Not to get cynical immediately, but two questions
1. Was this ad shot completely on an iphone 12? (be cool if it was but doubtful)
2. If you've got a buget for mics, light rigs, miniatures, horses, do yourself a favor and pick up a used EOS or A7iii, even a gopro for under $1k.

I mean, I get the ad, gonna get some peeps into filmmaking but still...
1) yes
2) I have all of the above(mostly). I still prefer shooting on my iphone.

Shame that they don’t actually play in Dolby Vision when using AirPlay to my 2020 LG CX OLED. Don’t see how I’m meant to watch them
appleTV, roku? I'm sure you can find an answer out there. Maybe LG even gives you an update. Oh, I just realized how funny that was

It's nice that they can do all these things 🚀. I'm no videographer, but I guess if I were to shoot a commercial for a client I wouldn't go for the iPhone setup. I think this might be for videographers that got bored with big cameras and want to try something new. Like those photographer that still shoot in film, compared to digitally 😅

Was the ad itself shoot with the 12 pro? My guess is not which render this ad in the super bs category.
lighten up and enjoy a bit. That was a cute video. It doesn't say it was shot on an iPhone, but a lot of them are, so it might be, but it is still a cute video nonetheless

An iPhone is superior to a GoPro IMO
They're in very different worlds. The GoPro can shoot 5k @ 30 fps, has 20 MP stills, and includes a variety of other nifty features that are great for action videography. Also, it's $400 so it's substantially cheaper to fit multiple cameras to something like a single vehicle.

That said, it is impressive that we are even considering comparing the iPhone to a GoPro. The iPhone has come a LONG way and within a generator or two may very well take over as the action cam of choice. The conundrum will exist for people who have a ~$1200 budget:

Do they buy an iPhone 12 + GoPro, or an iPhone 12 Pro (presumably with maxed out storage since you can't expand it like you can with the GoPro)? And do they feel comfortable risking their everyday do-it-all phone on an action shot? Or do they move that risk to a much cheaper $400 device that performs really well?

Probably capture & edit some amazing footage of people fighting for survival in the post-apocalyptic world.
and backtap is great, lets you go right to recording video so you can record those people doing bad things

Have you seen the title?
Clearly you haven't read the article, or are aware of current reality. Major directors/cinematographers like Steven Soderbergh exclusively film Hollywood features on iPhones -- but do not edit on them...

This is like the GoPro commercials where everyone is jumping off mountains and doing backflips on their BMXs with $10k worth of gear from REI, when in reality the vast majority of their cameras are sold to buyers who have watched so many episodes of the Masked Singer they've left an imprint in their sofas.
How far sunk in are you on your sofa?

To me, these ads just tell that how much cinema is about effort and talent, not about camera itself.
And yet they are selling a camera (=phone’s camera) because of it.
Props to the ad agency.

I didn't see dolbyvision on the GoPro. https://gopro.com/en/us/shop/hero9-black/tech-specs?pid=CHDHX-901-master

Maybe I missed something.

Apple today shared a new ad that's meant to highlight the Dolby Vision HDR video capture, editing, and playback available on the new iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.

The video features a series of people using their iPhone 12 Pro devices to capture video content with a variety of camera rigs and equipment to simulate different angles while getting creative, movie-like video shots. "The only camera to shoot in Dolby Vision," reads the video's tagline.

Both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max support Dolby Vision HDR video recording at up to 60 frames per second, while the iPhone 12 and 12 mini support the feature at up to 30 frames per second.

it makes me feel like getting creative and making a real film! So much fun.

I haven’t been keeping up with the technology but I’m supposing they are saying that the quality is good.

I was pretty sure I had seen this photo from before.

Maybe you have taken only one good photo who knows

I've got a few. Why do you care so much?

I liked the video. I have never edited 4K video on a phone. Not sure I would want to, unless that is all I had. Sounds rather laborious.
Edit with Final Cut Pro, but yah having this dolbyvision seems to me like real easy low budget shooting.

Of course it was shot on the 12 pro. If it wasn't, it would leak, and Apple would be laughed out of town. Besides, you can see many many videos that Apple puts out labeled with Shot on iPhone. Now sure, lots of expensive accessories and lighting and editing are used, but the camera itself is quite capable considering.

Anyone else with an iPhone 12 / 12 Pro having issues with uploading videos on Instagram or YouTube appearing massively overexposed?

it would appear that most apps don’t support Dolby HDR yet
Sort of.
I imported iphone 12 HDR footage into FCPX and it was horrifically, unusably, unsalvageably blown-out (even when supposedly converted with the HDR Tools effect). The problem was, I had pulled the file straight off my phone using Image Capture, and I was not using a Library that was not set up in Wide Gamut HDR.

What I did to fix this was to let the videos upload to iCloud, download to Photos, and then exported them from Photos into my SDR FCPX library. Photos' exporting process automatically converted the HDR to SDR, just like exporting an HEIC photo will give you a JPEG.
