Or for Safari which has not worked on my mid-2014 MacBook Pro for over a year now! Still jams even with this latest beta update.

Sadly, though not a fan of Google I must admit their latest version of the Chrome browser ( a recent updated and welcome 64bit app) works flawlessly.

What do you mean by "jam"? I am pretty sure it's isolated problem because my Safari works like a charm. If you could explain how the "jam" occurred, I will try reproduce it on my machine and see if I would have the same problem. Otherwise I am confident to say that it's a local error.

After my MacBook wouldn't boot (due to TRIM being enabled) I think I'm gonna run with it turned off. I can't run the risk of this happening again. Luckily this time I have a time machine backup, but I may not be so lucky next time.

You only have to turn it off before updates. TRIM enabler essentially adds a kernel extension, Yosemite however by default doesn't load kernel extensions that aren't signed (by Apple) as a security feature. So to get TRIM enabler to work, you have to disable that security feature, however, every OS update can easily turn it back on and then your computer want boot because it stumbles over that unsigned kernel extension.

Historically, Apple OS update follows the pattern of: new features - improvement - new looks - improvements - so on. The next one falls into category improvement. On the other hand you won't see many new features or drastically new UI design. But expect lots of improvements and stability across the OS.
This supposed pattern is based mostly on one single OS release, Snow Leopard, which was officially announced as no new features, only improvements. Some people might argue that Mountain Lion was a similar release (though I think this is based largely on its name only, though it refined and improved several of the major new features of Lion).

But that whole theory breaks down with Mavericks and Yosemite, as the latter would have to have an improvement release, which there is a big consensus it was not (Mavericks was much more of an improvement release with its major new features being an aggressive power consumption optimisation).

I think it is better to say that some releases focus more on new features and some more on improvements but those do not necessarily take direct turns.

I think its safe to assume the next iteration will be like snow leopard. leopard was so bad they had no choice but focus on improvements. Yosemite is the new leopard

Yes, there is a wifi issue

Is there actually a wifi issue to fix? Not on any of my idevices or Mac connected to an Apple wifi router...

I had this issue and no update seemed to solve it. Tired of this, last month I went to an Apple store and bought an AirPort express. Problem Solved.

So, it seems you have not experienced the issue because you are already on an AirPort.

I have searched for an answer, but came up short -

will the 10.10.3 release install over the 10.10.x beta? Or 10.10.4 for that matter (at some point in the future?)

Yes, I have read the disclaimer about reinstalling and for use on a non-production machine - I would rather not reinstall however!

Thanks and appreciate the input.

I don't think Apple guarantees full releases will install over seeds, but they always do. I guess theoretically something could go so wrong with a seed that you'd have to start over…

But it's probably unlikely, and you have a backup, right?

I have had WiFi problems with Apple Airport Extreme 5th Gen but not 6th Gen.
Always disconnects when my MBP goes into any power saving mode. I usually have to turn WiFi off and on again to reconnect. PITA!

Where do you find the Yosemite recovery update? Is it part of the beta release or a separate download?

I have a 5th generation Airport Extreme base station and have not had a single WiFi issue using it with Yosemite on any of the Mac computers or iDevices.

Is anyone else noticing that Photos absolutely obliterates your upload bandwidth when uploading to icloud - to the point where even loading a website somewhere else on your network is an exercise in frustration?

Yup. Completely unable to use my internet connection at all when Photos is uploading. They need to implement some intelligent throttling, because I am forever pausing it for a day and forgetting to put it back on when I go to bed.

Just setup QOS on your router. Dont blame photos for using upload bandwitdh, it supposed to use it, when you upload something to the web.

Oh how I hope this fixes the WiFi issues. My rMBP will rarely connect to the wireless network unless I run Windows 8 (Yes, Windows 8!) on bootcamp. It's terrible.

Or one for Mail.app? So tired of it expanding in memory footprint, or pinwheeling for 20 minutes when I log in after auto-lock.

Woah woah woah woah WOAH. That's just crazy talk. Fixing those emoji flags is WAY higher priority than fixing, y'know, bugs.

Regaining internet after reconnecting to wifi from closed mac is still MUCH slower for me now since the last beta and this one. Previously, I had no issues at all on my MBP Mid-2010.

I've got the MacBook Pro early 2015 model - noticed that the 5Ghz signal isn't as good as it should be. I'm avoiding using 2.4Ghz given that where I live is a proverbial swamp of 2.4Ghz signal but I guess the alternative is that I invest in powerline networking for my office but it shouldn't be a problem given that when I had my old MacBook Pro (the previous model) I didn't have that problem. I'd go with the Airport Extreme Base Station but unfortunately it doesn't support vlan tagging which is what the fibre connection I have requires.

To be honest at this stage the garbage collectors for the well known SSD vendors are pretty good these days which mean that TRIM isn't as needed as much as it was in the earlier years. OWC make a good range of SSD's which don't need TRIM enabled and it will be interesting to see what happens once Intel starts producing 3D VNAND when compared to what Samsung is offering with their own SSD line up.

is it just me, or do newer OS's have a much longer time in beta compared to the past few years ?

Probably just wanna makes sure Apple gets it right

I gave up on public beta, unless i was actually using the OS on a primary system or had upgraded too...

Testing in VM doesn't count, unless they have made changes in mail to strip out the initials that bugs me.... May look good and quick access to contacts from Mail and reminds you who sent message(s) to those in your contact list, but to me it's useless being there...

If Apple had a way to disable these icons initials in mail, then maybe would upgrade.

Is enabling TRIM really still recommended anyway? I've heard various arguments for and against. My Samsung is currently disabled for TRIM.

Note that this is an older Samsung 840 (not "EVO"), so your experiences might be different. But I have experienced a similar speed degradation (noticeable in real life) with my previous Samsung SSD (SATA-1, don't remember the model). TRIM fixed it.

Nicely pointed out!
