Yeah, that is easy enough to happen for a smaller company, but mistakes can cost money... now, in this instance, I doubt it caused any issue, but in the world of law I've seen some absolute horror stories. A business law professor I talked to talked about how someone almost lost a $750 million deal because of one comma. Apple is known for being insanely detail-oriented. I personally don't really care, but just something to think about.

PCIe 6.0 standard is no where near to adoption. This was no mistake, this was just hyping up and then saying whoopsy we made a small mistake. Right.
 
Does it even matter what PCIe generation it is when the NVMe controller is part of the SoC, so this PCIe connection is entirely between different parts of the chip?

The generation dictates the speed whereas the location of the controller doesn't seem to make any difference. The speeds of the SSD in an M5 Macbook (PCIe 4.0) are exactly the same as a PC with a Gen 4 SSD, and in a PC, the controller is on the SSD and not on the CPU (per se).

In the past generations of M-series SSD's, the speeds have typically lagged PC's.

The M5 chip made a generational leap for Apple and its SSD controller. It's considered to have PCIe 5 speeds, benching around 12GB/s. Pretty much doubling the M4 series speeds.

I have the M1 Max Studio from 2022 and it's a perfect 24/7 machine - how does it compare to the M5 Max ?

Not really. PCIe 5.0 is fast enough. We are getting to the point of Thunderbolt being so fast I'm not sure what everyone is going to do with it other than running higher resolution displays at higher refresh rates. Media equipment can certainly saturate a good portion of Thunderbolt 5, but I doubt anyone is really upset that the device does not have enough bandwidth.

The M5 Max SSD speed is around 14,000 MB/s read and 16,000 MB/s write. Over 20,000 MB/s if you buy it with a 8TB drive. The bigger the drive, the faster the speed.

All the M series 1 through 4 chips have had somewhat (comparatively) slow SSD speeds.

The M5 and its SSD controller brought forth a generational leap in SSD speeds not seen before in the M series.

Wow, and here I thought the RAM speeds were better - had no idea the SSD speeds were so much improved.

Thanks - glad I ordered the M5 to replace my M1.

Yea, those are definitively PCIe 5.0 x4 speeds. PCIe 6 x4 speeds are 32GB/s
