Nothing untoward here. Apple is just assisting people do what they would do anyway. Win-win.

(this is payback for using the edu discount for the last twenty years, thanks :) )

At my work, many of our managers also want a MacBook Pro... but then they usually ask the internal IT department to install Windows 11 on it! (no joke!) 😂

I'm having flashbacks to the ads for Performas back in the 1990s. And it's not a good memory at all.

I did find this amusing. It seems like I am in the minority. But Apple, it should be you delivering this message to parents, not coaching kids on what to tell their parents on your behalf. If you’ve got such a good case for why your product is worth the (big) investment, make that case yourself.

I had a macbook since middle school. In 6th grade (this was mid 2000s) they supplied everyone with a macbook. I was surprised they did do that, as it was a public school, but was always grateful. Does anyone remember what the starting price would have been for a 2007 macbook back in the day?

I loved this. It was whimsical and tongue in cheek. The kind of thing Apple used to do all the time. And they even provided the presentation in three formats! When was the last time Apple provided Google Slides of anything?! The presentation itself reminds me of when I was 16 and wrote a list for my parents of all the things I promised I would do if they got me a car.

The Keynote itself is well crafted and includes explanatory slides for how you can customize the presentation for your major, with example slides in an appendix for several different majors. Someone put a lot of thought and care into making this.

Well done, marketing team!

Mactracker says the mid 2007 revision MacBook started at $1099 (US).

Ugh - Apple.

I downloaded the presentation and the whole thing feels not just uncool but, worse, un-Apple. It's clearly meant to be cheeky and fun, but this isn’t Apple’s usual game. Whereas past campaigns like "Think Different," "iPod silhouettes" or even "Get a Mac" were effortlessly cool, this one is all effort. It tries to be meta and relatable but ends up undermining the brand’s minimal, more importantly, aspirational vibe.

I'm going to file this alongside Image Playground and free U2 albums as a mis-step.

Stop. Just stop. And tell your ad agency to change directions - they are actively harming your brand image.

The recent creative coming out of Apple lacks, well, creativity. This is another ideas straight out of a committee.

Their parents are most likely Gen X. We grew up using Macs or PC's, so the bias is ingrained. Some bad PowerPoint isn't going to change our minds.

If my daughter wants to use a Mac for college, all she has to do is ask. I'm very pro Mac.🤗 If she shows me this PowerPoint, I might change my mind.😑 College kids, don't show your parents this slide show, especially if they're already pro Mac.

Wow, that's embarrassing.
Dear children: come up with something yourselves. Preferably with arguments.

This presentation is worse than ALL the preconceptions one could have about Americans.

  • Treating your own parents like customers – Check
  • Comparing a computer to pizza - Check
  • Considering a computer durable because it is made of aluminum - Check
  • List advantages and "forget" that these also apply to other computers - Check
  • Have such poor facts that a third of the presentation deals with the alleged health benefits of spending more time outdoors thanks to Macs – Check
  • Find any individual cases along the lines of "They used that too, so it must be good" – Check
  • Emotionally blackmailing parents - Check
  • Turning the purchase of a Mac into a lifelong memory that must be celebrated in advance - Check

And, of course, make everything as dramatic as possible. Without Mac, you won't make it through college, you'll fail, and your parents will be to blame.
Don't even try to argue with objective facts or present an actual comparison.

Dear children, if you get a Mac thanks to this presentation and want a new one after two years because the new Business Accounting Philosophy Pre-Med Biomedical-Engineering feature is only possible on the latest Mac, don't be surprised if your relationship with Mom and Dad is a little strained.
