I am really curious as to how this works. Do you hear voices that tell you that you are needed?
Nothing so magical or supernatural. Though I admit that might actually sound pretty cool.

I visit a variety of tech forums. Cnet, Engadget, BGR, linustech, theverge, ars technica, reddit, and a smattering of others and I don't hesitate to step in should I feel the situation calls for it.

I don't bother responding on Cnet and Engadget anymore since the place is now a lot more civil when I last left it (I do check back once in a while though).

That's all there is to it.

You don't know what you're missing until you get a bigger phone. You won't want to go back, especially with all that extra battery life.
I actually had the 6plus and 6s plus just because of the battery. The screen size was cool too, but hated the overall size. Now that the regular 7 has as good battery as older plus models I switched back and love it much more. I am disappointed that I dont have dual cameras only slightly, but at least it has OIS.

There will always be trolls regardless of what Apple does. Apple had its share of critics when they announced the iPhone, the iPod, the iPad, the MacBook Air; pretty much everything Apple did was mired in controversy.

What we need is more informed, in-depth and well-reasoned arguments. No more of this knee-jerk "Fire Tim Cook" or smart-ass quips which contribute absolutely nothing to the main discussion at hand.

People need to stop and think through what they want to say first before saying it. There is no prize for being first where this sort of thing is concerned.

That will instantly shave off the majority of the useless posts in these threads, make them more readable and help promote more meaningful discussion.

You can be unhappy with the direction Apple has take and still be respectful and civil about it.

Simply put - I don't really care what these people feel about Apple. They are free to hold their own opinions and think whatever they want about Apple. But when they start crapping all over this forum and start making the atmosphere of this place so much more hostile and toxic, that's when I feel compelled to step in.

I like this place. It has been a steady source of information and productive discussion ever since I fled Cnet and Engadget and the last thing I want to see happen is for Macrumours to devolve into another seething morass of toxicity and hostility. And so I do the only thing I know - I push back against the hatred.

Maybe I am making the problem worse, but I know I can't just sit back and do nothing while I watch this whole place go to crap. I won't.

Cause and effect.

We need doctors because people get ill. We need police because there is crime. I go where I am needed, and post when I am needed.

One cannot exist without the other.

When the acerbic trolling stops, I too will stop. That is my promise to you and this forum.
Perhaps you could think about your posts too, make them shorter. You and many others are actually quite dismissive of other people's grievances.

As for the quips, I actually quite like them, they are a fun way to protest at the direction Apple is taking.

You know, I could not care less about Apple's advertising these days.

It's all this emotional ******** revolving around pictures. Who gives a flying ****? The cameras in the iPhone aren't even that good. Maybe they are if the conditions are perfect, but they rarely are I've lost count how many times some family member has been showing me the pictures they took with their Apple iDevice (usually an iPhone), and it's either under exposed, over exposed, or out of focus. It's sad, because Apple has brainwashed people into thinking their phones are "good enough", when they're not- and quite often, the quality is inferior to that of a $150 digital camera. It's gotten to the point that I am now actively telling people to BRING A REAL CAMERA if they think there's going to be **any** moments worth saving, because the iPhone is probably going to screw it up.

Anyways, I digress.

Where are the ads showing me all the other wonderful things iOS can do? All I ever see these days is photography stuff and other things showing off the stereo speakers on the iPhone 7, which is kinda ironic considering how much of a mess the Music app, iTunes, and Apple Music are at the moment. What happened to the commercials showing me things like people painting stuff, making music, etc? I mean, I still see those, but they're for Microsoft products now..

Believe me - I do try, but I find that it's hard to put across what I want to say and be succinct about it. If I just resort to short 1-liners and retorts, what better am I than the critics and the trolls I am responding to?

The only thing I can do at the moment is to take the care and effort to make my posts as cogent and legible as possible. And I hope that in time, more will do the same as well.

The challenge here is that the effort it takes to refute these inflammatory posts far outweighs the effort it takes to make them, so it's quite the uphill battle. For instance, it takes practically zero effort to post "Tim Cook has to be fired" but a lot of effort to explain why that actually isn't the case.

I am not perfect. I have said some things which in hindsight probably could have been phrased better. All I can say is that at the end of the day, it takes two hands to clap.

At the end of the day, I am just trying to make this forum a better place, the only way I know how to.

Funny, but ultimately meaningless and uninformative.

iPhones are actually quite good. I've used them, starting with the iPhone 4 in several documentary projects. And have also shot with them over long periods of time exclusively, and am using an iPhone 6+ at the moment - an excellent camera.

The strength of a photograph and the power they release to a viewer has very little to do with what camera was used. Rather, it's about the photographer, his/her life experiences, eye, curiosity, imagination, how the photographer relates to people, the ability to compose and decide what context should or shouldn't be in the frame, and on and on.

Wrong. I had a 6+ for 2 years and switched to 7. Don't want to go back to a plus ever again. I can manage with less battery life but won't compromise form factor for it.

Exactly. Too many times, I've tried to be somebody that comes in here and argues and points out why a poster shouldn't be making the Apple hate comments that they do And they have no relevance. When I realized, that it's completely futile and it only turns into a debacle where an argument begins over something so meaningless and ends up no where.

So if I tend to want to get into a debate, I usually try to find a forum member that seems levelheaded and or make solid points that would contribute to a proper/meaningful discussion.

Then realization comes in the play that the best that you can do when you have a troll post or paid troller's or what have you, just use the report button and allow the moderators to take responsibility for those who are the degrading this website.

I tend to get into debates and or arguments at times like everybody else does On here, but I never end up just making some generalized comment without explaining why.

By the way, I consider you to be one of the top three posters who I really appreciate on this website and not also do you post with substance, you create posts that are on par and truthful and believable , which says a lot about an Internet forum where anyone can make claim without reason or evidence.

And I know this is off topic, but needed to be said. Thanks.

if only Apple could stop fragmenting the iPhone and give to both models the same camera options. I don't want to have a bigger phone and yes I do want to have this feature. awesome feature.

so lame IMO

Just another incentive to get people to spend more money. No different than they do with their computers and once upon a time did with their iPods. This isn't an Apple only thing either, it happens all across the technology field and numerous other fields.

Regardless, thank you for your kind words.

I will take your advice to heart. Perhaps not every battle needs to be fought, and not every debate is worth winning.

It's pretty accurate when we are talking about small Greek villages though. Not everywhere is the US when it comes to the prevalence of technology.
Then they should probably focus on Switzerland, where iPhone's market share is 53% (and used to be way higher).

For years I couldn't understand why sales statistics published on macrumors were so distant from reality.. before realizing they only concerned the US.

First, critics and trolls are not the same.
Fanboys also need to think things through just as much as trolls.
This isn’t necessarily a pro Apple blog, but it is certainly Apple centric. The two are different and not mutually exclusive.
Compel yourself to step in as often as you like, your opinion means as much, or as little as anybody else here.
Push back against the hatred? Is that not a little melodramatic?

Most importantly, there are a lot of people on here and other forums that have made significant personal investment in Apple products and who show loyalty only to be ignored/let down/stabbed in the back by Apple. Those people are then ridiculed/dismissed as pointed out by dilbert99, by the Apple fans, (mostly on their own official forum though). This is where things fall down.
If Tim Cook/Jobs were straight with people they’d have less trouble. They stand up and talk crap and lose respect.

They've provided a great camera on the 7. Is it brilliant? No. But it is very, very good. The ad showcases that, end of story.

Out of Apple's more recent adverts this one is definitely much better than previous offerings.

Just wish they'd drop the "practically magic" slogan-it's not working (sorry!)

Anyhow... when the conditions are right Portrait Mode produces some good results:

Very happy to see this. Greece is an extremely photogenic country and I'm glad to see they chose it for the ad.

Shame this was only included on the Plus model.

Some people want a small phone with the current camera technology and software.

There is lots of space to fit this camera in a small model.

The edges of the doggy's back are blurred. The edges probably shouldn't be in my opinion if the effect was working exactly as it should.

I have no issue keeping it in my pocket and I wear skinny jeans.
Keeping it in the pocket is probably ok, i'd be more worried about it bending.
My iPhone 6 - 4.7" is a fine size for 'my' pocket.

Don't take things to heart so much. If someone posts "Tim Cook has to be fired", just ignore it. There is more to life than worrying about things like that.

Also think about how you can spend less time making others spend more time for a comment they post.

Such as, "So what you you think Tim has done to warrant that?", you are at least making the other person do some work.

I'd guess there are two reasons someone posts like that.
  1. They are trolling, nothing you can do to stop this apart from reporting post, but see 2)
  2. They have an actual grievance with Apple and are unhappy at the direction they are taking. (Less ports, Soldering, 16GB ram etc). I don't believe someone posting "Tim Cook has to be fired" is actually trolling because of point 2. That is what I was referring to when looking at anothers point of view.

Τhank you Apple for showing another face of Greece! It's always about us being lazy scums, not paying our debts and trying to get away with everything... Thank you Apple for showing the world that our country is of exceptional beauty, our people are compassionate and loving and that it's not always about money, it's also about the little things in life! You are the best!!!

Leopards ? Spots ?

What a fun commercial - not often I see one that makes me smile and feel happy.

Well done to the creative team behind it. And yes I'm loving the portrait mode on my iPhone 7+. It is good, as are most other features on it. And sorry but my dSLR or Medium Format cameras serve a totally different purpose, the lack of intimidation of subjects and ability to get in and close makes good phone cameras extremely useful.
