The rumors of a new Apple product have been heating up over the last 3 months. It's pretty interesting to watch how people react to the rumors. Can't wait to see what appears. or doesn't appear.

I lay odds on the MaxiPod.

Come on Doctor Q, there's no market for apple cider.
I guess that's true, since you can only drink it from Apple-proprietary mugs that cost twice as much.

If the commercial was for a tablet (instead of food products) then I'd expect them to be shooting a lot of different ads. A new product deserve a major ad campaign, not a single ad.

Hip, cool spot for the 20-something crowd = 1940s-style diner???

Golly, these cats sure are square! I mean, gee, you can't have a sock hop at a diner!!

Truckee, as the article notes, is just outside of Lake Tahoe. It is in fact, one of the last major "cities" that you can go through before reaching Tahoe. Depending on the restaurant, you could have a lot of snowboarding types - which would seem to fit in with a "hip, cool" theme. :)

There is NO WAY that Apple would put the tablet or any unannounced new form factor out in the public light like that. Thing about the iPhone 3G/3Gs commerical, not a single actor in the commercial every saw the device really. They simply acted out scenes and then the device was by itself in a shot with no one in the room.

we aren't talking about some type of radioactive substance where no one can come into close contact with it without exploding. I'm sure the actors involved went..oh neat new product...to which apple said yeah sign this..if you mention anything..we own your life. That will most likely take care of any chance of anyone saying anything. And its not like apple walked into the diner full of people saying listen everyone..we have a new product we are shooting a commercial for..heres the specs...but all of you just keep on eating your pancakes and make sure you dont tell anyone. thanks.

btw
why isnt this on the main rumor page? i think its a more important rumor than some of the ones up there now. this clearly is a commercial for something new..be it ipod, tablet, mac..whatever...

I'm somewhat irked knowing that I was just there.

I missed it. :(

Ahhh... if you are so inclined, you can provide a valuable service-- return to the diner and see if you can get answers to some (non-NDA) questions:

-- was the shoot during normal business hours?
-- were their any Diner employes present?
-- were Diner customers allowed to come and go?
-- were the glass windows and doors covered to prevent seeing into the Diner?
-- how long did the shoot take?
-- approximately how many "paid actors" were involved in the shoot?

You, too, can become a MR cub reporter! :D

Yeah, countering the Zune HD, they'll release the iPod LP; it will automatically add distortion and vinyl-like noise to all your music so it sounds like it's from an actual turntable album from 20 years ago! :D

Available January 2010.

"HD was so last decade."

The Truckee area has some of the best 3G reception and full bars throughout the area for AT&T. On the VZ side of the house, again full bars and VCast and all that stuff is the best that they offer. So, whomever is getting the MacTablet account definitely has a great service area for the commercial; if that's what the commercial was setup for; the iProd?.....:eek::eek:

They did it in November 1983, with the original Mac. An all-day shoot was done in our Computer store showing a couple buying an Original Mac.

The shoot was during normal business hours, so the glass windows and doors were papered-over so no one could see in. The doors were locked, so Customers were met outside, by our employees, for any necessary business transactions: (sales, questions, repairs, etc.). Response from the "locked-out" customers was very positive (vicarious excitement to be aware that an exciting new product was coming?).

Store employees were used as background extras (sales people, customers, clerks). Scenes showed:
-- a young couple entering the store
-- couple given a demo of the Mac
-- couple purchasing Mac at front counter
-- salesman putting Mac into Mac Bag
-- couple leaving store with Mac Bag

These were shot over and over from several angles, with different lighting, background, etc.

AIR, there were 2 Mac computers present, 3 paid actors, about 10 people in the film crew and one "creative" fron Chiat Day.

The product of the shoot was several 5-10 second shots in some 30-60 second ads.

The environment was pretty controlled, but all employees present (about 15) got to see the Mac. I got to play with MacDraw for about 15 minutes.

So, YES WAY Apple has put a new, revolutionary product in a controlled public environment.

Apple has done it before with a Steve Jobs product!

The only downside, was that the ad was shot almost 2 months before the Mac was announced... Hopefully the computers and software available today can reduce the time to a few days or weeks!

So you just used an event from 1983!!! to argue why Apple will act in the same way in 2009!!! Call me crazy, but that's slightly irrational.

LOL.. you've apparently not heard of an NDA (non-disclosure agreement)

I've heard of an NDA, but from Apple's point of view, why show it (referring to the "tablet" now) to an actor/anyone, if its not 100% necessary?

we aren't talking about some type of radioactive substance where no one can come into close contact with it without exploding. I'm sure the actors involved went..oh neat new product...to which apple said yeah sign this..if you mention anything..we own your life. Again, why would Apple have someone see it, if its not necessary?

We're talking about the same company who has their enigineers put black cloths over the products they're working on to keep them private from the people who scan through 4 doors, finger, retna, and pinky toe (sarcasm) scans just to get to work. Would they really just let a product that was treated like that ^ sit around in front of some actors who could blab to a blog?

why isnt this on the main rumor page? i think its a more important rumor than some of the ones up there now.

Completely agree.

Sounds like more of a news feed found here; as in maybe the owner made cool ads with an Apple product or the crowd there uses Apple products for something hip. I seriously cannot see them shooting a commercial in a restaurant. No other Apple commercials have been at specific locations. It is white background or color/music videos for iPods.

Maybe in preparation for an article like this.

Very cool. Almost feels like the night before Christmas... something exciting could happen...

I think you might be right, although Apple has done commercials outside (see: original iPhone commercials with story lines of Pilot, Artist, Couple at dinner trying to remember name of wife))

Anyone remember those?

Ah, but you made the statement:

There is NO WAY that Apple would put the tablet or any unannounced new form factor out in the public light like that.

That's a pretty all-encompassing statement, like "Never had or never would".

All I did was point to one instance that refutes your "NO WAY" statement (and several others in your post).

The fact that it was done for what was a major event in Apple's history, and one that involved a Steve Jobs project signifies it, likely, could be done for a new product. There is a precedent!

Not to get in a pissing contest here, but isn't it "slightly irrational" to argue with history?

Not only that, but Apple is a company that seems very cognizant of its history. For example, they brought back the famous "1984" add for one of the iPods.

Are people really arguing whether Apple would introduce a new product to the public through a commercial before it's released? Are we THAT bored? LOL Just... wow...

Back on topic, I'm excited to discover what lies behind the curtain. Time will tell...

Very true, though they'll have to change advertising style at some point - they can't keep showing similar adverts and keep the brand image fresh.

Didn't Apple use a real location for the 3G iPod nano ads in a warehouse? I don't know whether they came before or after the iPhone ads (September 2007 release), just though I'd throw them into the mix.

No one is arguing that Apple will "introduce" a new product through a commercial.

Like most significant products, Apple will, likely, hold a "special event" to get the most press.

Then, while there is still buzz, Apple will follow up with media ads.

These "commercials" will have been filmed and edited, in advance, so they are ready to go on the day of announcement.

A lot of work goes into a 30-second ad, from conception to completion can take months, and a lot material is left on the cutting room floor.

There was also the unreleased ads for OS X (I think it was for tiger) where they showed a fuzzy X outside in various places.

It's an iPhone commercial.

"Say you are at a diner with a group of friends. <Insert few app plugs here> There's an app for that... Only on iPhone."
