Nice to see MagSafe back. I guess it's too much to hope for compatibility with the previous generation of MagSafe?

At least it's not fixed to the power brick, if it breaks just replace the cable.

The old magsafe you have to replace the whole brick. This new magsafe is much better
Agree...but i bet he finds something else to complain...i would understand if apple didnt let us charge with usbC still..but now, we have 2 choices ..and even now for some its an issue

MBP 14"
67W USB-C Power Adapter (included with M1 Pro with 8-core CPU)
96W USB-C Power Adapter (included with M1 Pro with 10-core CPU or M1 Max, configurable with M1 Pro with 8-core CPU)

MBP 16"
140W USB-C Power Adapter

That should be the same 96W USB-C main brick that the 2019 Intel 16" MacBook Pro's and some others used.

MacBook Air (M1, 2020)
MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020)
MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018 - 2019)
MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016 - 2019)
MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016 - 2019)
MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015 – 2017)

Yes! The return of a proprietary connector that easily wears out and breaks and falls out when you use it on your knee. FINALLY!

Edit: Yes i'm fully aware you can still charge with USB-C, I was being facetious. It's good the cable is still USB-C at the end and now braided. At least you can just replace the cable and use it with USB-C so it retains some flexibility and easy to repair/replace unlike the original.
I'm happy to see MagSafe return --- I keep fearing I'll break either end of the ucb-c ports on my 16" with the slightest vertical movement (which oftentimes causes interruption in charging) --- fast charging and replaceable cables makes this a win-win in my book.

100% agree an the only reason they brought it back. Part of their proprietary charger strategy. But hey, Macrumors comment section wants Magsafe back…

Does anyone know if power supplies with fewer Watts will still be able to drive a 16" M1 Max? For example, I have a thunderbolt dock that provides 90Watt. It was pretty neat to be able to plug in just one cable.

I've noticed the cables Apple has been making lately don't have the the strain reliefs on them anymore. The USB-C to USB-C cable for the iPads don't have them, the new fast charger for the Apple Watch don't have them, and now this one doesn't have them. Did they finally solve fraying problem, or are they going to become more fragile and fray again?

They don't say but it probably will have no problem running as normal on 90 watts, it just won't fast charge.

I'm aware - except they removed a Thunderport port for....HDMI 🤦‍♂️
Good. Though it's not exactly a removal since the only MBP with four was Intel-based before, right? Might have to do more with chip constraints than anything else.

Yeah, it's not a good charging cable. Don't forget the typical bugs where the light doesn't properly reflect whether it's charging. But I'm particularly lucky here because, upgrading from a 2014 MBP, my old chargers will still work with the laptop. It's like they built it just for me.

Magsafe is great, but I'll stick with USB-C. It's nice Apple gave us a choice, though. I'll probably pick up some aftermarket usbc->MagSafe 3 cables...or just get the inevitable MagSafe 2->3 converter. My house is full of 1->2 converters, so one more layer of adapters!

Well, I would expect that to work well just without any fast charge. Another issue is that when you max out workload, the laptop will still drain battery percentage even when plugged in since max load will be 100W+ I persume.

$49 for a new cable is cheaper than replacing your entire MagSafe 2 adapter when the cord started yellowing and fraying even though you treated it very gently...but not that much cheaper. Well, at least it still charges over USB-C. And maybe they've improved the cable durability. Maybe.
More nickel and dime-ing with accessories. This is the one part of the Apple customer experience that has always sucked.

$50 for just a damn cable. Only at Apple.

Also, I wish they just put in the 4th thunderbolt port instead of hdmi. It was more versatile anyway.
Not sure you speak for many people but I’m sure more than 90% of us would much rather a full hdmi port than that 4th thunderbolt. Soo much better than using adaptors

Like with the Magsafe 1 to Magsafe 2 transition, I wonder if they will come out with a Magsafe 2 to Magsface 3 adapter for those with a bunch of older power bricks lying around.

Apple will not. Someone could hack one together but it won't be reliable or all that useful since you can use the type-C ports for charging anyway.

Lucky you, most I used turned yellow, frayed and broke.

At least this time it's not a part of the entire charger so it's easily replaced.
Same here. My 2013 MBP's cable simply fell apart. But I'm still using it! All wrapped up in tape 😂
