Good correction

It is a fair and notable point, however, that he's reducing their exposure on this investment by such a large percentage and reversing their long trend of being fully all in on Apple future growth

It's an expression of at least some form of the sentiment on the Berkshire side

If, conversely, they'd upped their stake by an additional 25% -- I'm sure we'd be correctly commenting on what that would indicate about their feelings on Apple for the future.
So the connection to a future apple failure is now heralded by BH 25% divestment of AAPL?

Surprised the world at large has missed this.

All that money and the os have barely changed. I most definitely will not be upgrading to another iPhone again, not until they add real features because it’s been the same and very simple and is still very limited. They need to stop with the hardware and focus on the software like they used to. All I see is new hardware and the same software. They added Apple Intelligence, which is nothing but an upgrade to Siri. They almost function the same. I mean, they added ChatGPT, but I am not going to pay $ 20 a month for it. I mean, I don’t use it anyway. I mean, I find the Microsoft Edge Copilot to be way more useful. They also added widgets, which to me are nothing but shortcuts in my opinion. They literally barely have any functionality, and the Dynamic Island is pretty useless. Adding all this power to the iPhone just to only view one app at a time is crazy. The money they cost is not worth it at all.

Shareholder here (personal investments plus 401k). I could not care less about Apple's market cap.

Additionally, they could use this extra money to pay dividends instead of stock-buybacks.

Apple is currently paying quarterly dividends of $.25/share.

When you think about that… what does Apple really have beside a die hard brand following group.

I mean… they don’t produce anything. Their software is falling behind and the quality of it too.

They’ve the knowledge of the M-series of chips. But that’s a matter of time that Qualcomm beats them too.

They have brand loyalty for sure and a strong protected ecosystem.

All the hardware they’re selling isn’t theirs. All parts of other vendors.

So what value does Apple really have?

Answer to the [hopefully rhetorical] question of “So, what value does Apple really have?“:
  1. “a die hard brand following group”,
  2. “the knowledge of the M-series of chips”, and
  3. “brand loyalty for sure and a strong protected ecosystem”.
Question: What does Apple lack that is not encapsulated in, a necessary pre-condition of, or implicit in the above? 🤔

Never a clearer example of this than with the iPad. New hardware every year , great CPU, fantastic screens, same old OS.

They are too comfortable, there really isn't enough competition.

Great product people that can come up with something new.

Arguing Apple needs to innovate in software and complaining about Apple Intelligence is certainly a take.

It’s a shame the competition has failed so spectacularly in the tablet line. Google are a multi-trillion dollar company and have failed miserably at making a compelling software experience for tablets.

In addition:
What counts as active? Daily use? Weekly? Monthly? Network access? Powered up? Is my 12” G4 PowerBook, that I power up once or twice a year an active device?

What counts as a device? Air tag? Is an AirPod 1 device or is it 2 devices or is it 3? Is an Apple TV remote as separate device? Cables? Cleaning cloth?

Great question. According to Perplexity AI:

“Apple uses the term "active units" in its marketing to refer to devices that are actively being used by customers. This typically includes devices that have been activated and are in regular use, such as iPhones with active SIM cards or devices connected to Apple services like iCloud. It excludes devices that are inactive, such as those not yet activated or no longer in use.”

I think what matters here and is often overlooked when commenting on Apple software quality is scale. I can’t think of another company managing software development, maintenance, distribution and user support at a comparable, billions of units scale.

While there are obvious problems in software quality that impact Apple users on a daily basis, at this scale, truly poor software quality would be reflected in Apple’s CSAT ratings and result in a cost of poor quality that would severely impact the company’s profitability. The fact that neither of these situations are happening suggest the generalized “poor software quality” characterization as largely anecdotal.

I think people are more into the brand then actual software I guess because iam serious multi tasker probably the reason I have that opinion apple and they products if I didn’t have this iPad I probably wouldn’t have a iPhone anymore i feel like a lot of the iPad features should be on the iPhone i meman I don’t expect them to put stage manager in iOS tho lol

I’m with you on wanting to see a new breakout product that makes my life better. In the mean time I’m enjoying every imperfect Apple product I have. I also understand the desire to see innovation and year-over-year improvements with each product, but acknowledge the difficulty of Apple living up to these expectations based on diminishing returns as each product approaches peak-functionality/performance for their intended use cases.

After having Samsung galaxy s23 and one of the Samsung tabs way more functionality then iPadOS and iOS I had the first android and i have had the first iPhone and both have came along way but android is mostly definitely head when it comes to software once upon time apple was head of the game but that that’s no longer true because they made be head with hardware but they are behind when it comes to software in this day and time they are playing catch up

15.95 years ago on 20-Jan-2009 I had money to buy 4,000 $AAPL shares.

After a total of 28-for-1 Stock Splits today it would be 112,000 $AAPL shares.

At $259.02/share price that portfolio would be worth $29,010,240.00 or ₱1,685,610,895.03.

Last 4 Quarters Dividend was $100,800.00 or ₱5,851,021.84.

I think I'd retire comfortably in the Philippines if I cash out when Apple Inc hits $4 trillion or just enjoy the dividends in a country where over 4 of 5 adults made no more than $4,300 or ₱250,000 annually.

This did not occur because the eTrade documentation was intimidating even when my HS buddy who was into stocks for a decade was with me and I had parents & uncles who were financially literate.

Opportunity loss for at the time a late 20-something.
In January 2009, the AAPL cost per share was $90.13 (source: https://www.digrin.com/stocks/detail/AAPL/price). To purchase 4000 shares, it will cost around $360,520.00 (USD) in 2009 dollars. That is some serious money to spend on one stock investment, especially coming from the Philippines which is considered a 3rd world country.

Being from Google is an immediate no go for me. I want more operating systems like iOS from privacy minded companies.

They could be paying $2/share if they weren't doing stock buybacks.

Again, I don't really care about dividends, but I'm 100% anti-stock buybacks, unless a company is going private. No exceptions. It's a market manipulation tool used to prop up stock price unsteady of the market deciding, and nothing more. Legal or not, it's unethical as hell.

If I had the option, I would like a privacy-minded device from a company without an ecosystem, that doesn't sell or push services. Sell me the device, and we're done. One and done.

Pretty jaded about apple getting into services, and baking said services into their apps.

As apple trying to make more so call innovations its. Becoming less secure and to be honest. People shouldn’t be storing their entire life or any of these devices i have hacked android devices and apple devices. apple device where a little more challenging but still was able to be hacked privacy is almost nonexistent in todays times so once again people shouldnt store there entire life on any of these devices nothing is safe

Sounds like an innovative idea that is worth persuing. Could be disruptive to say the least.

You only need to follow the guidelines of “Bringing a product to market - 101”.

I contend that apple intelligence is a reactionary fail. It's not innovative, it's not interesting, its not good; it's a shove-in afterthought come up with in a panic.

Panicked reactions don't work, and oh boy is it currently showing. It's a flail, and an embarrassment.
I’m not embarrassed by it. Apple shouldn’t and hopefully be embarrassed by it. This is a new frontier and apple is treading carefully.

We’ll see where it goes.
