I don't get it...
I don't see google trying to get the earth.com domain without paying (cause that's what apple's doing. Someone registered the domain before them and now they want it for free).

Also, apple doesn't even own the iphone3gs.com or iphone3g.com domain, why do they care so much about the new iphones?

"Earth" is not a registered trademark of Google.

I wonder how many speculators have already snapped up iPhone5s, iPhone6,iPhone7 etc etc.

Curious that you say this because when I was reading this article on the main page I told my buddy (in jest) that we should go in 50/50 on an "iphone8.com" domain so we can make some decent money in a couple of years. :p

Won't it be 6 anyways if they don't do 4g or just call it iPhone like the iPad? ...

... iPhone5 just seems wrong

If they were going to skip 5, there would be little interest in this domain name. I think this is news because it suggests there is likely to be a phone named the iPhone 5 from apple, which interesting given the move to just 'iPad'.

I think they'll need to avoid iPhone 4G unless it will be a world phone (LTE iPad only in USA anyone?). Given previous trends to give a redesign with every new number as well, I would be surprised to not see a new form factor with the iPhone 5. If Apple plans to deliver something amazing this year (which imho opinion, it needs to, to remain the dominant phone manufacturer), this year could be extremely exciting.

Let's hope they deliver with iOS6 and the (assumed) new iPhone!

I don't understand why they feel it's so important to have control of these domains. Clearly, with iPhone4S it was important to control it, but in general...
If I want information on the iPhone, I go to apple.com. Almost everybody knows it's made by Apple, and if they don't they go to Google and type in iPhone.
Just seems a little bit unnecessary to control them, when they probably get something like 1 millionth of their traffic to the iPhone page coming via that route.

Because Control is everything in todays market. Much different than pre-2008.The more an entity owns, and or controls the less the "Risk". The less the risk the higher the Market Cap grows. Look at how AAPL consistently forecasts out VERY conservatively. The market knows this, and that AAPL controls much of the inventory/production used for the numbers.

AAPL's Control over it's market makes it a Low Risk, High Return Co.

Will it be like this in 2016? I think so, but it depends on control.

Obviously one needs risk to innovate. That is the true struggle. :apple:

I think Apple should immediately be given all domains that have anything to do with their products. It is only fair. How dare a mere mortal offend Apple.

My personal feature requests from the new iPhone...and I appreciate some of these are software/OS developments, but bear with me:

1. Bigger screen...I hope at least an inch diagonal larger.
2. Switch to super amoled plus (or some such non-pentile oled) display, so we can actually read outside.
3. More durable (the glass on both sides is just far too fragile).
4. LTE
5. HDMI out, or ability to get a cheap dongle to do this, also standard VGA, DVI, and composite cable capable would be nice.
6. Stereo speakers on the phone.
7. Longer battery life, a couple days without a charge should be here by now!
8. USB 3.0 support for syncing.
9. Printing support that actually supports more than a handful of licensed printers.
10. Incorporation of a stylus for jotting notes.
11. Support for wifi streaming to platforms like xbox, roku, etc.
12. Ability to block calls (you have to jailbreak for this today)
13. Fix buggy wifi syncing.
14. Led to blink for missed calls
15. VOIP calling.
16. Built in IR port for universal remote.
17. Laser pointer.
18. Pico projector.
19. Optical character recognition for snapped docs.
20. Access to the file system.
21. NFC.

Obviously, few of these will be considered...but almost all could be (battery tech simply isn't here yet)

And to the extent other phone makers do incorporate these features will make their products all the more compelling.

This isn't really related to the article exactly, but what the hell, I'll bite.

1. I hope so too, regarding it being a diagonal increase as well. But no more than an inch.
2. No opinion.
3. Would be good, but not a requirement.
4. Sure, if it works in more than just USA (hint hint, Australia)
5. And let Apple miss out on selling you an Apple TV, are you insane? A thinner, thunderbolt capable Apple dock connector however would be sweet.
6. I was under the impression to two holes on the bottom of my phone work as stereo? If I'm mistaken, then sure, this could be good.
7. A given.
8. No. Thunderbolt, USB 2.0 + wifi sync would be more than adequate.
9. Yes, if I can get this working through a cydia hack, there is no reason for Apple to not implement this, and I have no clue why they haven't fixed this gross error on their behalf. If I could print from any Apple mobile device, I would need computers less and less.
10. Not for a phone, even a phone with a 4"+ screen.
11. Yes, but will never happen. I'm looking forward to a cydia tweak to get AirPlay Mirroring to work to devices outside of the Apple eco-system.
12. Yes.
13. Never tried it, but I assumed it would be buggy currently, so that's why I never tried. But yes, wifi sync working well would be good, and working with a NAS device (with an iTunes server).
14. It doesn't do this with accessibility settings turned on?
15. Yes - or native support for something like Skype. I wish Apple purchased Skype.. :(
16. I'd like this, but again, see point 5.
17. No. If you are controlling a keynote from your mobile device, you can use a software based laser pointer/pen. After that, it's just a gimmic.
18. Now you're just trolling right?
19. Many apps do this. That's the whole idea behind the app store.
20. No, assuming you are thinking of something like finder with users and folders and all that old stuff - I don't want to have to think about where I put my files.
21. Damn straight. I also want to see a move to complete digital wallets (including medical cards, drivers licenses, access to money, loyalty cards and every other thing you put in a normal wallet). Apple would be the company to make this reality begin to happen. Perhaps iOS6 will bring this...

Well, you can't make a claim based on unreleased and secret products, but luckily the fifth iPhone has been out for a while already. Considering it took them a year to grab iPhone4, this is early.

This is SOP on the internet these days. Until one of these companies matches Kraft's moronic trademark attack on a comedy/punk band in the early 90s, I give this a big:

meh

Fortunately Apple decides! :) However, you have a future with Samsung.

What the hell does this have to do with the story you're commenting on?

I reckon this is irrelevant but the feature request posted as a comment on this thread is somewhat over the top.

2. Switch to super amoled plus (or some such non-pentile oled) display, so we can actually read outside.
NO. I've heard a plethora of people complaining about burn-ins on their AMOLED displays.
9. Printing support that actually supports more than a handful of licensed printers.
AirPrint Activator
10. Incorporation of a stylus for jotting notes.
... Or buy one yourself. Styluses are so 2006.
17. Laser pointer.
Guess how many kids would use their iPhones to pull pranks and eventually burn someone's eyes if they incorporated this.

Google doesn't own the "earth" trademark so it's not a case WIPO would consider. Someone registered they domain, yes... to make money off Apple's trademark -- probably in hopes of selling it back to Apple, i.e., a squatter. It's why ICANN put the trademark ownership rules in place. If you don't like them complain to them. Apple is following the WIPO/ICANN process.

So you don't like this article. Is your opinion really a post? and who cares anyway.

Of course my opinion is a post - I hit the "post" button. And who cares? Well, apparently you since you took the time to respond to it.

But since you can't read between the lines I was implying that the MR staff was cluttering up the main news section with something was about as useful as "water is wet." Gatekeeping is an important step in the editing process. At best this was "page two" story. As a MR reader I wanted to express this to the editing staff. They can care or not, just as you did.

How come they haven't done this with the iPad domain names?
I went to iPad.com, I get to an empty website saying Coming Soon with a picture of a city. I got to iPad3.com, it doesn't exist.

I go to iPad2.com, it directs me to MacRumors.com lol

I find it interesting that the claimant is listed as "Apple Computer, Inc."
Apple dropped the 'computer' from its nomenclature in 2007.

Not sure if that forum is going to be enough to constitute fair use of that domain; since .com is supposed to be a company oriented top-level domain and Apple actually has a product with the name.

I think it's essentially domain-name squatting, and I wouldn't be surprised if the forum was set up as a poor effort to claim otherwise.

Working in IT I can tell you people aren't smart enough to go to Apple.com to look at the iPhone, they'll type in things like iPhone.com (or in this case, possibly iPhone5.com).

Way to ghetto-fi the iPhone. Half of what you listed are tacky and not very elegant … which goes against the function and form minimalism.

What you want is an Android phone.
