I'm glad to see Netflix going gangbusters capitalizing on that. & to a lesser extent, even Amazon.
...while apple tries propping up the old model for some reason. & sits on their hands...?

:/

You are right. Netflix has been winning at giving us the same content networks and cable companies are nickel and diming each other and consumers over for years.

If it wasn't for Netflix I wouldn't even know certain shows existed. The way they know how to recommend shows to you. And their UI makes it so easy. Unlike my clunky, power hungry cable box.

Colour me critical, but I found this bland.

Perchance, some will like it.

I liked it. Then I scrolled down further and saw "streaming television service on hold" and no longer did... My initial assumption was just a build up to a launch of this "future". Alas, disappointment.

Bit more internationalism might be good. All ATV seems to show here is how goid it is potentially for US users only.

Pity.

Pretty average I'd say. Not offensively bad as some of the Apple Watch commercials with people walking around in front of colored backgrounds. So... Maybe we're going uphill?

Hey, optimism is good, people!

Nice commercial... simple, no spoken words, no blaring music trying to catch your attention, apple logo at the end. Well done... interestingly it doesn't even show the AppleTV box.

But the white text on bright colours, and poor character placement at the bar edges... ugh!

Maybe the Apple that cared about such small details is behind us now?

So...

old Apple TV did netflix, hulu etc

new Apple TV does netflix, hulu etc

what exactly is the future of tv?

am I missing something? It seems this ad is empty without that 'web cable streaming' component that Apple failed to negotiate with CBS.

The future of the way we consume content is through apps. More and more we watch tv on our time instead of when it's scheduled.

I love, love, LOVE my new Apple TV. I hate, hate, HATE when their commercials feature sports apps:

MLB.tv - Blacked out local games
NBA - Blacked out local games
NFL - NO live games, but you can watch games the next day AFTER YOU ALREADY KNOW THE OUTCOME.

Beyond that I wish the content providers would get hip to the idea that we are willing to pay for the content.

HBO Now - $15/month -> Subbed
Showtime - $10/month -> Subbed

- Any content that requires me to login using the cable account i don't have -> Not even installed.

I'm not willing to give my cable provider $130/month for the 1 or 2 channels that I watch, just to receive 100+ channels I don't.

DVR has existed for more than a decade and I've been consuming content on my time. Nothing new here. Apps have existed on roku, amazon fire, etc, what exactly is different on apple tv? Do you see this future campaign doesn't have much weight if any without that streaming content deal with CBS that Apple couldn't secure?

In fact actually having Apps on Apple TV is worse than DVR, because even though you can access on demand content, many times they'll force ads on you. Whereas with DVR you can skip through ads.

It's not the future, it's the past, a time when you were forced to watch ads ;)

I feel like reading Apple's description of the ATV4, they are describing a product on how it should be, or how they want people to view it, but not as it actually is.

Calling the ATV4 the future, or revolutionary, and after using it, I feel like I am missing something.

It is almost like these commericals were design as if the rumored Apple TV service is current on them, but it isn't.

Uhm, that is clearly deliberate since they had to deliberately offset the logo slightly from the centre to make it line up. It's like that on their billboards as well.

The future of TV can't be all that good, considering they just "hit the pause button" on their streaming plans (i.e. Can't convince the cable companies to be less greedy).

Until consumers can choose an a la carte system of programming, and until there is more competition, the future of tv is going to continue to suck, and suck expensively.

They changed the model that they're pursuing. Instead of a $35 plan, they're allowing individual content providers to sell their content through the App Store system. Want CBS All Access? There's an app for that. Want HBO? Subscribe to their content through their app. You will be able to choose a la carte. Instead of channels, you get apps.

So, it's like Roku, except several years late? The question is, who is Apple exactly trying to fool, there is nothing new or futuristic about Apple TV. It's like what they tried to do with Apple Music calling it "revolutionary"

Every time I see "ATV", even when I'm on MacRumors, I automatically think of an ATV-quad. I guess I'm not brainwashed enough yet. ;):D

Kidding...hehe.
