I just got it, but I haven't heard anything about a refund....

Got the e-mail earlier today while I was at work. =( I thought maybe if I wished and hoped hard enough it would turn out to be real. As far as a refund is concerned, it's not necessary because there was never a charge. It never actually went through and charged the credit card, so if you got charged for it, I would call Apple. That was a fun 2 days though, thinking I had a 0.01% chance of getting a 5GB 1st gen iPod for $129.

first gen ipods

I'm sure if they found an old box of 50 of these, selling them for $129 to collectors etc. is the perfect way to make some easy cash.

They are practically worthless in terms of parts/features, but I guarantee they will all sell!

Hmmm.... well I have mine right here in my drawer. Couldn't toss it. It works fine except I think the inner sleeve for the ear piece might be worn away. Some ear mics work fine, some loose contact. But it plays just dandy...

And anyone want one for $45 and it's yours, you antique collectors out there

My bank statement says otherwise. :p

It's what we Collectors call "A Warehouse Find" - someone found a whole bunch and why not just sell them off? They won't be needing them anymore as far as replacements (Apple did this with the 4 Gig iPhones).

I recall someone here on MR selling a 1st Gen unit still in the Refurb box.

The page you're looking for can't be found.

Damn, I wanted to look at that …

But this reminded me to take my 4G out of the box again :D

Again, everyone keeps saying things like "they will sell a lot of these!" I ordered one right away. 7 hours later I got an email saying "we cannot fill your order because the item is no longer available. It has been removed from your order."

There were about 2 of those refurbs.
I remember I was trying to sell a 1G in the retail box here as well. I ended up trading it for the last rev. 12" PB. I don't even have that anymore. Anyway, I love the 1/2G iPods. The FW port was the sticky point because they came loose after a while.

You traded a iPod for a PowerBook? Wow, well done! I couldn't even swap my iPod touch for one of them!

FYI, firewire works just fine

FYI, I still sync my old third-gen iPod via firewire all the time. First one almost certainly should still work too. This is on Snow Leopard.

Pretty bummed about this. If anyone has one and can ship to UK/is in UK, please PM me. I've been looking all over for one, and the only one on ebay at the moment looks like it's falling apart.
Thanks

Want one?

I do want one but I don't wanna pay for it and I don't want to have to actually use it... they're nice little eye candy collectibles :)

Apple didn't "charge" you, they just put an authorization hold on. In the event that the order was going to go through they would then convert that hold into a charge once it's time to ship the item. In the event that the order gets cancelled they release the hold and the money comes back to your account. Authorization holds can work differently with different banks. Retailers aren't required to release the hold back to your account because that happens automatically after a certain amount of time (depends on the bank) but some retailers do actually specifically release holds. I don't know what Apple does. Some banks like Citizens Bank in New England release held funds back into your account if they are not turned into charges in 48 hours (although the authorization still exists so they can convert it into a charge after the funds have been released, leading some people who are not quite as alert as others into believing they have more "available balance" than they actually do) and some other banks don't release holds for up to 30 days.

It's a pretty standard practice for companies to perform authorization holds for items that are being shipped, and then converting that hold into a charge as soon as the package is shipped.
