Looks real to me, but the rep indicated that FW might not work anymore. Imagine taking it in to the Genius Bar with it being under warranty!

From iTunes 8.2.1 Help file:

"You can connect any iPod, a Motorola phone featuring iTunes, or a third-party digital music player to your computer and then sync it with songs from your iTunes library. With some iPod models, you can also sync photos, videos, and games."

Looks like their chat guy might not be the best info source.

probably got republished from an old archive on the server or a "dummy page"

Considering every other item on the store and refurbs have breadcrumbs near the top next to the Home icon...so i think they just happened to get lucky and doubt youll actually receive anything...i doubt theyll even charge you.

I had an original iPod, and it worked better than any other iPod I've owned, including my iPhone. Came free with my iMac in 2001, used it almost every day until it finally died in 2007.

Wish I'd kept it and just replaced the drive...oh well.

Not An Actual Product Buyable From The Apple Store

This product was mistakenly put up by Apple and it is being taken down as soon as possible.

Dammit, and I just bought one off of craigslist for $20. :D But I don't think I would have paid $136.74 for one. Nope, positive I wouldn't. A warranty would be nice, even though I don't use it. Only bought it for the simple fact that it was the only iPod I've never owned. Now I do.;) As far as collectors items, if it is in a refurb box and not those original non-green, non-minimalist purdy thangs, I would think the value would suffer. But I could be wrong. Nevertheless, interesting (for nerds like us who care).

i have the 10Gb model, still in original box.
yes no dock connector.
still works though

Anyway, something is up.

1 - they have a pic of the 3rd gen ipod
2 - says scroll wheel
3 - says touch wheel
4 - IPOD capitalized

However am I correct in thinking this is a MAC specific model ?

How do you get the Apple Store chat? I thought they removed that feature... Can't see it in the Canadian, British, Japanese, or American online stores :(

Just checked my order,Shows it to be a 10gb model, not yet shipped(it's only been 20 minutes). We'll see if it cancels shortly.

If you click on a product, then the blue Apple Store box in the upper left hand corner changes and adds a chat button to it.

You have to select a product first then wait about 15 seconds after the page loads to get the chat button.

That's not working for me... I'm leaving some product pages from the Canadian and US stores, waited for a minuet or so... still nothing.

Looks real to me, but the rep indicated that FW might not work anymore....

I don't think that is correct--as long as the iPod physically supports it, I don't believe iTunes has explicitly removed that feature. (Of course, newer iPods can use only USB anyway, but iPods that support either or only a FireWire connection should still work.)

1st Gen?

I own a 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and Touch iPods.. plus a mini and a nano.
The pictured iPod is a 3rd Gen iPod. It has the 4 buttons on top of the scroll wheel. The 4th gen did not have those.
They do say previous with scroll wheel... but all of them had the scroll wheel. Maybe they meant the "mechanical scroll wheel" which was only found on the 1st gen.

"These 1st generation iPods do not have a dock connector, correct? Only firewire and therefore cannot be charged through USB?"

Correct, 1st and 2nd gen did not have dock connectors or USB.. it was Firewire, but the firewire charges the device, plus it allows it to be used as an external HD.. and of course, it syncs fine with iTunes. They did include the small power brick with firewire... and it will also charge while connected to your Mac.

Very cool if real. I used to have one of these. And best part is it works in OS 9!!!

:)

The rep is an idiot. First generation - 4th generation iPods connecting via firewire still work fine under iTunes.

He must be thinking about recent iPods and the iPhone... Apple doesn't support syncing recent iPods using firewire.

Right I still have my Firewire dock from my 3rd Gen and it won't sync my other (newer) devices.

i have an original 1st generation iPod. I confirm that it definitely does sync just fine with the latest version of iTunes (8.2.1) over firewire. It actually syncs really really fast (never understood why they killed off firewire in iPods). Updating and everything still works as expected. I can even use it interchangeably on OS 9 with iTunes 2.0.4 and it doesn't confuse newer versions.

P.S. This is super awesome if they are actually selling these. I think they could make huge amounts of cash selling this as well as other retro items.

Just bought one. Hopefully I can get some resale value in a couple years on ebay. If it's sealed in box, I won't open it. If it's not, it'll be fun to play with in the meantime.

OR my order will be cancelled. We'll see.

Keep us posted. I want to see the outcome of this, especially for those who ordered!
