The benifit is minimal but the cost is zero. Why not turn it on?
If you live in an area of the US that still depends on coal (26 states by the way, so the majority) for it's livelihood and you've seen many of your friends and family lose their source of income because of mining downturns, that would be a reason to turn this off, and no there aren't any other viable jobs that pay at the same rates and none were provided when the coal jobs were stopped. You can go ahead and downvote I won't be looking at this for replies, quotes, etc.

"When enabled, Clean Energy Charging allows the iPhone to get a forecast of carbon emissions in the nearby energy grid, using that to charge the iPhone during times of cleaner energy production."

It is letting the Machines know who has unplugged from the Matrix.
😂 Nice one! This one just went over my head, hahahah! We need a poll if people will be using this feature or not.

I'll be keeping it off. I only charge my iphone when it's under 10%, usually around 5% or less, when I really need a charge. I think this feature is more geared towards people who like to keep their iPhone on the charger all the time.

Also, when you turn off this feature it does not state anything about charging the battery life.

It takes more energy to build the phone, and especially mine for the lithium used in the battery, than it ever will to keep it charged for the lifetime of the device. That's a rounding error. But it gives Apple and excuse to drain even more diagnostic and telemetry data from you.

Maybe this feature is strictly useful for Apple Retail Stores because they have the phones plugged in at all times. 🤨

Hrmm, neat concept but a bit useless as people will want a charge to be reliable. It's especially useless if someone is already on a 100% green supplier.

More interesting to me would be cost-based charging. I get super cheap electricity overnight (11:30pm-5:30am) so just allowing me to input those times and have it do the bulk of it's nightly charge then would be significantly more useful - especially with a house full of iOS devices. My car can do that already!

Maybe Apple doesn’t want us charging our iPhones to 100% anymore. I’m still lost and confused. I wish, Craig Federighini would explain and elaborate further. That's it.....

I'm going to email Craig right now and ask him about Clean Energy Charging. See what he has to say and if he is leaving it on or off.

thank you for this article MR.

And secondly, I believe this charging thing has a direct impact on their Green initiative goals. Read Alllllllllll about it here:

Lots and lots of info. Have fun. (But be bored, before going into it, haha.)

“Clean Energy Charging works together with Optimized Battery Charging to learn your charging habits.

Clean Energy Charging engages only where you spend the most time and regularly charge your iPhone for long periods of time, such as your home and place of work. The feature doesn't engage if your charging habits are variable or you're in a new location, such as when you travel. Because of this and to get the carbon-emission forecast for your area, some location settings must be turned on for Clean Energy Charging to activate.

Your iPhone doesn't send any of the location information that it uses for this feature to Apple.”

This is a solution searching for a problem. Of all the energy guzzling devices and appliances, charging a phone consumes a mouse fart's worth of electricity. Optimized battery charging already takes that into account for most people that have a normal nightly sleep patterns, where electricity demands are lowest.

And how could it be clean energy charging if your local grid is powered by fossil fuels?

A dumb feature. Just like stage manager on macOS.
I’ll definitely turn it off. And I want it to KEEP OFF.

Megacorps love to introduce these inconsequential features trying to offset their emission and pollution onto end user, when in reality, their activity emits way more stuff and damage environment more. If this feature is not considered green wash, idk what else would be.
