The problem is, consumers never forget these things. When note users begin seeing their phones blow up and are being forced to return them, it only adds more pain to the already large wound samsung created. I use to build heaps of PC's for family and friends, and one build in particular cost me a lot of money out of my own pocket, more specifically, a company named AsRock. Used one of their motherboards for a friends build which i recommended, turned out the board caused all these problems and took out the RAM with it as well. Spoke to AsRock and they made the process 10x harder than it should've been. Ended up costing me $400 AUD from my pocket, more than the motherboard its self. Moral of the story, i don't use them anymore for anything. If i had a note 7, i wouldnt use samsung ever again either. Its called brand loyalty. When that loyalty diminishes, you move on and never recommend it again. This will hurt samsung and its going to be a painful ride winning back the android fans.

While I agree... the comment wasn't about profit.

It was about being the #1 smartphone OEM by volume.

In any business, market share is the means. But never forget that profit is the end goal.

What's the point in being able to ship tons of cheap smartphones from a company's perspective if there isn't any money to be made this way?

Again... I agree with what you're saying.

But this whole sub-topic was based on a miscommunication made in an earlier comment.

He clarified what he was talking about in post #22.

All is good!

It's click-bait revenue for MR. It's standard operating procedure here. No one is forcing you to read articles on this website.
I think I made it pretty clear that if they can't post rumors about Macs that's exactly what'll happen.

And I have a feeling it aint just me who feels this way.

Damn the note 7 looks great on that picture. (black)

Give it 20 minutes and it won't :D

I would say they are doing the right thing if they scrape the Note 7 entirely and start anew. I would applaud their courage (pun unintended) and that's the right thing to do. Too much damage has been done. It's time to cut losses once and for all before somebody gets killed or their brand gets hurt even more.

Samsung rushed the Note 7 in order to try and beat Apple, it's the age old Hare and tortoise, Apple have taken their time with devices where Samsung's policy seems to be throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. What makes this worse is that Samsung took digs at Apple at the Note 7 event, and now they are the ones with the problem, a very big problem. Embarrassing to say the least.

Nice bait thread title. Couldn't leave it at Apple's finances, had to throw Samsung's name in there. How many added clicks did that net you?

In a month where Apple's dying Mac lineup was supposed to be revamped, MacRumors has gotten to the bottom of the story... By posting article after article of incremental beta updates as front-page news. Well done.

I guess I'm missing the big picture. I visit websites like this because Apple products interest me. But all I get from this site now are shareholder results and software developer ads. Thanks.

The fact that Samsung's phone is being scrapped at a time when people were saying the latest Apple phone wouldn't sell is something to consider. I do think Apple has made more money and this would help push their stock up so it is valid to look at it in this way. Let's face it this happened at a very opportune time for Apple.

What Apple news do you want to read? As you said the Mac line up has nothing to talk about lately. There was plenty of coverage of the new iPhone line up. The news published on this site recently is no different than in past years. When a product gets launched there will be a flurry of threads. When there is nothing to report we get reports like these. What do you expect? Please, tell me all of the Apple news you want to hear about that is being pushed off the front page because Samsung has a phone that flopped? It is pretty slim pickings now until the Macs get released.

I can hardly see Samsung recovering from this anytime soon. I work with phones and already have customers waiting for the S8 & S8 Edge. Some are even considering the Pixel phone now over the Note.

Apple really need to bulk up supply of the 7 Plus to capitalize on this.

The best thing Samsung can do is stop production and figure out what the issue is so they can fix it. This isn't something they can rush to fix or just brush over. It is already going to hurt their reputation and if they are dumb enough to find another quick fix and have something similar happen again it has the potential to run them out of the market. I don't care how loyal people are to a brand, when things are catching on fire and causing damage or injury, you will eventually jump ship instead of risking it.

From Note 7, I have gone to Pixel and my husband remains undecided between an Edge or staying with his 6S Plus. A friend remains undecided.

iPhone is not an option for either my husband or our friend because AT&T says they can't replace their Note 7's with iPhone 7 Pluses until last week of December or possibly not until the new year.

~~TL,DR part:

I could have gone with an iPhone 7 and very nearly did. But I use the headphone jack enough that its removal is a significant annoyance. I also want a phone that records stereo audio for videos, which Samsung flagship phones do, and a Google rep told me Pixel does, but iPhone does not. If I regret the Pixel choice, I still have my SE which is more than sufficient for most of my needs. The Note 7 was a fun media consumption device and photo and video recorder and pocket computer.

What I would miss most in parting with the Note 7 is the Samsung camera. Next would be the display, and finally, the irreplaceable S Pen functionality. Oh and of course the sound quality for my videos. iPhone records in monoaural sound which sounds flat compared to the richer stereo sound of a Note7 recording. I did not go back with Samsung because my S7 loaner had run very hot and was clearly defective in that respect. I don't like defects that burn my skin.

We can say that Samsung was a shameless copier and they were, but with the recent Galaxy phones they did surpass Apple in many respects. But to say they have QC issues is an understatement.

Sadly, looking around at issues that plague the iPhone 7 release, Apple seems to be having a wonky 2016, as well, in that respect. Hopefully Apple's QC issues remain confined to problems that do not risk consumer safety. Fortunately, the phones that are free of defects are indeed very nice. Let's hope the Plus returns to wide availability soon.

For most people that would potentially switch I think it just comes down to wanting the phone here and now. This is understandable if you have no other phone to use for the time being, but for someone who does have a phone as a backup, it shouldn't be a deal breaker. I'm sure the cell providers aren't helping with their ridiculous estimates of when someone could have the 7 plus, but I know my friend just ordered two 7 Pluses and they are both being delivered within about 18 days of ordering. So how this leads to any cell company telling someone it will take 2 or more months, I have no clue.

Schadenfreude is bad karma. You haters should hope that Samsung SDI (the battery manufacturer in question) did not produce exploding Li-Ion batteries for Apple's iPhone. They're on Apple's supplier list.

You're right that schadenfreunde is bad Karma, but:

1) these are not haters: these are people who were subjects of constant hate and mockery from Samsung itself (ads on Apple lines, bending phones, etc) and their fans.

2) batteries were not the problem here. Samsung hoped they were, but they where not.

I agree, I was about to buy iPhone 7 plus 256 black, it is out of stock and no one knowns when it is going to arrive. Meanwhile, I am seeing Pixel XL for a reasonable bargain (not cheap though) with QHD screen going to appear on line on 13th...Most likely I may have to choose between what is available on that day.

It'll be really interesting to see how this plays out. I wonder if Google will come in and take the #1 Android phone spot, or whether Samsung will hang in their thanks to the Galaxy S7/edge.

Those pixels are god aweful ugly. If no Samsung then its back to iPhone

I don't think it's batteries' problem but their placement and connections in phone's body, i.e. failed design
