I've received a shipping confirmation, and it looks like my iPad is at a FeDex warehouse in Ontario,CA, just about 15 miles away from my house. I've called them up and was informed that the "the company who shipped it" (I'm assuming the lady didn't know it was Apple), asked for a future delivery, and there's no way I could stop by the warehouse to pick it up...

I didn't get tracking info until today and I live in NJ and it says overnight shipping from PA for Future delivery for Friday the 16th.

This is one of the fastest worldwide roll outs in Apple history. Last year, it was several weeks after the US launch before anyone in Europe was able to order. The factories have only so much capacity.
That may be.
But Apple could still release the new iPad worldwide at the same time. Simply share the available units, just like they do with the MacBook Pro, Air, etc.

It's not rocket science to send 1.000.000 units to the US, 1.000.000 units to Europe and 1.000.000 to Asia, instead of 3.000.000 units to the US. The numbers may be different, but you get the picture. ;)

Hate to be a naysayer...

But I think that all of these people who are seeing "shipped" and that the item is already at a FedEx station in the US are really seeing their smart covers, etc.

I bought mine at the same time as two people in my office. They showed a shipped status, then got their smart covers within a day. Now their order shows preparing to ship. Same as mine, and I didn't order the smart cover.

I didn't buy a smart cover. My shipment is in Nashville.

Distribution strategy is an important part of marketing. Like it or not, the US is a core market for them and will likely always get an "outsized" allocation. If anything, they will build up China more than Europe in future releases.

I preordered my new iPad right after the press release on the 7th. My FedEx tracking notification includes this information: Ship Date of March 9, 2012,
Estimated Delivery Date of March 16, 2012 by 3:00 PM and for Service Type, it states Standard Overnight. My question was, if it shipped March 9th and it is overnight shipping, I should get it on Monday the 12th. So yesterday March 10th I called FedEx. The representative explained that they are to hold the orders until the 15th for Standard Overnight delivery on the 16th. Guess Apple didn't want we preorder folks to get ours before the rest of the folks? Waiting patiently.

the launch date is Friday, that is when they will be delivered or available at store.

thats standard. this happens every year with ipad and iphone. UPS and fed ex hold all of them till launch day, although some always slip through the cracks and people get them early, and when i say some i mean hardly any

Now a lot of people are trying to figure out a way to beat the future delivery restriction. Good grief dudes! We all were able to wait how many months for this thing to be introduced and ya'll can't wait a few more days??? Give it a rest. My thought is that if one person get's their's delivered early, they will be standing on the mountaintop shouting they are the King of the world and meanwhile Apple execs will meet to discuss the demise of the pre-order button. Give it a rest. We get them on Friday.

Call me old fashioned...

But I'd like to see it in person before I shell out $500. I can deal with waiting a couple of weeks.

Why wouldn't Apple work with Fed Ex to "upgrade" the supply chain to allow them to stage product at a secure Fed Ex location allowing them to time delivery for March 16th? It seems pretty easy and reasonable to do. I'm sure Apple can forecast how many iPads they want at each location.

Every parcel has a unique ID, and I'm sure they can be physically organized in a way to make the logistics pretty easy to append a shipping label with the shipping location while it's sitting in some warehouse.

It's continuous improvement in shipping, and will probably help FedEx (or whatever shipping company) become more trusted partners with Apple.

I'll be they're jealous over at Amazon Fulfillment.

Apple haters always say "the new [insert product here] isn't new at all! Nobody's going to buy it!"

Yet this happens every time :)

Yep, it's apparent that no one wants to buy Apple products anymore. Sure looks like Apple is definately becoming irrelevant. Now where have I heard this before? :D

Everyone trying to "beat" or "cancel" the future delivery restriction must be pre-ordering an Apple product for the first time.
Apple isn't the only one who does this. Most companies who sell preorders will work directly with the shipping company to ensure release day delivery. Apple is doing the shipping companies the favor of giving stock to them early, so that they can adequately organize their deliveries, and the shippers aren't about to screw that relationship up.
Everyone who ordered the iPhone 4S just last year had the same thing happen. Their package was oh so close to them, but because of the future delivery restriction, everyone had to wait until the Friday release day. Including me - my phone was basically across town for 3 days just waiting for Friday release day.

Of course there will be a few that get delivered anyway by mistake, I bet by this Wednesday even. You'll see posts on here and elsewhere of a lucky few that got it delivered. But it will be very few. Good luck that you are one of the lucky few to get them early. It'll be because of an error within the shipping company, not because of a call that was made canceling or beating any sort of future delivery restriction.

Is there any way to stop the hold on a "future delivery" shipment?

No. See my response just above.

Exactly. March 16th is the official launch, and is the date that those of us who got our pre-orders in by Thursday should expect to receive it. We'll still get it a week or two before people who order it now. :)

Scratch March 19th shipping. Now the web site says 2-3 weeks for new orders. It's officially sold out. :)

As a shareholder, I like to hear that. I wouldn't be surprised if they sold 2 million over the weekend. They averaged just over 1 million per week during the Christmas quarter. With some pent up demand (since "iPad 3" hype kicked into high gear in mid-February), and the most widespread launch yet in terms of countries, this will be a big seller, and my question last week about whether there will be lines outside the stores on Friday is answered.

Hopefully not very many of us who pre-ordered opted to pick it up in the store on Friday. I should have it Friday night when I get home from the office (one advantage of living in a building with a doorman).

Hey I'm reading apple announced they postponed the new iPad release date to the 19th....is this true because I don't see it written anywhere on their website

I just ordered yesterday and have a shipping confirmation of 2nd April with delivery of 10th of April, so I'd guess it's selling quite well!
