I think complaining about vertical video in 2020 just shows your age. I say that as part of the demographic that complains about vertical video. Many apps are built around vertical video now, especially social media (which is one of the most common uses for a camera). For many people, their phone is their primary screen; so why should their video be optimized for a different screen? I hate watching vertical video on a computer monitor too, but it's 2020 and it's here to stay. Some of us are just too old to fully accept it now.

Damned kids, taking portrait video of each other walking across my lawn...

How many selfie sticks held the camera in portrait? If it were a generational thing, then when that generation engineered devices to support their use case, they'd have designed it to capture in portrait. They didn't. Because if they can actually engineer a solution, they prefer landscape.

Every generation thinks whatever silly things their parents think are stupid are a sign their parents don't understand. Bellbottoms used to be cool. Pet rocks were a thing. Doesn't make them anything but a fad. We've been creating moving pictures for what, a century and a half now? If it had inherent benefits, we would have built the devices and displays to capture and present it that way.

Portrait video didn't happen because it's inherently more creative (which is the point I was contending)-- it's an adaptation to the capture devices.

It's easy to watch a video landscape on a phone with one hand. I think the reason we see so much vertical video is because it's harder to hold and control the device with one hand to capture video landscape. People are too lazy to take the finger out of their nose so they can use both hands.

If it were anything but lazy, we'd see more quality content recorded that way. What the video at the top of this thread demonstrates is specifically how unusual it is to do that.

You are LITERALLY thinking inside boxes 😂
So you think the academy award-winning director of this movie knows less than you do? Name your movies so we can check them out!

You replied and then came back to reply to my same post again? Seems I touched a nerve...

I'm sure this Apple ad is going to be up for an Oscar this year for best cinematography. Other nominees in the category of "best vertical video" include:
  • "Man Launching Bottle Rocket from Buttcrack"
  • "Mean Lady at the Grocery Checkout", and
  • "My Dog is Different From Other Dogs"

And yes, rotating a box 90° totally makes it not a box anymore... That's your claim to creativity?

Soon we would had vertical TV in market because rotating our display isn't solution, lol.

On other side, watching those vertical contents might OK on majority smartphone, but for my display and TV it gave me OCD....

They act like vertical video is the newest innovation in the world altogether, and something still very extreme, and only a world leading tech innovation company like Apple can come up with something super new like that 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Cineasts now pivoting their ultrawide screens to vertical...:

Just kidding... no one does that... vertical video sucks... it's simple as that.

PS: Creativity is two-way street... being creative is one thing, actually getting people to watch you stuff is another.
Especially the movie industry knows that anyway... all those "high value" art movies which have zero audience because they fail on delivering the very basic thing we expect... entertainment.

It's very good. Not all of the shots work, but it's great to see film at this level being made thinking outside the box.

Most screens we stare at are being held vertically these days, so this experimentation into cinematography in that format is welcome.

That's a big negative. There is an option on the phone (or your arm/hand) called "screen rotation". Televisions, computers, tablets, phones, all capable of being held in the same orientation...horizontally.

So leave it as an option, if you care for creativity. No options: limited.

Nope. Not limited at all.

Want to make a vertical video? Hold your iPhone vertically. Easy. And apparently a bit mind-blowing for some.

Also mind-blowing: You'll enjoy the benefit of having a much larger and easier to see image on the display as you're making your video.

All videos should be horizontal. I can’t stand vertical videos. That’s all my wife takes is vertical videos and pictures. I tell her all the time to turn her phone to take videos correctly but she never does... Good thing I also take videos and pictures of the kids growing up so someday they don’t have to look at a sliver of a video.

I think they act as if the iphone can be more versatile than people can understand. This was a very entertaining reminder of the versatility wrapped up in first class presentation.

Why do people complain about aspect ratios? It's not the death of TV or Cinema, or sheer lazyiness when it comes to recording.

Take it as it is, a novel film about a stuntman, cleverly put together in my opinion, making the most of the decision to record it vertically.
Kudos where it's due, the people that created this.

I hope this video helps little in the awareness of the Vertical Video Syndrome. Something horrible and dangerous for the art, the communication and the Beuty. A MESSAGE TO THE WHOLE WORLD; PLESAE DONT SHHOT VERTICAL VIDEO: video is not photography, video is always horizontal.

This video es perfect!
Vertical Video Syndrome

I think this post should have been placed in the "politics" section.
The strong emotions this post has evoked are outstanding.
I'm a gen x-er, so I will probably never "like" vertical videos. But my kids are gonna love it.
