I liked it and I think what is most important is that, if you watch it in the keynote, you'll hear the audience laughing. Though these keynotes are press releases and go out to the world at large, Apple didn't cater to the wide world with this opening. They kept their focus on making something special for their conference members (developers). Which is the primary reason I'm mystified by those here who are calling it an epic failure.
It didn't need to be brilliantly funny, funny to the whole world...or even to you. It was a warm joke between Apple and the developers and it succeeded in getting warm laughs. That's all it was intended/needed to do: start the conference off with a smile. Which, to my mind, it did. Hence, I'd name it a success.
