Oh, I read that same article. But you should have checked the backseat of your DeLorian for illegal artifacts before returning from 15 years in the future.

And make sure that he / she didn't sit on a live 1.21 gigawatt power tap in said DeLorian.

I hear that can cause momentary insanity! :p

Now who would give this a negative vote?
Here's to the next 100 million Apple, congratulations!

Honestly, I'd say I'm disappointed. 100,000,000+ iPods and we've got something that has a small screen, moderately heavy, plays a limited format of movies, and many people complain about replacement/repair costs. I'd say Apple could have done better, much better.

Now, before I get fellow Apple people flipping out and screaming, it should be noted that I do love my iPod anyway and I am certainly glad I have it. However, I am no longer impressed by tiny revisions and form factors that are the same for over a year with almost no drop in price (also see: mac pro). A second thing to note, I KNOW that Apple is in it to make money and not impress us with high technology at a low cost. It goes without saying.

So at the end of the day: 100,000,000+ iPods and nothing jaw dropping about them. Bleh.

And no, I didn't vote negative for it.

Congrats Apple. Wonder How Many Years To 1 Billion?

Wouldn't be surprised if they reach 1 Billion sold in the next 5 years. That first 100 Million was the hard part. I'm sure it's going to be a lot more sooner faster now that the iPod is the defacto standard for most listeners.

I think the new 1GB clip-on Shuffle has really changed my life. Looking forward to the true widescreen "mini-HD" 640 x 360 (one third HD res) 120GB Video iPod this Fall. ;) Could be another seminal moment in commnuications paradigm shifting consciousness. With a portable screen that large, the device can start to become an honest replacement for TV among those on the go. No doubt multi-touch will play a serious role in that success just as it will with the iPhone.

moderately heavy,

Come on! Your either very very weak(I doubt thats it) or just lazy. If cut down a few oz on the iPod really a huge deal? Chance are we'd lose battery life. Also have you see the 30Gb iPod 5.5G? That thing is slim.

Honestly, get over it!

Whoa there cowboy. It's just an opinion.

ipods in U.S.

the population of the U.S. is about 300,000 so that means that there a third of the population of the US is the same number of iPods sold to date:apple: :apple: :apple: :apple: :apple: :apple: :apple: :apple:

2nd Gen iPod 20GB

Still using my lovely 20GB 2nd G iPod. I can still get a good 4 hours from it. But this weekend in VT, it didn't last 2 runs on the mountain. Holding out for the NEXT BIG iPod release! Bring the true widescreen out! :)

I really had to think about it.

1 3G iPod
1 4G iPod
1 Blue iPod mini
1 Blue iPod mini (updated model)
1 Pink iPod mini
1 Black nano
1 Black nano (updated model)
1 5G iPod (Black)
1 5.5G iPod (White)

Wow, 9 iPods. Over $3,000 with tax and all of the extras through the years.

Scary. (But I still have not learned my lesson. I still will buy the iPhone, updated iPod nano and most likely the updated video iPod too.)

Well, for all of the vices to have, this is not the worst...

I'm really glad to see them reach this milestone. I wish I had helped more, as I've only bought one -- a 3G 30GB iPod.

Hmmm...I did get a nice federal tax refund this year...

I have 3 iPods, and I love them all!

I keep on having to repair the volume with Disk Utility with my 5g 30GB iPod though, which gets annoying.

I've bought 3 over the years, a 2g 4GB green iPod mini, 1g 1/2 GB iPod shuffle, and 5.0g white 30GB iPod. Okayy... so the 5G was a gift. But I did buy the mini and shuffle myself.

And to think, if I (or my dad) hadn't bought those iPods, Apple would've only sold 99,999,997.

still on Pod #1 here...2g 10 gig. still cranks out the tunes just fine, but oh the thought of a widescreen Pod with touch controls has me drooling all over this Apple Bluetooth keyboard...

CompUSA was the place to buy for a long time. They had a replacement program (they called it TAP) and it was also a "technology upgrade" plan. The way it worked was you bought an ipod and when and if there was a new one with more features that became available, you just brought in your old one and pay the difference. The plan was $29 and it was a 2 year deal. Little did they know that Apple would be releasing new models every 6 months or so and for the same or less money. There was only 2 times I had to pay a $100 difference. For the 2nd and 4th ones I got.

After that, because the prices remained the same (or cheaper), I would just walk in with the old and walk out with the new with nothing wrong with the ipod I just turned in! I was amazed that no one cared. I would always go to the same store because they all knew me and I wanted to stay where I was well-liked.

Of course, I never could keep my old one but I didn't care because I was upgrading for just $29 each time. I believe on the last couple of ipods I paid $39 but by then, CompUSA changed their policy and didn't allow it anymore... I did the same thing with my Cinema Displays, too! Believe me: the rush of getting a newer generation ipod for nothing is awesome but walking in with a 14month old 23" Cinema Display and walking out with a new alluminum job for NOTHING is just about out-of-this-world mind-blowing...

About my 'pods:

1) Original 1G 5GB - bought 11/12/01 -- my 36th birthday -- $399 (+$29 TAP)
2) 1G 10GB - $100 difference (+$29 TAP)
3) 2G 10GB - $0 (+$29 TAP)
4) 2G 20GB - $100 (+$39 TAP)
5) 3G 30GB - $0 (+39 TAP)
6) 3G 40GB - $0 -- stopped buying TAP here.

7) 1G 5GB refurbished at some point for a friend from Apple ($199)
8) 5.5G 80GB for wife ($299)
9) 2G Shuffle for wife ($79)
10) 2G Shuffle for myself ($79)
11) 5.5 30GB for my tax guy($249)

About $1650 over 5.5 years for 11 ipods! Crazy!

Displays:

1) Original style 22" Cinema Display $1,999 (+$109 TAP)
2) Original 23" HD Cinema Display $0 (+$109 TAP)
3) Original 23" HD Cinema Display w/Aluminum Enclosure $0 (didn't by TAP on this one as I was told policy was changing.)

$2217 for 3 Displays!

Of course, I never could keep the ones brought in so it's not like I had 3 displays at once... it was like I was renting displays for on average 15 months for $109! I miss TAP!!!!

Big bucks!

Between the super expensive ones sold at $599 and the $79 ones, I'm guessing the average for a 'pod is about $250 --

With that average, 100,000,000 ipods sold is $25 Billion!!! What a staggering amount of cash!

Nothing scientific about the figure, but just a guess... thoughts?

You would also have to calculate and subtract R&D and the manufacturing cost per unit, so that figure would be significantly less ...but still a lot of money.
