100 000 000, hey...? That is a lot of iPods... :)

I'm proud to say I've purchased 0,00000002 of those iPods, one green 1G mini for myself and a silver 2G nano as a birthday present for my girlfriend (which in turn gave me a black 2G nano for Christmas).

Calculator? ;)

The rates still need adjustment for acceleration of the rate of sale. Though for the first few years the iPod probably sold less than 38 a minute (probably less than 10 a minute in the first year or two!), it probably now sells, say, one a second, or perhaps 50 a minute. Or more.

Thread 500. And really, you never know if something is going to succeed or fail until it does, in my opinion. Which is why, though I do criticize those who say the iPhone will fail drastically for reason X or Y, I don't yell out that it will definitely succeed either.
...

Oh man that thread is awesome. It shows everyone's mindset at the time. Even funnier that no one had any understanding of the value of the device. I was humbled reading many posters' responses that were about the tech specs and how it wasn't revolutionary... they had some very good points, and yet this was the most runaway hit the world has ever seen.

Of course, I would argue that the pod didn't become revolutionary until the clickwheel with no buttons... what was that G3?

I wonder if the iPhone will count towards iPod sales? Probably not. I'd really like an iPhone because (1) it's about time I got a cell phone, (2) bigger screen for movies and (3) it looks cool.

Awesome!

Though :apple: is treating the iPod like the ugly, unwanted stepdaughter now that cute baby iPhone is about to pop out. I actually considered buying a PSP just to have a proper widescreen video player! I mean, a PSP... HONESTLY!

It annoys me a bit to know (well not "know," but come on!) that :apple: is sitting on a widescreen iPod in order to boost sales of the iPhone. June can't come fast enough.

I'd love to know total sales of Sansa, iRiver, Creatives, and Zunes :p

That is a lot of iPods, wonder how this compares to the Walkman.

It took Sony 20 years to sell 100 million Walkmans (portable cassette players, this figure doesn't include the subsequent media players and cd players that were rebranded Walkman).

When you first think about it...its like.."wow 100 million"....but then....try and picture a million ipods.....and then multiply that by 100 and its like...WOW...

great sucess :apple: !

congrats!

the key is to listen to customers need ; it's your way to get sucess and it's the customer way to get satisfied!!

three thumbs up :apple: !!!

my purchases

three 3G 20GB iPods ( all still work nicely) The batteries have all been replace (easy to do and $17 CND each)
one 4G 40 GB iPod
one silver shuffle

3 iPod nanos as gifts

1 white shuffle from the bank as a gift.

We will be buying 5 iPhones as a family when they come out to replace our iPods. Expensive yes, but I don't care. I love the features and especially the simplicity !!

Will sell off the iPods or use them as portable storage HD's.

It is understandable. The iPhone is obviously a big deal from a R&D standpoint, and a new iPod prior to its release would very likely undercut sales. Look for a new iPod late summer or early fall after the initial iPhone hype subsides.

These guys know what they are doing.

I've had 5 ipods

2 40 GB (3rd gen?) models that I wound up giving away and one of the recipients subsquently breaking it.

2 60 GB (5th gen?) that I still have, one of which I use in bedroom with "Hi Fi", the other is kind of collecting dust (I thought I lost one, bought a replacement, and found the "lost" one..)

1 orange shuffle--I use this every day--amazing to realize that this is what I really need--abolutely convenient, basically pick a playlist (in my case, an artist) per week and I'm pretty much set.

The only bad thing about the ipods--the ear buds. I recommend that everyone gets one of those Shure E2s. Will significantly ehance your listening pleasure.

It looks like Apple has sold more than 11 million iPods in Q2. This is another Q2 record, of course.

Q2 2006: 8 526 000 units

Q2 2005: 5 311 000 units

Q2 2004: 807 000 units

Q2 2003: 78 000 units

Q2 2002: 57 000 units

Quite impressiv numbers, I think.

For 2006, the rate was 1,5 iPods/second.

I bet the 2nd 100 millionth iPod ships in less than 3 years.

I hope the uptake for iPhone is close to the iPod experience.

I found something technically interesting on one of the accessory pages. This is a device that plugs into the dock port and converts to a firewire plug. The more recent iPods no longer even support Firewire data transfer, even through adapters!

"The tiny PocketDock FireWire is an indispensable iPod accessory that lets you connect the iPod's dock port to a standard 6-pin FireWire cable.

When you're on the road with your iPod, listening to your favorite hits, you may unexpectedly want to connect to another Mac or PC — to exchange files, or maybe just to charge the iPod's battery. When you need it most, you'll probably find that you didn't bring the special iPod docking cable — it's at home connected to your computer. The PocketDock is the elegant, simple solution to this common problem.

This PocketDock is compatible with the following iPods:

* 3G iPod (touch-wheel with four buttons in a row)
* 4G iPod (click-wheel)
* 5G iPod (video) — supports FireWire only for charging, not for syncing.
* iPod photo
* iPod mini
* iPod nano — supports FireWire only for charging, not for syncing.
