As for iPhones and iPads, 100% of the devices running iOS 11 today are all upgradeable to iOS 12.5.7, so no iPhone devices would actually be excluded (because they are quietly upgradeable to the next release). By the way, iOS 12 was also the operating system where more stability and bug fixes were dedicated back then, so it's only fair in the end.

I don’t really use any Apple services except the free iCloud and my OS versions are always the latest, so no impact to me. But why Apple? There can’t be a technical reason, so this does not make any sense to me
It only impacts software released in late 2017 to early 2018. Since it’s such a narrow range of software they are targeting I imagine there is a technical reason. Must be some vulnerability that they are trying to close the loop on.

This IS the latest version for many devices. They shouldn’t be disabling basic functionality. Can’t even install apps anymore on some of these iPhones.
It's actually NOT the latest version for any device that may still be on one of these ancient softwares.

Any iOS device that runs iOS 11, runs iOS 12. And the other devices all have newer software updates available.

As long as the hardware affected has an upgrade path to continue to receive supported services. But if they do something like just timing out hardware support for core services that were once supported that could lead to a lot of user contention and potential class actions.

If you have a Mac on 10.13 that isn't capable of updating to 10.14 Mojave, I think Apple should try their best to continue to support it.

That being said, every iOS 11 device can update to iOS 12

You didn't read the article, did you? Yes, 10.13 is the latest OS for a lot of Macs, but 10.13.3 is NOT the latest version. Any Mac that can only do 10.13, can/should be on 10.13.6 which does not seen to be affected by this rumored change.
I think many are missing the fact that there are newer incremental updates available for ALL of these devices.

None of the affected operating system updates were the final release for their compatible devices.

I may have misunderstood for iPhones… this isn’t super clear solely going by the way it’s worded, but in the event devices stuck on older versions of iOS predating iOS 11 can still access these services then maybe it’s not so much of a problem in that case.

For Apple Watch series 0, which I would still be gladly using today if the screen hadn’t broken, is still stuck on 4.2.3, and I think it’s disgusting that they are disabling core functionality from a premium device that cost hundreds of dollars and isn’t even a decade old. Maybe soon it won’t even keep time.

Series 0 is supported up to 4.3.2, which is not affected by this bug.

iOS 8.4.1 can't log into iCloud.
Apple TV 3rd Gen can't log into iCloud.

iOS 12 is ready to fall yet still works great for most of my tasks like pages numbers iBook calendar.

We need a lite version of iOS 16 for older devices but that's not going to happen.
Too bad there's not an remote iOS virtual version that is 100% iCloud based so that older devices will still work as long as it's connected to the internet so it runs the latest iOS versions remotely.

And seriously, why would anyone be on these versions? Upgrade to the latest version for your device!

Maybe because your device is not eligible for a more recent version of the OS, does its job and you cannot/do not want to replace it just for software issues like this. Possible reasons for that are many: money, desire not to throw away a device that is not physically broken, etc.

How to say forced upgrades, without saying forced upgrades. The revenue have been declining this is another move to "force upgrades".

Is this the reason the Weather app stopped functioning even on iPhone 14???

Fortunately every device that runs these versions can be updated. It's only a small window of minor updates affected.
