It's an iPhone commercial.

"Say you are at a diner with a group of friends. <Insert few app plugs here> There's an app for that... Only on iPhone."

Say you are at a diner with a group of friends. And one of you wants to call your mom to let her know you will be coming home late. there's app for that - the phone feature on the new iPhone 3gs."

I'm going to guess this is for an updated iPod/iTunes, and not a new product.

Hmmm. A retro-themed diner. Jukebox perhaps? Something with the rumored social media sharing?

Wow I was about to say the same thing about a jukebox being in the advertisement. I am guessing it will be something related to the rumored "Cocktail" release next month. So maybe a symbolic reference to the old days of large album art meets the new days of interactive album art. This could be a big update to coverflow in some form too. So the new iPod Touch in a retro dinner with a jukebox and showing off the amazing new interface for enjoying interactive album art... is what I get out of all this.

where are iPhone,iPod touch,Mac commercials usually filmed?.

and how are the iPhone commercials shot?, with a camera directly facing the iPhone the user would have to be in an awkward angle to see what he/she's doing

G5?

This is way more RETRO, its 40's style. I have a friend who snagged a shot of the scene, you decide for yourselves...

When was the last time Apple actually released a rumored Tablet device? :D

When it finally does, 20-somethings will be using it as their primary computing experience going forward. That will be a day almost as revolutionary as the iPhone has turned out to be.

Desktop sales have dropped. I wonder when laptop sales will drop too?

The day is neigh.

Hip 40s style diner?

Hip, cool spot for the 20-something crowd = 1940s-style diner???

Golly, these cats sure are square! I mean, gee, you can't have a sock hop at a diner!!

Thank you, you stole the words right out of my mouth. Well, not verbatim, but...

Ooh, intriguing. I'd be no less delighted if it was just a new advertisement style with only an iPod refresh - I personally am a bit tired of the Mac VS PC formula. Let's see some actual human beings using Macs, hmm? =P

(Tablet would be awesome too.)

As long as the tablet has a real keyboard, not that touch keyboard garbage. I just don't see Apple being successful introducing a tablet in this economy. It's gotta have a real killer feature to sell well. Who wants to type on a virtual keyboard on a small notebook sized screen and have hardly any room for the actual content? So far there hasn't been a good mockup for a touch tablet (with no physical keyboard) that is ergonomically feasible. The average Joe is not going to shell out $800 for a giant iPod Touch as a replacement for a netbook or notebook.

Automated Simulations...

Actually when you really think about it they don't need any products on site at all.
The ad can cut to a tight shot which is in a studio and simulates the surrounding environment.
The editor then mashes the scenes together, adjusts the lighting and there you have it... Juke Box 50's product in hand at the local diner

If it's the juke box theme then hazard a guess it's to do with theme's already mentioned earlier.

Sorry, I was laughing too hard to post a comment :p

I think Steve would OK that ad if he wasn't so publicity-shy.

It could also swing the way I hope and be referencing the 40's wartime domestic manufacturing efforts and thel'll announce a technology war where they produce every piece in the USA!

If by 'poor taste' you mean 'hilarious' then yes, it certainly was...

Cant believe only two people have commented on that

Whenever it happens...you will be proven wrong on all counts.

All I did was point to one instance that refutes your "NO WAY" statement (and several others in your post).

The fact that it was done for what was a major event in Apple's history, and one that involved a Steve Jobs project signifies it, likely, could be done for a new product. There is a precedent!

Not to get in a pissing contest here...

So basically you're just trying to pick a petty fight on a small wording issue in my comment? Wow. To clarify, I meant in the modern-era (circa later than 2000) there is NO WAY Apple would do such a thing as put the tablet in a public place where others could possibly see it.

Is that good?

My guess is a Digital45 ad. iDevice music sharing - everyones listens to their Phone or Touch while everyone selects songs.

Someone make an app for that.

I think it would be a good idea to have an on screen, touch controlled keyboard but you should also be able to hook up a wireless bluetooth keyboard and be able use that if you dont like the idea of an on screen virtual keyboard.

C'mon people! It's 2009!!

Where have you all been in the last decade?

If Apple wanted to shoot a commercial for the new iTablet (whatever they decided to call it), all they would have to do is have actors ooh and aah over a greenscreen-painted, external dimensions accurate prop with registration +'s all over it. Everyone on the set could be snapping off pics with their phone cams all day with nothing decent to show on Facebook/MySpace/MacRumors, etc. No need for NDA's, except maybe for dialog content, which is not nearly as sexy to feed rumors with than the ubiquitous "hasty and blurry elevator pic" seems to be.

In post production, the final computer model of the iTab could be added easily. When shooting, all of the lighting and camera angle info would be recorded and emulated in the CGI. If they alter the look of everything to make it retro 40's (maybe with film grain or altered color schemes), you'd never, ever be able to tell that it wasn't actually present during the shoot.

Nearly every computer commercial posts the disclaimer "screen images simulated." In this case, the entire unit would be simulated.

Nice thing about this approach is that any last minute design changes could be incorporated into the commercial without a reshoot.

That must be the first time "hip" and "cool" were ever used in conjunction with "Truckee."
