When you're looking back at your photos in years to come you'll get it.

  • Assuming that Live Photos support doesn't die off
  • Assuming that I'm still on iOS
  • Assuming Apple allows sharing Live Photo format and others (read Android and Windows) can play them.
Then again, I seldom go back to look at past videos. Photo's I may go back and look at that special shot however I am more likely to print and frame. So unless a Harry Potter-esk picture frame comes along ...

Not holding my breath

Too bad the ability to share outside the circle of 6S* users is so limited.
For me that is precisely why I consider Live a total letdown.

As far as I understand, there are plenty of devices that can "view" these live photos. You just don't do it via a 3D touch. I sent a couple to my wife's 5s, and she could view them just fine. She even had a little icon on the photo to show it was a live photo.

Your old DVD player won't play Blu-Ray discs. I don't know you your marriage survives.

Ha ha. yes. but my bluray player will play dvds. Do you see the analogy there? DVDs lasted decades. And still playable universally. But LivePhotos are universally obsolete right out the box. Today. By the way the missus overlooked this and was distracted by the Force Touch feature .... for now ;)

My wife's 5S doesn't.
The Android and MS devices we have show it either as a static photo of mediocre quality or as a short video (which is what it is in reality).

They're created as little video files that are tied to the corresponding photo in iOS so you'll always be able to view them no matter what platform.

Takes away storage, but I get your point lol

Sure, some people find that the cost of more storage outweighs the benefits of Live Photos and choose to disable to the feature. Still, they're not worse off. They're better off because they have the option to reactivate Live Photos in the future if they choose to, rather than having no option at all.

True, but at the rate most people upgrade their iPhones, I think that will change fairly quickly ... and the beauty of Live Photos is that it's still a photo to everyone else.

Thats actually a really good point. When you think about it, why would the person be taking a picture in this situation rather than a video? most logical scenario would be to capture a video of a shot like that, not a picture.

Except for when you are doing a commercial for Apple and trying to promote live photos

That guy is a true to life, honest to god, baby faced assassin. He is a .50 cal head shot from a mile away. Curry is an offensive masochist who loves to put defenders in pain. Unfortunately, he's western conference so I'm pretty sure he clubs baby seals in the off season.

On topic. Ad was okay. More importantly, I hate Curry. He is soooooo damn good.

Haha, well done. Thanks for that very entertaining description. Now I won't soon forget who he is.

Unexpected....like a half-court basketball shot?

Aside from Steph Curry, who clearly has sold his soul to the Devil, the success rate of half court shots is about 1%, so yeah, unexpected. Riveting to non-basketball fans, maybe not so much.

Erm, to see how a live photo properly works, do I need to have a 6S phone? On my 6 plus it just looks crap. I tried watching on my mac mini but also didn't see any difference.

The success of the shot might be unexpected, but who would want to document that with a short "video" instead of an actual video? I think maybe the problem isn't so much with Live Photos themselves but rather that Apple isn't doing a very good job of showing the benefit of it. Either Apple has a room full of really dumb people who came up with a terrible example of the benefit of Live Photos or they have a room full of really smart people who can't come up with a good example.

How do you control what part of the action the live photo captures?
Say in this basketball example, if the guy with the iPhone pressed FIRE half a second earlier, then would he simply have missed the ball going into the net?
So if you wish to capture an event, such as this advert shows, you would have to perhaps try and try and try again, to get the second or two's video to show exactly the thing you wished to capture?
Or does it take a longer section and you can select the portion you wish to save as the Live Photo ?

So you're saying that Blu-Ray is obsolete right out of the box?

Or have you traveled to the future and seen an iPhone 7 that doesn't support LivePhotos?

Getting a little tired of all the commercials about the iPhone's camera...
Ok, not really "a little tired"... I'm SICK and tired of the commercials.

Basically, you just have to get lucky. I tend to focus my image capture on what makes a good picture, and then hope for the best for the live portion.

Ahhh, I was afraid that might be the case :(
So, is there any option to, as it were create a live picture?
If it's something important, can you shoot say 10 seconds of video, then select a 2 second (or whatever it is) portion and create a live picture from that?
That would allow much more scope and safety for a 1off event.

No, features like that aren't there yet. Sounds like some neat enhancements though.

This ad is the perfect example of a situation where a 4K or 1080p at 60fps video would be a much better choice than Live Photos. I don't think Apple could have picked a better one.

^ Doesn't understand Live Photos.

I understand them perfectly. This guy took a photo in the middle of the shot where nothing interesting happens. The ball isn't just touching the hoop, the ball isn't even in frame. Then you have this low resolution, low-frame video for 1.5 seconds before and after that lousy photo where nothing of interest was in frame.

Video would have made much more sense for this situation.

Update: Tonight is opening night in the NBA. Curry celebrated his MVP and NBA Championship trophy by dropping 24 on N'awlins... in the 1st quarter. The freaking 1st quarter! I.Hate.Curry.And.He's.So.Damn.Good.

I won't bug you with basketball anymore after this. Why couldn't he be a crappy person so disliking him would be justified, and not completely irrational? Good son. Good dad. Good husband. Good dude. Arrrgggh. I bet he really does club baby seals though.

I've been on several trips now since getting a 6S and have not once used Live photos. Don't think I will either. Espically if I can record something in 4k.

Seems rather pointless.
