How so? Just because it doesn’t do enough for you to make it your only computing device doesn’t mean Apple have “abandoned that idea”. I have many family members who hasn’t had laptops for years and only uses their iPad for work, photos, and consumption. It’s very much possible (and I suspect not uncommon) for a lot of users.

They purged their old “what’s a computer” iPad adverts from YouTube, and the latest keynote showed iOS 15 has no ambition as a full OS, but they spent plenty of time demonstrating iPad as a second screen for Mac.

iPad is a tweener product. Not as good as an $80 Amazon Fire HD10 with YouTube Vanced app for media consumption. iPad Pro is overpriced, too gimped by iPadOS and lacks full desktop browser that $250 Chromebooks have. If I could only take one device when I hit the road I'd take the Surface Pro X. iPad Pro M1 stays home until it gets MacOS.

I have had 4 ipads, first two were built solid 1 is obsolete, other gave to a friend. i'm considering Samsung now, since my ipad air 3 just got the grey screen band barely 2 years 4 months old, now i have to find someone to fix it, out of applecare, for this price, no. best to get something cheaper esp since i just cruize the internet, watch youtube, or watch netflix on it on occasion, great for reading. but for that price if its not going to last not worth it. if my ipad 12.9 goes out, i'm seriously done. Whats worse is alot of folks have had issues with the grey band. Does anyone else know if other vendors have the same problem with their screens?

While the iPad has long been the world's most popular tablet, newly published market research helps put Apple's lead into perspective.

According to estimates shared by research firm IDC, Apple shipped 12.9 million iPads in the second quarter of 2021. By comparison, IDC estimated that Samsung and Amazon shipped a combined 12.3 million tablets in the quarter, suggesting that Apple shipped more tablets than Samsung and Amazon did combined in the quarter.

A big caveat is that Apple no longer reports iPad unit sales in its earnings results, forcing IDC to estimate shipments based off the iPad quarterly revenue number that Apple does share. As a result, other research firms like Strategy Analytics and Canalys have different iPad shipment numbers for the second quarter, but it doesn't change the narrative, as both have Apple with a significant lead over Samsung and Amazon.

iPad sales continued to surge last quarter as many people continue to work, learn, and communicate with others remotely. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the ‌iPad‌ had its best June quarter in nearly a decade, with the company reporting iPad revenue of $7.4 billion in the quarter, a significant increase over $6.6 billion in the year-ago quarter.

The launch of a new iPad Pro with an M1 chip and a mini-LED display on the 12.9-inch model likely also bolstered sales during the quarter.

Apple should thank 3rd party developers for that. What makes Apple great is the immense library of third party apps!

Tablets are very 2013, still can’t find a use for an iPad, not even watching youtube.
I agree with you. My previous iPad was soOoo enemic that I stopped using it once Apple shipped the larger iPhone 7 Max. I ended up giving the iPad away. Last month I decided to buy the 2021 M1 (maxed out) along with the Magic Keyboard, and Apple Pencil 2. While it’s better, it still lacks developer support, and iOS 14.7.1 is finiky. The Magic Keyboard isn’t reliable as the cursor often jumps around like a Mongolian Gerbil on crack. Not sure where culprit is, but it could be the Grammarly Premium App causing the problem.

I also found a number of Apps (partital list) are still not optized for the iPad. BTW, that whole Scribble handwriting to typed text is a complete joke in my opinion.

Despite my less than positive review, there are a few things I like. The ability to download emailed pdf’s to Adobe Acrobat or pdf Expert, sign and return from the email is my favorite feature. YouTube Premium viewing is Okay albeit it doesn’t always match how things‘ are arranged on my Sony Bravia TV A90J YouTube App.

I’m keeping the iPad with hopes that iOS 15 may help with the multitude of bugs. Maybe if Apple can ever figure out how to make iOS for iPad to work better, then perhaps developers will see the value in supporting the platform. For now, I rate the iPad Pro 2021 a 6 out of 10.

No surprise, there's really no comparison in the tablet market.

As a side, I have been playing around with my buddy's M1 iPad Pro 12.9, and nice as the screen is, it's definitely not worth the upgrade from the 2018, at least not for my purposes. The only thing holding the 2018 back is the 4GB of RAM which I don't really have many issues with for the most part.

Another quarter... another round of these:

"Apple sells more tablets than anyone else..."

"I still don't understand what tablets are for..."

:p

iPad shipments used to be higher than ALL OTHER tablets combined, now only higher than selected few combined. iPad market share has been shrinking year by year (e.g. 32.1% in 2020, 31.9% in 2021).

From what I’ve used Android tablets, especially the recent ones made by Samsung, are decent. it’s the Android tablet apps that are not good.
So you have more usage with the tablets than running the apps on them? Let me guess, to crush the flies?

The iPad is the product that apple

Couldn't agree more. Every time I demo a tablet other than an iPad, I am amazed how clunky and awful they are ... still.
I'm surprised by this. I thought the major hurdle for Android tablet is it just doesn't have an ecosystem of apps for tablet like iPad does.

That's funny, I didn't know Samsung shipped iPads!
An samsung does not, in fact no one but appke ships iPads, since anyone did Apple would sue them in a second for trademark violations, they do however ship a lot of tablets ( running mistly android I guess) as the tittle correctly stated

Yeah I think after I saw what iPadOS 15 was about after they show cased the M1 in the iPad Pro, I knew Apple is simply going to offer way overpowered hardware and keep it held back by the software so they can continue to sell you a Mac and iPad.

I've had a Samsung Galaxy S4 tablet for years and there's nothing wrong with it as a tablet (I also own an M1 iPad Pro and a 2nd gen iPad Pro) it no longer gets Android OS upgrades but it still gets regular security updates. In fact I went a whole year just using the S4 and didn't miss my old iPad (which had broken) at all. Sure the iPad experience is a little more refined and mature, but with Samsung the experience is pretty darn close, especially with the new S7+, and it has the killer Samsung Dex feature which turns your tablet into a desktop experience when you plug it into an external monitor (which admittedly I've never used because I have other dedicated computers, but if you just own a tablet then it's cool).

I tend to use my S4 in bed or when I when I'm in situations where I don't want my iPad to potentially get scratched (kids), it does web surfing, YouTube, Netflix, and light gaming just fine.

I don't get the "them vs us" mentality of some people, I use Apple, Android and Microsoft devices interchangably on a daily basis and the experience has been universally great on all platforms and operating systems.
