Why though? Why kill it?
The device is still making Apple Money. In fact at this point, they have got to be dirt cheap to produce, and the R&D is long since paid off. So Apple is probably making more on those devices than they are on iPod Touch's. It's not as if it overlaps with over products. It's a unique device that Apple is still selling.

I'm really puzzled why everything thinks Apple will kill it

Because its a old technology. The scroll wheel while we all know and love it and it was a big move forward, theres a better technology, there's wifi connectivity. Theres stores, theres apps, theres a lot that the iPod just cannot do without a huge revamp, and that revamp is already here, its called the iPod Touch. Apple is notorious for wanting to throw away old technology and create new standards, this would one one of their moves. The last 10 years the iPod has certinatly stood out for our generation as a symbol of our lives, some say thats a bit much, but I think that familure white box with the scroll wheel is forever engrained in our minds, its music, its connectivity and freedom.

Now why, in the beginning of the new decade would I want to be slowed down? I can't just hop on itunes like on my touch or iphone and download something, I gotta go to my mac, I gotta get on itunes, download it, connect my iPod, transfer then go. The iPhone has its own symbology, its represents the newest technology, and connectivity between people, its a actual PERSONAL computer. We live our lives around it, we get entertained by it, soothed by it, iPhone 4 I could tell a dying relative goodbye face to face. I share more of Woz's idea of technology and the good it could do for us and how much technology is a part of our nature as honey is to a bee. Its just a different kind of nature.

Okay, way off course there, lol.

iPod has had a great run, and now the younger generation must take its place, like the Macheads before me, and those after me.

No Ipod Classic refresh?

Ive always been a bit confused as to why you would have 160GB of storage in an iPod unless it was great at video. I would like to have more than 32GB in my iPhone because I like to watch shows on the train to work and back because the screen is good for it. The classic just cant do that comfortably. I dont have 32GB music (more like 8/9 GB so 160 is just OTT. Roll on the updated iPhone 4 with extra memory.

With regards to Mac sales I just bought a Dual AMD Mangy Core based workstation as I couldnt wait for the MacPro update - and it was going to be my first

Dual socket - single CPU so far btw...

If it makes you happy, then yes, Apple used to be cool. Then all sorts of fat old man started having their used Mac portables on the train and in cafes; all sorts of dumb kids started showing off their iPhones and all sorts of boring people thought that they entered a club or a family just because they bought a computer and an iPhone.

I hate mac fans like you. God forbid the computer become popular and, well, then developers get interested and make software for it. A computer is nothing if no one is making any programs for it.

I'm glad Mac has gotten popular. You see a lot more stuff that takes the time to be usable on a mac as well.

Besides, talk about your snobby, nose in the air, gives everyone who likes a mac a bad name (I mean to the point that it turns people off of macs cause they don't like the fans and I have to make sure they know I'm not one of them) attitude. Oh my... you're not cool anymore cause of your computer cause now the masses like it. Got news for you, you were never cool cause of your computer. People who were looking at you were probably laughing at you. You just apparently weren't paying attention (I know that I found I was more laughed at for having a mac then thought cool).

Its prolly time the original iPod was put to rest and allow the iPod Touch claim its place as the new iPod, who wants just a iPod anymore?

People who already have an iPhone and who want a *large* amount of music storage. A 64GB touch costs $150 more than the classic and has about 1/3 the storage. You do get a lot of extra features with the touch, of course - but if you already have an iPhone, there's no point in having duplicate functionality.

There's no predicting what Apple will do, of course, but for many people there is no good replacement for the classic.

Well, I just bought a 15" MBP i5 this week...after an iPhone 4 last week. It looks like I have some overtime in my near future. I don't see an iPad in my future anytime soon, but I think my mom should get one. It's all she would need.

so except for the few OCD people that must carry around a 160GB iPod around, there is no point in doing so for the vast majority of people.

You ≠ everyone. Just because you don't use your iPod anymore doesn't mean that everyone no longer uses them. I have a large library and love having it all with me in my car. It's not OCD, it's convenient. I mean how could they honestly be losing over the iPod? I love SSD as much as the next guy, but it's still too expensive.

re attached pix............ EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! come to sunny south africa and work some kilos off!

How dumb does one have to be NOT to realise that those pictures were not mine. They only show a few ugly Apple fans.

So to your invitation - come to Europe, go to a school and get some help with your intelligence issue!
