I hope AAPL gets the pressure from MSFT or OpenAI.
Unbelievable what AAPL sells nowadays..
Nothing new..
Which is why I'm perfectly happy with my 13 Pro Max. Works as good today as Day 1 and really, there aren't any new features that Apple has introduced that were cool enough to want them. Bump the chip, add 100 emoji's and some photo magic and call it a new model.

Hilarious that people here see this as some sort of victory for Apple and doom and gloom for Android.

The numbers still speak for themselves: Android phone shipments at 932M units, vs Apple at 234M. That's about 4X more Android phones shipped than Apple.

I have both and use both and while I prefer iPhone, some Android phone hardware is simply better.

I want to get Siri updated massively.
But given the state of Siri today, I have zero confidence that AAPL will ever catch up with Microsoft and OpenAI in terms of their generative AI.

Apple just relies on their App Store and premium iPhones.
I think it is really about time for Tim Cook to resign.

Peak smartphone is already here.

This is why Apple is pushing higher and higher priced iPhones. In economics, companies in a declining market will increase the average selling price to make up for declining or stagnating volume.

So if we see headlines like "iPhone is selling worse this year", it doesn't mean much. It's expected. We need to look at average selling price to see how much money Apple is actually making instead of volume.
Or, you know, look at the actual revenue and profit, as posted by Apple.

Did Android market share go up or down?

I’ll take a Samsung defeat over an Apple Victory 7 days a week.

Who knows. If you go by "preliminary data" it dropped 0.7% which is definitely within a margin of error, especially since this "preliminary data" is a guess, at best.

Curious why you want Samsung to fail so bad? You think no competition is a good thing?

Eh, its like sports. I don't think the typical Apple/Samsung forum battles are really want to end competition or see the other fail, its just wearing the jersey for the phone you prefer.

I bought a 15PM and returned several days later. I could not justify buying it when my 12PM is perfectly fine.

Apple overtook Samsung as the top global smartphone manufacturer in 2023, according to preliminary data from market research firm IDC. If the data is accurate, it is the first time Samsung has lost the top spot to another company in 13 years. In 2013, Nokia held the number one spot, Samsung was second, and Apple didn't even feature in the top five.

iphone-14-cyber.jpg

IDC bases its analyses on market share of global smartphone shipments across the year. According to the report, Apple took a 20.1% market share, while Samsung took 19.4% of the share.

Apple was also the only company in the top three to achieve positive growth year-on-year, increasing shipments from 226.3 million units to 234.6 million units.
Samsung's drop in rank is interpreted as only partly down to strong sales of Apple's iPhone 14 models and the company's debut of the iPhone 15 series, while diversification in the Android market is also said to be a factor. Other impacting variables are said to include Huawei's resurgence in China, and brands like OnePlus, Honor, Google, and others launching competitive devices in the lower price range of the high-end market.

idc-global-smartphone-shipments-2023.jpg

Overall, the smartphone market declined by 3.2% to 1.17 billion units shipped across the year, driven largely by macroeconomic challenges and elevated inventory early in the year. However, a growth spurt in the latter stages of 2023 suggests the market could see a recovery this year, with foldable devices and increased interest in AI capabilities also said to be gaining traction.

I am a bit surprised Hauwei is not in the top 5 (are they part of Xiaomi?). I was in China for nearly a month this past November and December. Hauwei is everywhere in China. I saw one Apple Store (Shanghai) and probably 15 Hauwei stores (In addition to Shanghai, we travelled to about 8 mid-sized cities over 1,200 miles).

but Hauwei is the state sponsored vendor in China... no surprise with this info...

I had a 12P, traded it for a 15PM. I liked the size of the 12P better, but wanted (and got) three things with the 15PM: much improved battery life, 5x optical zoom, and the real deal for me, Satellite-based SOS messaging (for when I am out canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, x-country skiing or snowshoeing in the wilderness. near my cabin). In mid-2023, I actually bought a Garmin device simply for this feature, until I heard the iPhone 14 Pro had this, and then returned the Garmin and decided to just wait for the 15. With the trade-in I got from AT&T on the 12P (locking me in for another 18 months doesn't matter since I need AT&T's reception at my cabin), moving to the 15PM was cheaper than buying the Garmin.

Looks like those foldable phones Samsung kept pushing had no impact.
Oh, but folding phones are the future and Apple has missed the boat totally. Too bad, so sad, Apple is failing.

At least that's the narrative we read on these forums.

What makes Apple’s success even more remarkable is that Samsung sells most of its phones in the $100 to $300 range.

Android is always going to outsell iPhone as long as you can go and buy a $200 Android phone brand new.

It's hilarious that some people haven't realized that Apple isn't trying to outsell Android globally and hasn't been doing so for like a decade now. They'd love to, sure, but they'd rather make high profit margins off of high end phones.

In a declining market, market share is more critical as a company is fighting harder for each sale - which does not lead to what you say - but typically higher levels of promotional activity, discounting, or price reductions.

Apple is usually the outlier company, but even they have done this. Apple though does not discount products in Apple Store or online directly - they do it through third party sellers to give the perception they do not do this which works - case in point your comment. The worse place to buy an Apple product is from Apple unless using their financing.

Good. I don’t and have never used an Android virus phone!
Which has never been a real thing except for people who sideloaded apps from shady sources (porn FTW) and deserved the virus they got.... but same is 100% true for IOS users that jail broke. I agree IOS is a bit more secure than Android and less prone to letting crap apps in the wild but it's a fractional difference. In every other technical respect, Android is far more advanced than IOS and really comes down to preference.

They are 6th... the US ban hurt them a bit. They were really making a dent here in the budget phone segment.

It's hilarious that you think that. Apple does not discount directly but does discount through third parties. You can readily get an iPhone for $99-$200 or free through phone carriers - even in the prepaid market where the bulk of cheap phones sell from. Even Apple knows not everyone needs a high end phone and has a budget model and keeps old models around at a discount - with third party resellers getting Apple subsidized discounts.

Anyone that wants an iPhone can have one - but not everyone wants a dumbed down OS or phone that is consistently behind in features or so restrictive. I miss a bunch of things about Android - but the reason I use a lesser OS is the intergration with my other Apple products by and large. There are valid reasons why Android users hate IOS - but most IOS users just don't have any way to know better beacsue they don't use Android and never have.

So it seems that Samsung is losing the high-end segment of the market to Apple, and the lower end to Transsion. It's pretty impressive when you realise that Apple shipped an additional 8 million iPhones when they deal mostly in the high-end part of the market, and in line with Tim Cook's comments on how they are seeing a large number of switchers from Android.
To be honest I don't think Samsung ever really had a good hold of the high end market. They peaked between 2012-2015 and it's been down hill since then.

Samsung is not what they once were. There is a lot of competition on the Android side, including quality competition, that is eating them from below.
