Apple today shared a new ad that focuses on the iPhone 12's durability, specifically highlighting the Ceramic Shield display, which is meant to be tougher than standard smartphone glass.

In the ad, a woman's iPhone 12 slips out of her hand and she fumbles with it for several seconds before it flies out of her grip and lands on the ground, coming away unscathed.

"iPhone 12 with Ceramic Shield. Tougher than any smartphone glass. Relax, it's the iPhone," reads the video's caption.

All of the iPhone 12 models feature Ceramic Shield OLED displays, which Apple says offers four times better drop protection than was available with prior iPhone models.

The Ceramic Shield material, which comes from Corning, is made by infusing nano-ceramic crystals into glass to improve durability. Though the Ceramic Shield seems to be better able to withstand drops than prior iPhone display technology, it is still prone to scratching.

If it was a real iPhone, it would have started to shatter way before it actually landed in the softish dirt. ML would have quickly concluded that it would get flipped up, leading to a terminal impact on concrete and saved time by self destructing on the way down.

It took a really long time for that to just fall in the dirt. I wonder how much it will be to replace a screen if it falls. Will it be less because the screens are more durable or will it be more because they cost more from corning? Maybe it will be the same. Whatever it is, I hope it doesn't come with the sound on that commercial
Screen breakage is the cheapest repair. The back glass holds all the components and repair is barely viable. Bring back the pre iPhone 8 metal backs which seemed to work fine and were lighter.

Or just stop designing phones like fine china that gets stored in a cabinet and more like a really nice travel mug.

Someone needs to leak pictures of all the alterations that were made to the street.
Come on Timmy. Let’s have a making-of video.

Yeah this is a silly ad. Dirt? Face down? Yeah there would be little to no damage. For most landing on concrete or other hard services is the most common scenario. Would the screen survive? Likely. The fact is if you drop your iPhone without a case it will get scuffed or screen possibly cracked

That is why a case and screen protector go on my phone the very same day of purchase. Every iPhone I’ve resold for top dollar because they have been pristine. I’d love to rock my 12 Pro naked but it’d cause too much anxiety.

What’s up the quality of their ads now?

I tend to agree, on principle, but I think for wireless charging to work properly, the back must be made of either plastic or glass. In that case, I choose glass too.

The phone lands in sand. So what. The screen better not crack. What a stupid commercial.

Apple's advertising is probably the worst thing about the company. They really do come up with some lame ads and this one might be the worst. I really do miss when Apple used to be funny.
