Seems like a real marketing/sales blunder to finally bring back MagSafe and then call the 2 charger options on their store “USB-C Power Adaptor” with NO mention of MagSafe.. I get that the power brick itself is indeed USB-C (and I like that) but I was totally bewildered and combing over their store/ordering options looking for MagSafe.. They just spent 6yrs acclimating everyone to USB-C chargers and when I saw “USB-C Power Adaptor” I thought “no I want MagSafe, where’s the MagSafe charger option and how much extra does it cost?”
It’s a more accurate description. MagSafe is the plug at the end of the cable that plugs into the laptop via magnets. The charge brick is just a charge brick and is not MagSafe. It is usable with a MagSafe cable but is not MagSafe in itself. It is simply a USB-C PD charger. You can stick a USB-C cable on it and charge any Mac laptop (and many PC laptops) with no MagSafe to be seen. I suspect Apple might get sued if they called it a MagSafe charger since it isn’t MagSafe.

In the typical setup I use I would like the charge from the right side of the machine. What USB-C to USB-C cable should I use the connect the included 140w adapter? Can I buy the braided Apple C to C cable? I didn't see it on the store...

Is there a particular USB-C standard required to support that level of power?

It literally is a type-C power adapter and nothing more. The cable is what's different. It would be inaccurate to call the power adapter Magsafe if it doesn't include a Magsafe cable, and they aren't including the cable which is the same thing they did before with the type-C power adapters.
I guess you either didn’t fully read OR comprehend my comment..

Maybe I don't comprehend your comment, because I don't know what you want them to do. Call the power adapter something that it's not?

The cable is nice, and glad it'll still charge from USB-C. It'd be nice to know what the fully loaded power pull is - if the 140 is just for fast charging meh. If it actually uses that much power during heavy loads, that's a different story. USB-C/TB only allows for 100 watts of power, so it's the difference between being able to use a dock/monitor to power the system and having to use the power cord.

It does come with one in the box. At first I thought it didn’t.
Can we confirm this? I noticed it said "140W USB-C Power Adapter" in my order, but I never actually saw the cable itself mentioned. Wondering if the cable will actually be the first accessory we'll need to purchase.

I didn’t expect that I’d prefer just USB C charging as opposed to MagSafe. I used to like MagSafe and thought it was a silly idea for Apple to remove it, but once I got used to usb c and being sore to use any usb c port to charge, I see that as an advantage. Furthermore, you don’t have to carry a specific power cord as almost any usb c cord would work. With the reintroduction of MagSafe, that’s no longer the case.

And why call it MagSafe which confuses the I-devices version of MagSafe.

It is still the case - you can charge from any of the USB C/Thunderbolt ports in addition to MagSafe.

Yes it includes the cable according to the tech specs on Apple’s website.

It says it is included in the "What's In The Box" section of their site

Yes! The return of a proprietary connector that easily wears out and breaks and falls out when you use it on your knee. FINALLY!

Edit: Yes i'm fully aware you can still charge with USB-C, I was being facetious. It's good the cable is still USB-C at the end and now braided. At least you can just replace the cable and use it with USB-C so it retains some flexibility and easy to repair/replace unlike the original.
Magsafe 1 chargers crapped out on me on a regular basis, even the side wire upgraded ones. Never had MagSafe 2 rap out, but never say never.

This is really awesome.
Now we have:
  • Lightning
  • USB-C
  • Mag Safe Notebooks
  • Mag Safe phones
Great job on the fragmentation Apple.
Android......... one cable to rule them all.

Problem is, if the MacBook catches fire, Apple will blame Anker, Anker will blame Apple. With such a high wattage, I’d recommend the Apple one
Anker is not a fly-by-night operator. They make good products. But I see your point and that can happen on any product. It would also mean except the original manufacturer, third party (or OEM) products will not exist.

I've had them fail like that, and took them back to the store, and as long as they're within the warranty period, they simply replace the entire charger without question.

Does anyone know if there will be a magsafe2 to magsafe3 adapter, just like there's a magsafe to magsafe2? I'm guessing not, since magsafe3 is USB-C PD.

I would have preferred even more TB4 over the SD card slot
I’d guess the SD slot is running off the internal USB bus like the webcam, trackpad, and keyboard.
My 2018 MacBook Pro that came with a USB-C cable for charging still remains white and no sign of discolouration. Meanwhile, the past 3 MacBook Pros with their MagSafe cables and their subsequent replacement all turned yellow, and started ripping apart with the jacket coming apart. Couldn't risk fire, so of course you replace it.

I hope these newer MagSafe cables are better.
They got rid of that crap plastic on the lightning cables, so even before the announcement it wasn’t likely that they’d bring it back
That sounds like a cable issue - this has never happened to be ever with an USB-C plug...it's one of the most stable and reliable connections ever made.
The ports do seem to wear faster than the stated life: I’ve got one that’s showing noticeable deterioration at maybe 3k insertions.
It could be that three ports are all the silicon supports right now. The presence of HDMI in that spot is better than nothing (although I would have actually preferred USB-A, but my video friends really like the return of that port FWIW).
Yeah, that’s my guess. A USB A port, even just a 2.0 one off the internal bus, would be useful but a HDMI port probably serves more customers better.

Wish Magsafe was just a tiny adapter you can plug on top of a USB-C port so that it can transmit power and data just like the USB-C? Someone may trip over it and that Magsafe plug will take off the whole USB-C cable? It’s a win-win.

Also you can still make it work in case you forget to bring the plug? Just get a regular C to C cable, along with a GaN power brick and you’re good to go.
