The Pinto *was* less safe in rear crashes than many other cars of the era. While it shared one particular flaw (placement of the gas tank relative to the rear-axel differential) which made burst tanks more common than with vehicles where the tank was *above* the differential, it *also* had a flaw which would cause the tank to disconnect from the fill hose, making post-accident *spills* more common, even when the tank itself retained structural integrity.

This doesn't appear to be a QC issue at all, rather it appears to be a design flaw which escaped QA.
QC has to do with manufacturing variance during production.
QA has to do with ensuring the design is suitable for production in the first place.

Ah, you're right. The Quality Analysis team at the design phase would be the group responsible. That's what I was thinking, but used the wrong term.

Here's my problem. Why is it that Apple's stocks are rising just because of Samsung's issues? Why didn't the other competitors stock rise as well?

Because consumers just finished getting burned already by an Android device?

Indeed. Thankfully, nobody displaying schadenfreude about this fiasco is in the business of making phones or batteries. Notably, you'll find Apple's complete lack of comment – let alone snark and derision – about this.

If you believe in karma you'd probably think that systemic theft and corruption are bad karma, too. Assuming that, Samsung's bad luck has been a long time in the making. Their history of misconduct (much of it criminal) is simply staggering: http://www.vanityfair.com/news/business/2014/06/apple-samsung-smartphone-patent-war

Isn't that a little pot calling kettle black ?
Not to take away much from the "great" Steve Jobs, hey I'm a fan, but he stole plenty of ideas from others.
So did Bill Gates (anyone remember Gary Kildall?), so did just about any great innovator. It's like "who invented the light bulb" ?

In Apple's case of the iPhone, if you outsource manufacturing to lower-cost countries, you shouldn't be surprised if creative engineers in those places are inspired in the same way.

Seeing the current trend towards nationalist thinking in a number of countries, I wouldn't be surprised if a trade war starts with Jina.

Nice bait thread title. Couldn't leave it at Apple's finances, had to throw Samsung's name in there. How many added clicks did that net you?

In a month where Apple's dying Mac lineup was supposed to be revamped, MacRumors has gotten to the bottom of the story... By posting article after article of incremental beta updates as front-page news. Well done.

I guess I'm missing the big picture. I visit websites like this because Apple products interest me. But all I get from this site now are shareholder results and software developer ads. Thanks.

Been going this way to a while I'm afraid. The separate articles for each products beta each time there's a new release is just embarrassing, as are the separately posted "guides" for minor features each time there's a product or is update (not saying they aren't useful for some, but artificially splitting them and posting all to the front page...)

I've checked the way back machine archive back to a few stages when I used to lurk here in the early days, and even years after the iPhone landed. The difference is staggering.

It'll be really interesting to see how this plays out. I wonder if Google will come in and take the #1 Android phone spot, or whether Samsung will hang in their thanks to the Galaxy S7/edge.

Problem with these devices is the OS sucks. Who wants an OS that gets updated once a year and most people won't even see that OS update for another few months. For example you buy S7 from Tmobile, it doesn't come with the latest Android OS and all you get is occasional Android so called security updates. It will be months before you get the current Android OS on your device which doesn't appear to be anything special anyway buncha Google outsourced junk. Until they change this update model (carriers and manufactures) I don't see how any Android device can compete with Apple on an OS level. Also Google needs to spend the money on US Developers and not outsource it to what I call 99 cent programmers.

Well... if you're like me (and I know I am), the way I sense it is we're all celebrating justice & the karma smack-down deserved Samsung with its rank corporate values & slavish rip-off of Apple for almost a decade.

But agreed. I suppose markets are a bit like batteries, its negative side dependent on the positive side...

...but it's just sooo sweet finally seeing the negative side just melt-down & explode...

heh heh... (...better luck next year Samsung)
Maybe it's just me not paying attention to it. But from a casual standpoint I've seen everyone making fun of each other. I mean, remember those Mac vs PC adverts?

But my favourite part is where you attempted to sound mature and understanding, but then decided to run the other way.

If that were true, then Apple could never have released the original iPhone. Android phones came afterwards, not before.
Haha, what? It is true. Sure there are exceptions. There's always the one device/platform/etc that starts it all. And besides Apple are known to not exactly be inventors, but innovators of existing tech.

Even the iPhone was very similar to Nintendo tech (they were the ones to re-invent motion and touchscreen tech, they had huge success with the Wii and DS... and then the iPhone appears).

It really does seem like the perfect storm for the google phone to have a chance.
Good point... a little too perfect, a little too much chance, if you ask me...

Consider the timing: Last year, Google's "Do No Evil" was replaced by Alphabet's "Do the Right Thing". This year, they release the Pixel... only now, the Note7 is blocking their way.

What if, embedded in Nougat 7.0, is code that allows Larry Page using his Pixel, to remotely crank up all 8 cores simultaneously on any Note7 world-wide, until the targetted Note7 overheats & explodes into a fireball of mayhem, destruction & carnage...

...permitting Larry, by Alphabet Standards... to have done the right thing... for his Pixel...

You do the math...

Many thought that was the end of the 737, but the problem was eventually found and fixed, passengers forgot about the crashes, and it's gone on to become the best-selling commercial jetliner ever.

De Havilland (one of the pioneers of commercial jet airline travel) didn't fare so well, they went right out of business following the Comet issues. By the time they fixed what was wrong with the Comet nobody wanted a de Havilland anymore.

Except that people are smart enough to realize that the Tylenol problem was not theirs and did not try to push a solution that should fix the problem only to cause the problem again. Samsung took their best guess and went with the battery being the issue. It wasn't and they sent phones they labeled safe to people that weren't safe.

This caused an issue on a plane, thankfully not major and multiple people including a 13 year old with burns. So no, they did not do the right thing because they sent phones deemed safe that weren't to customers AFTER the original issues were reported.

Actually, that is far from what happened and how people reacted. Try a little research.
There is a big perceptive difference between a burn, even a potential bad burn and death by poison disguised a trusted OTC med.

Haha at least it was comical. I had a mental image of this playing out.

False. It takes the Note7 losing Samsung 19 billion, for them to admit with broken hearts, that they only regret... losing money...

:(

Oh yeah I forgot they actually said that. Like the people carrying around fire hazards next to their face/legs/whatever were supposed to feel sorry for them

Woot! Just wish Google wasn't coincidentally launching their own phone to take up the slack otherwise android would be dead in the water, which it entirely deserves. Now let's hope their bad luck continues with the Supreme Court case this week.

You want Android to die so your favorite brand has no competition and then they really won't have a need nor desire to innovate and charge even higher prices. Did some goose wack you over the head?
