There's also a blank page in the Welcome to Snow Leopard PDF. Just goes from 10 to 12 with 11 completely blank. Really do not think this is the gold master with those little quirks still there.

Why is 64 bit not default on my early 2008 mbp?

I held 4 and 6 to enable it...

does it really make that much of a difference for performance?

Are there people who can clarify some things for me?

1) From what I understand in the case of Mac OS X - the computer is put into Long Mode then the operating system is loaded - the operating system being 32bit. When one runs 64bit applications on top of 32bit Mac OS X - they still get all/many the benefits of 64bitness? Am I correct in assuming it is the mode one is in rather than the kernel itself?

2) According to this:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/24593.pdf

What caught my eye was: "Defaults can be overridden in most modes using an instruction prefix or system control bit." does that mean, therefore that the reason why a the operating system can address more than 4GB is through the use of a special function provided by Long Mode?

OpenCL won't even work on many INTEL Macs, so that's not a valid "Discontinue PowerPC Support" excuse for Apple to break from 25 years of Apple precedent of supporting Macs with operating system upgrades longer than 2-3 years.

I'm not sure of the percentages, but Leopard supported Macs back to July, 2001. That's 6-7 YEARS!

Snow Leopard's features will not even fully support Macs from a year or so ago and will not support any PowerPC Mac from just 2-3 years ago!

I really do believe there will be public outrage when people who paid $4000 for a G5 finally discover they can't upgrade anymore after just 3 years.

This is actually WORSE SUPPORT than MICROSOFT would give Windows users!

[6]+[4] Keys

Looks like the version which has been leeked on torrent sites is fake..

Check out the release notes (10.6_snow_leopard_client_10a432_seed_note.rtf):

I believe you're thinking that holding down the 6 & 4 keys at book to enable the 64-bit kernel is a joke, but it's truth. If you hold down [6]+[4] while pressing the power button at boot, it will enable the 64-bit kernel if your machine is capable.

Try it out.

Try holding 4 + 6... you'll boot into 46 bit mode.

Snow leopard is supposed to be more light weight than leopard, but I sure hope they dont slowly bloat it up with updates. I could swear that Leopard for me got slower with every 400mb+ sized update.

Were you this upset when OS X 10.0 first came out (And later that year 10.1)? It killed the 604e and prior support there. You could argue that OS 9 was still in working order there, but the last update for that was at the end of that same year. That was again, 3 years of support for those machines.

Not trying to pick a fight here, just wanted to see if you remembered that point. :)

Hey say this is the golden master... if you install this seeded version, will that mean you have the exact copy of what will be on the disk? So you wouldn't have compatibility issues and such because it isn't the same version as release? Meaning you could have the final version of SL installed a lot earlier?
Yes, golden master is the same thing as the RTM... It's the final build that will be copied and sold on retail shelves. So, yes, if you were to somehow get it today, you'd be using it ahead of the general release date.
so if this is the golden master release, i.e the one that gets copied and printed to DVDs and sold. dar dar dar.. Does this release have the highly anticipated, and rumoured, and even expected.. marble UI?

Not that im bothered if marble UI exists or not, but i can see it already, a whole buncha peoples are gonna be on here, 5 minutes past release time, complaining that apple "is a bunch o ball, cos their OS doesnt look nice"

So my question, again, is Marble UI included on this? lol.. :)

:apple:
No, there is no such thing as a "marble" UI. Snow Leopard has a few minor revisions to the overall Aqua interface, but nothing major.

will 6+ 9 enter into 69 bit? :p:p:p:cool:

HAHA we found the next cast of funny people :p

lol anyways guys.
I just want to know if this build comes out to public... do you think it's STABLE enough to replace my whole HDD... cause I'm still dual booting between SL and Leopard...

Leopard primary
but i use SL more, i only use Leopard for editing and making videos.

Do you think i'll have no problems using this version??

what's the difference so far from 421a to this version??

sorry about the question i just want to make sure.

also is this the final build? GM or whatever? :p

Out by or before Labor Day
Buy or before Labor Day

SL will be the final thrust and twist of the knife in MS's back...
No, it won't. I don't know why people continue to think that Apple will gain the market share Microsoft has anytime soon. People who honestly believe that Apple will somehow "take over" from Microsoft within the next decade don't understand just how large and powerful the enterprise market (which Microsoft owns) is...

- Ya, so high quality that Microsoft still hasn't figured out how to create a filesystem that has very low fragmentation that doesn't require any external application to fix.
- So high quality that Microsoft still doesn't fully follow web standards in its default browser.
- Still can't create an OS that doesn't require multiple reboots for installation.
- If by high quality interfaces you really mean cluttered to crap interfaces, then I totally agree.
- Still haven't created a decent, secure shell scripting language preinstalled with every OS.
- So high quality they a have to sell 8 different versions all crippled in their own fantastic ways!
- You really want to compare the registry vs defaults ?! Can't believe MS hasn't just ripped Apple off on this one. Same thing with Linux, defaults is just bad ass hands down.
- How much do they still charge for development tools ?
- Performance of SMB is still down right awful.
- Apparently posting opinions and half-truths now qualifies as a fact.

Sorry, but both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 are solid, quality operating systems. You don't have to like Windows, but to say that it's crap is childish, immature and just plain wrong.

For some people, Windows works better. For others, Mac OS X works better. I don't know why some people here just can't accept this. Even Steve Jobs seems to understand this concept.

I agree!

I have nothing against OS X, it just doesn't serve my needs/style as well as Windows does.

Can someone PLEASE explain to me this 64-bit kernel thing?

I have a Mac Pro 1,1, and I don't know what a kernel is or what that means.

I have 64-bit Windows 7 beta running on my Mac Pro just fine, so why can't Snow Leopard run in 64-bit? Will Apple handle this? Does that mean that 64-bit software won't take advantage of my 64-bit processors?

Then what will Snow Leopard even add to my Mac Pro? I know my questions are all over the place, but I really don't understand this 32-bit kernel but 64-bit OS thing. If someone can explain it in layman terms, that'd be awesome :D

Lets say you had a stomach only big enough to fit a 6" Sub from subway, with a mouth that could eat 1" of it per minute. This is like 32-bit. Then you got a brain upgrade which could take advantage of your digestive system's advanced performance features. All of a sudden, you can eat foot-longs, at a rate of 5"s a minute!!! That my friend is 64-bit.

Technical Translation:

In a 64-bit Operating system, the memory technologies used can dramatically increase the addressable memory. It can also process strings 64-bits long instead of 32-bits long per cycle. (There may be more but I dont care)

All of it being made by you voicing on matters you know nothing about.

Snow Leopard is 32/64bit - the 32bit version uses PAE which provides 36bit addressing.

The issue for those of us still in 32bit mode has to do with the fact that not all the drivers are 64bit - My MacBook has a 64bit processor (Santa Rosa) but due to Apple being too bloody lazy to create a 64bit X3100 driver, I am stuck in 32bit mode.

I swear I'm tempted to move to Windows 7 due to Apples pathetic support of computers that are less than a year old, 64bit capable but they decide to cripple the experience for their customers.

It may not be up to Apple to provide drivers for Intel sets. Intel may do them just like ATi do for their own cards. (Some article somewhere) 64-bit support for GMA cards in windows is pretty sucky too.

Can someone answer a quick question?

I have Leopard and all files backed up via Time Machine.

If I do a clean install of Snow Leopard, will I be able to access this backup through TM? Or will the differing OS's cause an issue?

Nah, just the files are backed up, you'll be fine.
