If the rumours about the iPhone 5 are true, then this will be big. A very big step in the iPhone's history, and Apple's. Let's see it come to fruition.. can't wait. I'll be getting the iPhone 5 on the launch day.

I would be happy

I would be happy with any improvements as long as 1GB of RAM and 64GB of storage were two of them.

unlocked?

Does any one know if i ll be able to pre-order an unlocked iPhone 5.?? or just the contract one will b able to pre-order?

Order limit?

I have a family of 6 (family plan plus one go phone account). Will they let me buy 6 at once online, 2 at a time spread out or do we all have to show up to an actual store?

they usually only give out 2 at the beginning due to low quantity and they dont make as much money with existing customers.

bit ot but apple still has a limit of 2 per account of iPads in their store for example

If you get a family plan like the following:

https://buyiphone.apple.com/WebObje.../3.0.1.3.3.0.3.3.3?sender=preauth-button-next

Is that voice plan for both phones combined or per phone?

Also do you pay for the phone up front or is it paid for in installments as part of the monthly bill? I can't remember how I used to do it in America, here in Japan monthly installments are usually the only way they do it (and actually make the phone cheaper, oddly enough).

...and FTR, the iPhone is showing as unavailable from Verizon with no expected ship date on Apple's site. Just "currently unavailable".

EDIT: It's showing up fine now, guess it was a safari glitch.

My thoughts (and hopes and dreams and wishes)...

The iPhone 5 will be a dual-core phone running the A5 chip. LTE 4G, compatible with both AT&T and Verizon. Will not move to T-Mobile (due to possible buyout), but MAYBE (big maybe) a move to Sprint. Larger screen (just less bevel, same ppi), same overall size (not a huge clunker like the Droid X2 or something). I'm believing these beveled mockups with a larger gesture-enabled home button. So that means thinner, but somehow pull off same battery or even increased battery life (A5 chip has better power management). Camera will be bumped to 8MP and front will have a slight bump too. 32GB and 64GB models. May see price raise to $250 and $350 on contract (like other 4G phones).

The iPhone 4S will be announced as a replacement to the iPhone 4. Same general design. Cheaper components (plastic back compared to current glass, cheaper and easier to color), will run a single core A5 chip (likely cheaper to produce A5's in bulk than keeping the A4 in production, it may even be a dual core A5 with a core turned off). This may be a "Cloud" phone with 8GB or less internal memory. Expect no contract option (most of the world runs this way), priced at $300-$400. $100 or $150 on contract.

The iPhone 3GS may still live on in it's current fashion. It'll hit free on contract. $200 off contract. (I expect this to die off this time though).

RELEASE DATES:

Most people think the iPhone 5 was pushed back so that Verizon had it's fair time with the iPhone 4 (5-6 months). Verizon should know (as well as Apple) that people are waiting to purchase an iPhone now. The iPhone 5 was pushed back due to 4G LTE testing, but Apple is hiding it under the iCloud + iOS 5 testing veil. (Wishful thinking, it's likely really due to iCloud and iOS 5, haha).

So yea, September 7th announcement and pre-order with September release for U.S. and select countries. China Mobile coming live in October.

IPAD 3/2 PRO

I'm still up in the air on this one. I could see an iPad HD with retina display and Final Cut Pro on the iPad (they don't really care about tarnishing that name anymore). I think they'd just wait for the iPad 3 instead of making a consumer line and pro line. They seem to be stepping away from that trend in their laptops.

I hope they make a ton of them so they don't get backed up for months like the 4s did.

Just a MacRumors newbie...and someone with too much time on their hands...

Hey there iphone 5, 2010 Q4 wants it's tech back.
Considering this phone is not even expected out perform the Galaxys S2, there's nothing exciting for the tech hungry user. Only loyal Apple followers will be excited as they will buy this phone regardless of how it performs. And that's a sad but guaranteed fact. Apple has got bigger worries in regards to what is on the Android horizon. Galaxy S3 is just around the corner.

Loyal Apple followers? What are you expecting? Your smartphone to render HD movies you made on it?

I'm sure people have genuine reasons for sticking with the iPhone. For me, it's iOS and hardware mix, the phone feels so in-tune and feels great to use. I've used an Android phone before, and it's just not for me.

But.. if the Galaxy S2 was running iOS, then i would've switched to it long time ago!

Actually i hear the Galaxy S4 will be coming out in exactly 1 year. Better hold off for that instead.

Changing the subject here, but, it really is impressive how secretive apple is able to be despite the demand for information regarding any product. Save for a few slip ups here and there, some major, some minor, it's cool and fun to see how much we all really are guessing about future products until right before launch. I love this website because, honestly, how boring of a company would Apple be if the iPhone 5 was showcased 8 months ago.

Just saying, props to MacRumors for constantly digging, and props to Apple for making us dig.

Business 101: Lesson 01: Business is consumer driven.

What does that mean? It means you do what the customer wants. Produce what the customer will buy.

As soon as other companies figure out that it's not the specs that sell smartphones, it's the experience, then they might stand a chance.

I feel for them though. They've had a uphill battle. Apple invented this new touch screen smartphone market with the AppStore Ecosystem so people associate the name. Android has some great features (app drawer, widgets, multiple homesceen layouts, etc) and thanks to Verizon not having the iPhone for so long, Android stands a chance, but with so many hardware manufacturers, the average consumer is overwhelmed.

Apple is a solid experience. They don't advertise about the stuff people (again, average consumers, not you and me) don't understand (processor speed, megapixels, etc). They sell the experience.

I bought my dad a Motorola Droid X2 for father's day. He loves it. I think it's a great phone. My mom doesn't want to touch it. She's good with her iPhone, and so am I.

Multi-touch backside (and wishlist)

That mockup reminded me of a rumor I once – I think 3g-ish – heard, namely that Apple would also make the back of the device capable of recognizing multi-touch gestures, with semi-transparent discs showing the finger-tip positions on screen, thereby giving fuller view of the contents which is especially useful in games. Any news on that, at all?

PS: I liked pleasefixtheiphone.com, but it stopped being updated around the i-phone 2 release. Does someone know something similar?
