Apple's behavior in this regard makes no logical sense to me. You would think any company with a modicum of forethought would obtain the domains for all possible product names several years in advance.

For example, Apple really should have obtained the domain names for "iPhone1.com" thru "iPhone20.com" plus the "s" monikers as well, over 5 years ago.

This does not mean that they will release a product with any specific name, it just provides coverage for most of the likely possibilities. Parking domain names is cheap, especially for a multi-billion dollar company. Common sense, amazing isn't it?

Perhaps this shows the "bully / arrogance" mentality Apple these days.

Your bully does not have to worry about making sure his favourite seat in the bar is occupied or now, or if there is any sun lounger free for him to use around the pool.
He just walks where he wants, and due to his size (and bodyguards) just pushes those aside as he goes, and get what he wants there and then.

Why bother protecting things in advance, as your size and power means you can just force your way thru them the time comes to it.

This does not necessarily mean they will be calling it iPhone 5. They might be acquiring it to 1) confuse others, or 2) help people who won't adapt to the name "the new iPhone".

As the article said, the site was linking to porn site(s). No reputable company wants its name associated with sleaze seeking to entice people to other sites.

It's called protecting your intellectual property. Just because YOU go to Apple.com for iPhone info doesn't mean everyone else does. They're not controlling the domain name because they feel like they'll get a lot of traffic, it's all about protecting your IP and keeping it in your own hands, rather than some random person who could do something like with what happened with iphone4S.com

I already acknowledged the iPhone4S incident, but how often have you thought, "I'll just look at the specs of Adobe Flash - I wonder how I'll find it...rather than take the route that I know will get me there (adobe.com), I wonder if adobe have the domain flash.com? I'lll try it".
Excuse the sarcasm :)

----------

because they hold a trademark on iPhone and they are the only ones that can use it. That is so long as they defend that right. Given that this is a site about Apple's product there's no way the owners can claim their use of the term iPhone is about anything else. So legally Apple needs to make this attempt

Ah, I didn't realise it was a legal requirement. Stupid law then.

----------

Working in IT I can tell you people aren't smart enough to go to Apple.com to look at the iPhone, they'll type in things like iPhone.com (or in this case, possibly iPhone5.com).

People that stupid shouldn't be dirtying the Apply name.

My personal feature requests from the new iPhone...and I appreciate some of these are software/OS developments, but bear with me:

1. Bigger screen...I hope at least an inch diagonal larger.
2. Switch to super amoled plus (or some such non-pentile oled) display, so we can actually read outside.
3. More durable (the glass on both sides is just far too fragile).
4. LTE
5. HDMI out, or ability to get a cheap dongle to do this, also standard VGA, DVI, and composite cable capable would be nice.
6. Stereo speakers on the phone.
7. Longer battery life, a couple days without a charge should be here by now!
8. USB 3.0 support for syncing.
9. Printing support that actually supports more than a handful of licensed printers.
10. Incorporation of a stylus for jotting notes.
11. Support for wifi streaming to platforms like xbox, roku, etc.
12. Ability to block calls (you have to jailbreak for this today)
13. Fix buggy wifi syncing.
14. Led to blink for missed calls
15. VOIP calling.
16. Built in IR port for universal remote.
17. Laser pointer.
18. Pico projector.
19. Optical character recognition for snapped docs.
20. Access to the file system.
21. NFC.

Most of this has been covered already but:
1. If it's too big to use with one hand, then no.
2. No. Just no. The retina display is gorgeous and easy to read.
3. I'm all for that.
4. A given. The lower power chips will come.
5. You can already do this. You just want cheaper dongles?
6. Why? It's a phone - you aren't getting separation from a tiny device like a phone. It won't make anything sound better. Don't fool yourself - "stereo" is not better than "mono" in sound quality just because it's stereo.
7. Of course.
8. Not if it takes up more space or makes it cost more. We have Wi-Fi sync now.
9. What is Apple to do? The printer vendors have to add support. And there are gateway utilities to do it from your Mac or PC.
10. No. No incorporation. Provide a pressure sensitive API for third parties to sell a stylus - sure. But not one built in. It's a niche feature.
11. doubtful. Apple sells an AppleTV box for that purpose. Aren't there third party apps that can do that for you anyway?
12. could be nice.
13. Yes.
14. meh - if I take my phone out of my pocket - I'm going to look at the screen anyway.
15. Something wrong with Skype?
16. There are third party solutions to this already.
17. Now you're just getting silly.
18. Didn't you want more battery life in point 7?
19. Isn't there a third party app that does this too?
20. No! No! No! It's not a PC. The iPhone is easy to use and popular because it is not complex like a PC. Access to the file system = lost documents, app errors, etc.
21. I'm guessing it's coming.

I'm in favor of calling it the iPhone 5 then doing 5S and 6 and so on. I would consider the 4S version "4.5" because it was only evolutionary.

If Apple did it by gen number, you realize that they'd only have even-numbered models, right? Wouldn't that look weird?

There's a point when logic gets thrown in the window in marketing and aesthetics. Thankfully it's not by gen number but by whatever "sounds right." It's an emotional thing, not a rational one and it'll either be iPhone 5 or just "the new iPhone".

read up a little bit better. iphone5.com doesnt host porn, its a forum site discussing iphone 5 rumors. while im all for apple protecting their ip through legal routes, this is the wrong move against the iphone5.com site. unlike some previous iphone#.com sits that hosted porn, this one should be protected under fair use because: a. its providing commentary and education on a subject and b. its not profiting off the iphone or apple name in anyway thats detrimental to apple. if anything, it helps apples brand. so begore you go attacking a website that has a legimitate right to a domain, read and know what youre talking about.

Obviously, few of these will be considered...but almost all could be (battery tech simply isn't here yet)

And to the extent other phone makers do incorporate these features will make their products all the more compelling.

I think what you need is the swiss army phone, not the iphone.

Might want to do some reading yourself. Fair use covers copyright infringement, not trademarks, which I believe what Apples "iPhone" is about. Copyright covers content, like if someone used a video made by Apple of the new iPhone 5. Use of that video in another video as a news report might be covered under "Fair use"

actually fair use would be correct becase the website is content with the use of the trademark in an educational/commentary setting. its like using the trademark of harry potter on a website that discusses harry potter. however, the reason the website can also use iphone5 is that apple has no product named iphone5, and they are not using the term at all. im sure they will get it overturned, because they have the money to do so, but iphone5.com was fair game when it was bought and continues to be.

Thats not how fair use works. While what the content of the website contains might apply to fair use, fair use does not apply to trademarked names, symbols & brand names. While iPhone5 may not be trademarked itself, the "iPhone" brand name is still included in the website name which might go against trademark law. Now if it was "5.com" which featured news of a possible upcoming iPhone, Apple probably would not be going after the website.

i still disagree, by your defination of how it works, using harry potter again, mugglenet.com couldnt exist because rowling trademarked the word muggle. but because of the context of which it is being used (as education/commentary), its fair use. Because they have both a disclaimer on their website and are not in the same business as apple, it would consititute fair use.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use_(US_trademark_law)#_

"A nonowner may also use a trademark nominatively—to refer to the actual trademarked product or its source. In addition to protecting product criticism and analysis, United States law actually encourages nominative usage by competitors in the form of comparative advertising."

because apple has no such product as iphone 5, nor have they trademarked as such, this would amount to fair use.

If the domain holder is smart, he will settle for a small fee between $100K and $10K to move the domain over to Apple and show them it is cheaper than court fees.

Ok, I guess there is such a thing as fair use with Trademarks, But...The courts still may consider the possibility of confusion in analyzing whether a use is fair or not.

Its within the realm of possibility people will confuse iPhone5.com with Apples making an additional website relating with their forthcoming product.

The use of Macrumor.com would not confuse the general public within reason its not necessarily a website made by Apple themselves, but could be other various things related to that gene.

Yes...in the same way I love how iPhones already combine calendars, email client, full web browser, video camera, camera, video phone, voice, music player and storage, instant messaging, GPS tech, gyroscopes for orientation, compass....I mean how is NOT a swiss army knife already? That's what makes it so great.

but the way fair use works is over the use of "a reasonable person.' i doubt a reasonable person would get the iphone5.com commentary site confused with a product that may or may not even exist. while they may relate the two, on seeing the site is for rumors relating to a possible iphone 5, they wouldnt confuse the two.

that said, even know i dont think its right, apple will get the domain name under their control, and wont do anything with it anyway. besides, everyone knows its going to be called "the new iphone" anyway...haha.

ditto.

"The Eleventh Circuit announced that the proper good faith standard "asks whether the alleged infringer intended to trade on the good will of the trademark owner by creating confusion as to the source of the goods or services"

Some even denotes the trademark must be used descriptively use only in describing a good or service.

iPhone5forums.com would be describing what type of forums, where iPhone5.com might confuse the user of the actual product intended.

I believed the user did try to confuse the general public in attempt to get people to try to visit the website.

I don't get it...
I don't see google trying to get the earth.com domain without paying (cause that's what apple's doing. Someone registered the domain before them and now they want it for free).

Also, apple doesn't even own the iphone3gs.com or iphone3g.com domain, why do they care so much about the new iphones?

because only god can do that, google doesn't own the earth :D

Not at all bothered by a bigger screen, the S2 screen is ridiculous, I have a tablet for a big screen. If they make it 4 inches longer with same width and thus 16:9 ill accept, otherwise very happy with current screen. Updating all the apps for a different screen size again would be ridiculous too.

I'd like to see things more easily on my phone, which I take with me. Don't give me this nonsense about the poor developers, the ecosystem and multiple resolutions being the sign of the end times or something. They'll have new resolutions and sizes soon enough and no Mayan apocalypse will happen.

No.

Why? You're happy about not being able to see anything on your phone out in the daylight? Super amoled displays are far brighter and easier to read outside. While I too appreciate the current IPS LCD display, it has major disadvantages. Now that amoled's are getting dpi up, I don't see why you'd stick with the tech that's less efficient and more limited. This will happen in the next generation or two and it will be a nice improvement.

Its the same glass on every other Smartphone out there. Steve was responsible for Corning bring the Gorilla Glass concept back from a 30 year slumber. (I had to laugh the other day when someone on Facebook broke their iPhone screen and someone replied "get a Galaxy S2 it has Gorilla Glass, best smartphone you can get" - every iPhone since the first has had the same glass. Although Corning have supposedly made to advances in making it stronger so maybe it will be a bit tougher this year...

Yes, but not every cell phone has it on both sides or has the glass edge exposed. They simply need to be more durable and the next one will be.

I can't even get a 3G signal in most places in the UK, even when LTE launches I expect to get it no where. I also do so little internet on 3G when I do have a signal its not really something that would affect my life what so ever. I know a lot of people do want it though and to be honest its pretty much a given - though as I said, I don't except to access LTE in the UK outside of London for at least another year.

What do you think this is a Nokia? Use Airplay! Never understand why people want to be plugging HDMI cables into their TV from their phone…

Because people stream movies and they would like have to have the easy ability to display what they can get on their phone. If others are to be believed this is already available, if so, great.

No thanks, kids make enough noise with phones as it is - and you'd never be able to hear a stereo spectrum coming from the base of a phone anyway. Put your bloody headphones on.

I don't carry headphones with me and I would like better sound.

Says you! You obviously know more than Apple engineers don't you. You want more power, bigger screen, LTE, stereo speakers - and a battery that last a couple of days because "it should be here by now" - you haven't got a clue.

Ok, don't get all flustered. I appreciate that multiple days on a charge isn't here yet, but it will be soon. What do you think....10 years max until all these mobile electronics are always on? So, I imagine it will be 3 to 5 until some have MUCH longer abilities than currently available. So, yes, I'd like it, I made it clear I didn't expect it could be done.

No, Apple don't support USB 3.0 on anything + automatic Wifi syncing overnight while you sleep is far more useful.

The fact that they don't support it is why I want them to. lol I don't much care what makes sense for Apple, I'm just saying what would be nice for me. I see all sorts of USB 3.0 support coming on new mobo's and think it would be great to have far faster transfers. Thunderbolt is great too, but even Intel (creators) are supporting USB 3.0.

Nothing wrong with printing support now - you can run an app on your Mac to make incompatible computers AirPrint compatible. Also what a stupid thing to ask for - just think about it for a minute as I can't even be bothered to explain.

Again, why be nasty? If it's so easy to explain why Apple has decided to make it more difficult than necessary to print over wifi, I think you should do it. One shouldn't be required to buy an unnecessary additional Apple router or licensed printer.

NO!

What are you streaming to your xbox from your phone son? You do realise Apple have their own eco-system, you can stream whatever you want to the Apple TV. Why would they suddenly change an entire business model to suit other suppliers?

Again, you're misunderstanding, I don't care that Apple has a business model, blah, blah, blah. I hope they make more money, but it has nothing to do with what would be convenient for me.

I'll give you this - although networks around the world should be responsible for this part, it should be blocked at network level. They can still call from a private/another number though so always thought it largely useless to block anyone who's mental enough to be hassling you anyway.

Works fine for me, unless iTunes mucks up - this is an iTunes issue not a new phone model.

It probably won't for long. As others have commented, it's really buggy. It worked for me for a while too.

I don't want an LED anywhere on my iPhone thanks.

It would cost them next to nothing, could be invisible when off, and you could have an easy on-off menu item for those, like you, who don't want it. Me, I take my phone out and set it down occasionally. It would be handy for me to know looking across the room if I have voicemail.

Have you downloaded Skype?

VOIP should be integrated natively. They don't do it, so I've read, due to carrier deals. Regardless, it would be nice to have the choice right from contacts or the dialer.

Really? So we can go around changing other peoples TV channels. I don't think I've been excited by a "universal remote" being built into something since those watches in the 80's…

Nearly everyone I know has an amp, blu ray, tv, cable box minimum...too many remotes and an iphone would provide a nice interface. Not worried about other people changing channels...you have to configure them first, who's going to bother?

What?

You must not give presentations or lecture. If you would, you'd appreciate your phone is always on you, why should you have to carry a laser pointer, PowerPoint clicker? Lasers are god awful cheap, and wouldn't have to be noticeable for those not needing them.

Ok now you're being ridiculous.

Why is it ridiculous? I was imagining a PowerPoint presentation.

This would be a software implementation not a hardware thing. Ive never looked as I don't scan documents had found OCR terrible in the past but id be surprised if there isn't an OCR app in the app store.

You can already do this with iPhone Explorer, without a jailbreak. There are also apps which let you navigate a finder style browser on the iPhone and drag and drop files (wirelessly) to the device which you can access on the move. Anything past this and you're back into Nokia territory not Apple world.

Thanks for the program suggestion. I'd still like to be able to use the file system from my phone. I can't believe you're arguing for less control of your own hardware and files. If you're just making the Apple "case" for the company, well I agree, they want to lock down everything. I'd rather they open it up.

Finally a sensible and useful suggestion.

Other than that, what a load of drivel. :D

Your post is kind of rude, unnecessarily so.

There's a point when logic gets thrown in the window in marketing and aesthetics. Thankfully it's not by gen number but by whatever "sounds right." It's an emotional thing, not a rational one and it'll either be iPhone 5 or just "the new iPhone".

I also don't think it's fair to consider the difference between the 3GS and 4 the same as 4 and 4S. The 4S should be considered "iPhone version 4.5", not "iPhone version 5".

Otherwise, we'd be on Mac OS 9000 by now.

Guys, let's DDOS iPhone5.com! :p

I'm not completely serious, but I'd like if someone did. And eby.com (eBay scam site). And Scientology (actually, it's been done before).

If the domain holder is smart, he will settle for a small fee between $100K and $10K to move the domain over to Apple and show them it is cheaper than court fees.

But the domain owner presumably wouldn't be able to afford a drawn out court battle anyway, so if apple really wanted to be mean they could just drag him through the system, without offering a settlement (obviously they will though if they can't get the domain by force :D )

Are other kids in your high school doing this?

I doubt anyone has (including me). Just saying, it wouldn't be bad if someone DDOS'd those scamming sites and piracy sites like thepireatebay.org.

But no, the only sites that get attacked are honest ones like Paypal.
