezes Lion for at least a minute.

If you are running 11D24 (a couple of builds previous to this) does the final public release of 10.7.3 appear in software update on that developer build or will I have to manually get the update from Apple.com?

Thanks :)

Apple doesnt care about giving its consumer proper graphics support. It never has.

Pray tell at what point has OpenGL been an 'open source product' - it is an open standard and there are various implementations with Mesa being one open source implementation along with various hardware vendors offering their own OpenGL implementations.

To be totally frank it means nothing until developers move their code to OpenGL 3.2 given that the leap from OpenGL 3.2 to OpenGL 4.x is a lot smaller in terms of changes required. OpenGL 3.2 was a totally bottom up re-write of the OpenGL stack that takes into account the future direction of OpenGL - something that cannot be simply merged into the operating system via a combo update given how many critical parts of the OS rely on the OpenGL stack.

Apple doesnt care about giving its consumer proper graphics support. It never has.

Based on what evidence? the fact that when you snap your fingers they don't jump at your command?

What kind of server do they have installed? have you requested them enable the AFP functionality on the server? on *NIX there is Netatalk and on Windows there is the AFP functionality offered as part of the overall package.

As noted at the transition from PowerPC to Intel - the heart of a Mac is OS X - it is the software that makes the difference, that enables the end user to interact with their computer and enables third party software vendors to bring to the table great software. Without a robust operating system that is developer and end user orientated it won't matter how sexy the hardware is because the whole experience will fail once the end user turns the computer on.

I find things like 'Mac' everywhere redundant without a purpose. It is good that Apple doesn't allow heaps of brands to be plastered everywhere. 'Branding everywhere' doesn't do anything, not even the brand. If you rely on your brand name as the only point of differentiation, you've already lost imo.

Correct, because relying on something like i in front of everything to show differentiation would mean they have already lost.

After testing the previous beta, I was still experiencing wifi issues on my iMac. I'm hoping this update resolves the matter.

Interestingly, my 2010 6-Core Westmere Mac Pro 5,1 has slower WiFi on Lion compared to Snow Leopard. Even this build hasn't rectified the issue, and it's across all browsers (this is a clean install from a USB installation of the InstallESD.dmg from Lion). My iPhone 4S gets better speeds than my Mac Pro. That ain't right Shirley...

Did you report it to Apple?

It's been reported and is a recognized issue by Apple. In fact, many things have been reported by us and are "recognized" but have yet to be addressed/resolved.

One major complaint is with "Mission Control" in the "UI" category, as many have requested options for previous 10.5/6 "Exposé" and "Spaces". It's still one of a dozen bugs I have filed that are unresolved (thankfully the ApplePowerManagement kext's from one of the 10.7.3 beta's was corrected as the newer versions were causing serious speed issues across multiple hardware configurations/systems, and the fix at the time was restoring the 10.7.2 kexts).

The main issue to fix must be...

I can not boot Lion safely because in every 4 attemps only can boot succesfully one time.

Spin and spin with the apple logo and white background... but not finish.
I have done everything... fix permissions, reapply comboupdate etc... the same result...

Then I hope some day they can fix that. I am not the only user with that bug... Many people have the same problem.... please Apple.... :(

Too sad is still Lion need a lot of memory with Safari and two tabs and some small programs running i have 850 MB free from 4GB :(

Server2003. I'll ask about enabling any feature that makes it work better with macs but I'd assumed these were already in place. Worked fine before 10.7.2. Thanks though.

That sounds more like hardware issues.
