Apple Set to Increase LiDAR Chip Orders on Strong Demand for iPhone 12 Pro

The regular 12 is just pointless to be honest, they should have just simplified the lineup with the 12 mini, 12 pro and 12 pro max.

Timmy loves to upsell stuff. Same reason there is a iPhone 12 and a iPhone 12 Pro at the same size and on top of it having different base storage. Same with the iPad Air VS iPad Pro storage. It’s like „oh for XY more I can get more, might as well“ and by offerening more than enough choices, they don’t have to keep a „lower“ price point

Heck I was waiting for a 5G phone to upgrade. Same with my iPad Pro.

I doubt the demand is due to LIDAR.
Exploitation of Lidar for focussing in the dark is definitely a reason for my choice.

I don't know, experience will tell, but I hope it will help in my photographic endeavours.

Do the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max use exactly the same Lidar chips? Hence delayed 12 Pro Max launch currently snaffling Lidar chips and slowing up 12 Pro builds.

(Feeling grumbly my 12 Pro order shows no sign of arriving before 09/11/2020. :( )
My 12 Pro order originally showed an arrival date of 6 Nov but it’s now arriving today. So you might get it a little sooner than you think.

This is the same story each year. The pro models are always more popular upon release due to more tech savvy and affluent buyers right at the start. Over the 12 month cycle you will see more popularity for the cheaper 12, as upgrades become due, Christmas season and day to day purchases ramp up

Love my Base 12... I'm reasonably sure Apple will add Touch ID to the sleep/wake button a la iPad Air for 2021, and I'll go to a 12S, perhaps Pro then. (not sure they'd do an iPhone 13, even though they did iOS 13)

Oh please Lol. Every year Apple “didn’t expect this demand”.

I know it’s been a weird year, but come on... Apple is pandemic-proof and pretty much anything/proof.

ONE WEEK UNTIL 11/6!

Ah! Right - but mostly people have compared like-for-like.
"Most" sounds about right. But some people are looking for value, and 12 is oddly priced. They ramped up the price by $100 for Mini vs iP 11, and by $200 more for iP 12 vs iP 11, leaving iP 12 priced too closely to 12 Pro. Yes, same sizes, same display tech this year, but now Pro has more HW and SW capabilities.

$879 128 GB iPhone 12 vs $999 128 GB Pro, for just $120 more you get more future proof and premium phone (more RAM, Lidar, Stainless Steel, Telephoto, 4k60 Dolby and subjectively, better colors).

Has anyone got experience of a situation in which Apple have given a delivery window but miss it?

Do they just say "Sorry, but tough."? Or "Would you like a high-value voucher to use on the Apple Store?"?
Yep, it’s just an estimate and if they miss it then they miss it. In the US if they can’t ship within 2 weeks of order you can cancel your order.

Strategy works because of uneducated consumers?

I think early buyers tend to go more premium. It will even out over time with eventually the 12 outselling the 12 Pro. I also think a lot of people who would have got the 12 are waiting for the 12 mini because it is $100 less and is in a smaller footprint than some people prefer.

I'll wait until I see them in the flesh, but not entirely convinced.

Different - obviously. Better materials - quite possibly. Better colours is so subjective.
At the very least, the Pro won't be a fingerprint magnet. For the SS edges, maybe get a Bumper? 😅 iPhone 4, Antennagate, free Bumper case from Apple - win.

I'm coming from 5.5 inch Galaxy S7 edge, to backup 4 inch SE1 I use as daily driver ever since I got S6 AW and Airpods Pro, to base 5.4 inch Mini.
Base Mini or base Pro - nothing in between makes too much sense for me. Enjoy yours.

I'd have been perfectly happy with the standard 12 if it had the telephoto lens instead of the pointless wide camera. Had to go pro just for that. Haven't yet seen any obvious benefit to the LIDAR.
