i don't know about how they treat prosumers (or what that means exactly).. i'm a professional.. designer/builder.
9.5hrs in cad & rendering today with 16GB ram.. 0MB swap used.. zero
what the heck are you doing with your computers? what software do you use? why do you need so much RAM? (as in- these are real questions)
Is this a serious question? Because if it is, are you being deliberately ignorant?
If not, then this is another classic example of the members on Macrumors, or Apple users in general being very arrogant.
'This is how I work, therefor it must apply to everyone'
I see this logic ALL THE TIME on Macrumors and it's getting borderline offensive, I'm sick of it.
So what if 16gb of ram is enough for you. Do you really think that there aren't greater demands for RAM outside of CAD? This is exactly the same as many members DENYING others the ability to have an OPTION of changing the green buttons behaviour in OS X so that it makes windows maximize instead of going full screen (
see here).
Since I'm seeing this logic ALL the time and I'm catching you red handed:
WHY do you assume that your work habits are to apply to everyone? What makes you think consumer demands end with YOU?
To answer your question as to what I'm doing on my computer that makes me exceed 16gb:
Running Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign on a daily basis with multiple documents open within each. My forte is graphic design but where I work also requires me to do web (Coda, Dreamweaver, Transmit, Chrome, Firefox & Safari), photography (Lightroom, Xee, Bridge) and video production (After Effects, VLC, Quicktime, Handbrake). At all times I have MS Outlook open and alternate between Vox and iTunes for music (prefer Vox as it uses less memory). Outside of those apps, I still often run MS Word & Excel. I work for a magazine being in charge of all the front end web development and social media, but since I'm most experience in graphic design and print, they have me creating print materials as well. I do this at home as well as a freelancer for extra cash on the side.
16gb? I can chew that up easily especially if I start any work in After Effects... and I don't even do heavy work in that. Thank god for my 32gb of RAM in my hackintosh build. Too bad that my work MacBook Pro doesn't support more than 16gb. I used to run on only 8gb and it drove me insane.
