... but the rep indicated that FW might not work anymore...

FW still works in iTunes. I still use my old 3rd gen iPod as my dedicated in car iPod, and it still syncs perfectly, through FW.

They cut it out of the hardware because it can save them money (but it is bs because fw is better than usb...), but it doesn't save them any money deleting a line of code in iTunes, there would be no reason for them to remove it.

That has to be some sort of error. A first gen iPod is not worth $130.

It's a collector's item... 1st gen iPod in perfect condition...
You get firewire (faster than the USB that the current gen use) and also can install Linux on these ones if you like.

Give it 50 years and I reckon the 1st gen will be worth more than the current classic models.

Just "ordered" one about an hour ago. I figure it's more than likely not going to happen, but it's not a phishing scam because it's legitimately "through" Apple, one way or another. I've wanted one for about a year, so if it turns out to be real I'll be stoked, otherwise it'll be as if it never happened, so I've got nothing to lose. Sweet deal if it's legit though.

It's not, though. Just a mistake in Apple. They are working on removing it right now.

I just ordered it too. After all, could always return it I guess?

I have seen many old products on Apple online store before. I have seen ibooks and powerbooks and the ipod USB stick shuffle. It is not uncommon.

It is to me. I would pay upwards of $500 for an original ipod in packaging. Even more if it still worked.

I have a 1st gen iPod with it's original packaging... and it works. I replaced the battery a year ago or so.

You serious about paying more than $500?

Pretty sure they never did. But it's probably just some web guy being careless (still to be seen what the result of their whole situation will be).

TUAW also reports they have 1st gen 1GB Shuffles for sale - by far the best Shuffle model Apple ever made.

Also Refurbished 512MB iPod shuffle + Free Apple iPod shuffle External Battery Pack for $49.

I just asked an apple rep if it was real and they said it was a mistake and they are in the process of taking it down.

Thanks to the guys who answered my question about the firewire only and no dock connector on the 1st Gen iPod.

I have the 4th Gen 20 gig and it has a dock connector and both firewire and usb connection wires plus firewire brick.

The older iPods are not compatible with newer USB cube plug ins for iPods. Wasted thirty bucks on that and bf lost the wire anyway.

A few years ago the 512mb original shuffles were refurbed at 29 dollars so 49 bucks is a lot of cash for them...

however their superior sound cards make the original shuffle worth it. My 1 gig still goes strong and is the best gym ipod for sound and convenience.

Would have been pretty cool if it was real ;)

Remember too that back then you got a lot more for your money.

My first iPod was one of the first models with the scroll wheel. It cost me $549 Cdn, and that was with education pricing. But, for that money, I not only got the iPod, with its usual headphones and Firewire cable, but also a black carrying case, an iPod dock, an inline remote control, and the AC adaptor.

ipod-chat

how do you do that, Apple Store chat?????

I still have an original one of these in mint condition and full working order! If there selling for that kind of money, Perhaps it's time for ebay!!!

i still have mine, works fine, though the battery life isn't great anymore :D

California -- no dock connector, correct, just the old school FW400 port

The battery in my 3rd gen died so I bought one of those battery replacement kits. It came with non-marring tools to lever the case open and fitting the replacement battery was pretty easy. The end result is that the battery life is better than when it was new so hopefully it will run for another five years.

Well worth doing. Something rather nice about these old models and mine is a 40GB one so is pretty big and chunky. It is a shame the new ones don't come with all the extras that came standard with mine (dock, remote control, mains charger, firewire cable and a belt clip case).

well from what i remember those kinds of batteries have a shelf life as well as life from wear. so if its really very old, its capacity will be much reduced. you'd have to buy a replacement kit and rip the thing open rather soon.

if it was still my primary iPod i would have replaced the battery, but now its only use is in my office, where i can plug it in whenever i need to. i still love it, it's built like a tank. weighs about the same as one too :p

I'm on the phone right now and he can't find it in the Canadian store so I can't order one.

Then after looking around for a while and chatting with somebody he said it was fake and put there by a third party website. I don't know how that works, maybe a third party submitted it to the store like how Apple sells other third party things. He then said that he thinks all the orders will end of being canceled.

Damn, and I was going to buy one! I'd still take the chance if I could order one in Canada. :(

Sorry to be off-topic, but your username is awesome! :D

Anyway, this is so badly written and so full of errors, it's probably a mistake.

Also, I had a 1st gen iPod shuffle, the 1GB model, it's amazing when I think how the 1GB was the most expensive one just a few years ago and now 8GB is considered small!
