Ahead of its grand opening later this week on June 24, Apple today shared photos of its upcoming "Apple Tower Theatre" retail store in Los Angeles.

The store will reside in the historic Tower Theatre originally designed in the heart of Los Angeles in 1927. Apple has collaborated with the local community, leading preservationists, and artists to "thoughtfully preserve and restore the theater’s beauty and grandeur."

Apple's senior vice president of retail, Deirdre O’Brien, says that this new store "honors the rich history and legacy of this entertainment capital" and that it builds on Apple's special relationship with the people of Los Angeles. The store will mark the 26th Apple Store in the greater Los Angeles area and employ 100 retail team members. Photos of the upcoming store can be seen on Apple's press release.

I'm about 3 hours away from there. Going to put on my bucket list. LOL!
You’re telling me. I’m a bit of a musical theatre buff, and the history and architecture of old school venues are a heavy interest of mine. Other than the occasional trip to Universal Studios I don’t have much reason to go up to LA but this will definitely be a must see the next time I’m up there. Looks incredible.

Beautiful, except for the fact that it's in downtown.
Downtown may still be rough around the edges (to say the least), but east of downtown, the rejuvenated "Arts District" is nothing less than amazing. What was no-mans-land a few years ago is now a thriving, booming neighborhood, with brand new housing, shops and restaurants. All it takes is a spark and some money and neighborhoods can change.

The west side of Manhattan went from "Hell's Kitchen" to "Chelsea" in a matter of a few years. I grew up in New York and remember when 42nd Street was too seedy to drive down, let alone walk. Investment by Disney, among others, changed all that. Disney did something similar in Hollywood when they restored the historic El Capitan theatre. Here's hoping Apple's investment in downtown LA is equally transformative.

What an immense waste for a gadget store.
I look at it as a way for Apple, a very successful company, to give back something to the community. They didn't have to restore this site. They could have taken over some other old building, gutted it, and put in a regular store for far less of an investment. Maybe this will be a kind of anchor to incentivize other retailers and restaurants to open nearby and revitalize that area.

Go to the address in Apple Maps and use Look Around to see the before pictures. Interesting to see the difference.
802 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90014

The San Francisco Apple store is really nice. The huge windows and cantilevered second floor are really cool.

I also like the Apple store at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. Normally you don't have access to it, but sometimes they open the meeting room in the back. Awesome large windows with a fantastic view out to the ocean.

It looks stunning, but the live music lover inside of me wishes the building kept open and renovated as a music hall.

Edit: My bad, I thought it was originally a music theater, not for movies.
If Apple didn't renovate it, it would either stay as a storefront as a swap meet or if it got sold to someone else, it wouldn't keep this historical look. And that area has a lot of old theaters that can be still be preserved as a theater, but no one else is coming to save them.

The black wall paneel with the Apple logo in it looks so stupid in this room... design fail level 9000

I can't help but think of the Sears Tower.

If Apple ever fails (and I really hope that they don't, but I'm also realistic about the long-term trajectory of any corporation), this is the kind of stuff that might be featured in the postmortem. Seems like quite the extravagance, and it will have questionable resale value unless the whole area is gentrified.

Then again, what else are they supposed to do with the billions of cash? Plant trees? Done. Spend billions on TV/Movie production? Done. Finance new computer chip plants? Done. And something tells me that they might be getting some very favorable tax treatments as an inducement to continue doing more of these.
