I had the original iPad for years - until so many things stopped working due to lack of updates. At which point, I jumped ship to Samsung - larger screen, lighter, more powerful, and yet disappointing. Despite that, I bought a smaller Samsung as a GPS device - phone screen was too small - and it was OK but has a very disappointing screen (poor colour and contrast). Both are now being sold.

When I got my iPhone 12 Pro, it threw into focus quite how poor the performance of both tablets. It also has a screen that is just large enough to use for GPS. Hence my decision to get rid of the tablets and get an iPad.

Partner has an iPad Air (not even a very recent one) and its performance and screen are far, far better.

I'm simply deciding which one to go for - Air or Pro? Current model or previous?

So this article was comparing the combined sales of the 2nd and 4th position tablets, against an extrapolated number from the (presumed but likely) 1st place? Cool.

Wow, Amazon and Samsung make iPads? Bad title guys... Apple shipped more TABLETS than Amazon or Samsung...

(you fixed it while i posted this snide rude comment... good job guys!) 😀
iPad seems to have become the de facto term for tablets.

I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing..... only that it's convenient and lazy terminology for most people.

Yet their market share decreased...

Interesting way to frame the headline and article

Because there are more and more uber cheap tablets that Apple isn’t competing against, they’re not targeting that segment of the market at all, so I’m not sure I’d consider the loss of marketshare in that case a problem.

I had the same decision to make and went with the air plus the magic keyboard. For the current capabilities of iPadOS I felt the Pro was overpowered for the money and the savings covered the keyboard, which I love. I figure at the point when iPadOS can actually take advantage of heavier hardware, thunderbolt, etc this iPad will be at least a couple years old and I can consider upgrading.

And I have to say I’m loving the Air, performance is great and I prefer touchID to faceID anyway so that’s a bonus.

While the iPad has long been the world's most popular tablet, newly published market research helps put Apple's lead into perspective.

According to estimates shared by research firm IDC, Apple shipped 12.9 million iPads in the second quarter of 2021. By comparison, IDC estimated that Samsung and Amazon shipped a combined 12.3 million tablets in the quarter, suggesting that Apple shipped more tablets than Samsung and Amazon did combined in the quarter.

A big caveat is that Apple no longer reports iPad unit sales in its earnings results, forcing IDC to estimate shipments based off the iPad quarterly revenue number that Apple does share. As a result, other research firms like Strategy Analytics and Canalys have different iPad shipment numbers for the second quarter, but it doesn't change the narrative, as both have Apple with a significant lead over Samsung and Amazon.

iPad sales continued to surge last quarter as many people continue to work, learn, and communicate with others remotely. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the ‌iPad‌ had its best June quarter in nearly a decade, with the company reporting iPad revenue of $7.4 billion in the quarter, a significant increase over $6.6 billion in the year-ago quarter.

The launch of a new iPad Pro with an M1 chip and a mini-LED display on the 12.9-inch model likely also bolstered sales during the quarter.

Very interesting. In the US — excluding iPads — the tablets I see most out in the wild are Amazons Kindle Fire models. I think I see the 8’ model the most.

But I guess since this is worldwide, Samsung being in 2nd place makes more sense. I wonder how the Tab S7 and Tab S7+ sold, specifically. I got to play around with the Tab S7+ a little bit, and it was pretty cool — BEAUTIFUL screen, and Dex mode was neat.

But, there’s no way in hell that I’m ever paying iPad Pro money for a Samsung tablet, lol.

the only thing Samsung and amazon are good at is making cheap devices! not even fair to compare them to apple!
Samsung makes some really nice tablets at the higher end. I wouldn’t choose one over my iPad, but they’re still well built, cool machines.

That's funny, I didn't know Samsung shipped iPads!
I had a boss ten years ago who had a crappy, low end Sammy Tablet that she was always having problems with. She knew I liked tech, and called me in her office one day to see if I could fix her “Samsung iPad.” When I politely explained to her that it was NOT an iPad, she argued that it was, then got pissed at me and told me to get back to work.

Btw, this was a government job, one that was in a health field, and that directly impacted peoples lives. Based on what I saw during my time working there, I would never recommend getting old in Texas, lmao.

Tablets are very 2013, still can’t find a use for an iPad, not even watching youtube.
Then I guess it’s settled: you don’t need a tablet!

I’m glad we could all be here with you today, on this momentous day! I know that I’ll be telling my grandkids about it someday!

They purged their old “what’s a computer” iPad adverts from YouTube, and the latest keynote showed iOS 15 has no ambition as a full OS, but they spent plenty of time demonstrating iPad as a second screen for Mac.
That’s only because they’re gearing up their new “what’s a tablet” Mac ads

iPad is a tweener product. Not as good as an $80 Amazon Fire HD10 with YouTube Vanced app for media consumption. iPad Pro is overpriced, too gimped by iPadOS and lacks full desktop browser that $250 Chromebooks have. If I could only take one device when I hit the road I'd take the Surface Pro X. iPad Pro M1 stays home until it gets MacOS.

Lol, why did you buy one in the first place, then?

I have had 4 ipads, first two were built solid 1 is obsolete, other gave to a friend. i'm considering Samsung now, since my ipad air 3 just got the grey screen band barely 2 years 4 months old, now i have to find someone to fix it, out of applecare, for this price, no. best to get something cheaper esp since i just cruize the internet, watch youtube, or watch netflix on it on occasion, great for reading. but for that price if its not going to last not worth it. if my ipad 12.9 goes out, i'm seriously done. Whats worse is alot of folks have had issues with the grey band. Does anyone else know if other vendors have the same problem with their screens?
I’m sorry your iPad broke, but I’ve never seen or heard of this grey screen band thing before. Care to explain?

And I bet if you took that iPad Air into the Apple Store, and were polite but persistent, you could get it replaced. Might be worth a shot!

Another quarter... another round of these:

"Apple sells more tablets than anyone else..."

"I still don't understand what tablets are for..."

:p
There’s a hilarious discrepancy between what tech dudebros think gets people excited and what people actually buy.

(See also: nobody will buy an iPhone because it lacks a physical keyboard.)

Shipped is one thing.

We know that people are buying ipads.

How many of those cheap android tablets actually end up getting purchased by other consumers, vs simply collecting dust on shelves and in warehouses? You can keep churning and flooding the market with cheap tablets to lower the iPad’s effective market share. Doesn’t mean anything if nobody is actually buying them.

So in terms of actual usage share (ie: people actually owning and using these tablets in any meaningful fashion), I won’t be surprised if the actual percentage was a lot higher. Probably well over 60%.

Yes they’re being used, as far as my own experience goes. I bought an iPad for myself but for my wife and parents I’ve bought 4 Android tablets.

They get used much more than my iPad though I do have more devices in general to choose between.

Since they aren’t in the Apple ecosystem the benefits of iPad mean nothing to them so it’s not worth the premium. The combined cost of all their tablets is less than my single iPad.

I suspect Android tablets get used more often than iPads. No one’s buying Android tablets to look cool. No one’s upgrading them every year to show off. They get bought to get used.

I've had a Samsung Galaxy S4 tablet for years and there's nothing wrong with it as a tablet (I also own an M1 iPad Pro and a 2nd gen iPad Pro) it no longer gets Android OS upgrades but it still gets regular security updates. In fact I went a whole year just using the S4 and didn't miss my old iPad (which had broken) at all. Sure the iPad experience is a little more refined and mature, but with Samsung the experience is pretty darn close, especially with the new S7+, and it has the killer Samsung Dex feature which turns your tablet into a desktop experience when you plug it into an external monitor (which admittedly I've never used because I have other dedicated computers, but if you just own a tablet then it's cool).

I tend to use my S4 in bed or when I when I'm in situations where I don't want my iPad to potentially get scratched (kids), it does web surfing, YouTube, Netflix, and light gaming just fine.

I don't get the "them vs us" mentality of some people, I use Apple, Android and Microsoft devices interchangably on a daily basis and the experience has been universally great on all platforms and operating systems.
Although I prefer an iPad because it integrates better with my apple devices. At the end of the day for basic things, like web browsing, watching videos, social media and casual gaming most tablets are more than capable.

I have an iPad Pro 11 inch and an iPad mini. However I also have an old nexus 7 from 2013. It hasn’t had an update in years but for the basics it’s more than capable.

The iPad is dope.

Pure and simple.

It took roughly ten years, but the Post-PC Era is really here (for many of us, at least).
Almost. Until you need to do something that only a traditional computer can do. My iPad mini got stuck in a boot loop after it tried to auto update to iPad OS 14.7. I had to connect it to my Mac and do a restore via iTunes.

Amazon HD 10 is 149.99 pounds in the UK with ads - and 189.99 without.

Considerably more than $80.
Maybe they mean when it’s on sale. Depends on the target audience. For me no. However for my 3 year old and 5 year old who keep smashing their screens and posting their tablets out the letter box and windows. The fire is the perfect decide for them. I don’t mind paying £80 to replace it. I’m not buying them an iPad yet until they stop breaking things.
