No dirt in my microsd slot. Unless you're opening and closing the door all the time you should be fine.

The point is that with hot-swappable MicroSD card support, you really do have unlimited options. You can carry as many cards with you as you want (each card is the size of a fingernail) and you can swap them without having to turn your device off and on again.

Confusing. Is it a problem or not?

That's what I'm thinking as well. Apple did that for a reason, they don't decision because they can get more profit. They care about the user experience as well.

...and you would be wrong. While there may be other factors, profit is by far the biggest reason they don't have expandable memory.

Just look at the prices they charge for upgrades on their computers as proof.

On their lowest priced iMac right now, it costs $200 to increase the RAM from 4GB to 8GB (2x4GB chips). The same chips can easily be had for under $50 elsewhere and installed by anyone within minutes.

Imagine if the memory card is removable and you lose your iPhone :D

Think!

Yes because having no MMS, no copy and paste, and no notifications from the get go was a great way to show they care about the user experience. It only took two years to get simple MMS and customers are still waiting for a bigger screen.

Its remarkable how many here are brainwashed. Its totally for the profits leaving out a micro card.

I understand wanting more memory, but wanting more memory and a MicroSD slot so you can use your phone as an external hard drive or something? It's a phone! it is getting to the point that people are using these devices for things that they are clearly not designed for! Carry around a small flash drive, or better yet an actual external hard drive! I have one that fits in my pocket just fine!

That's funny since the original iPod was designed to be used as an external drive.

For me, I'd like to have a MicroSD slot so I could carry ALL of my music and videos with me when needed and have the ability to dump photos and captured videos off my phone.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I shouldn't be expected to carry a laptop with me at all times when on vacations or camping... yet it's VERY easy to fill a phone if you're taking a lot of pictures or video footage (something that the devices clearly ARE designed to do).

Is what a problem?

Smartphones aren't just phones though, are they? They are:

- alarm clocks
- music players
- gps units
- personal organisers
- Internet enabled devices
- plus a whole lot more...

Not sure why you would say they're not designed for such a purpose when you can view and edit documents on your smartphone, use email, connect them to your computer, play music, etc. There are clearly lots of reasons to allow smartphones to be used as a portable hard drive.

You're clearly mistaking the smartphone with the phone. Smartphones have always aimed to consolidate devices so that you carry less with you. Why carry a portable hard drive when your smart phone has that very thing?

Your logic is silly.

Because a smart phone has never been designed to be a portable hard drive. It is designed to get some tasks done easier and faster. I don't a smart phone has ever been advertised an external hard drive. In my opinion if you are trying to use the phone as an external hard drive then you are attempting to use the phone for stuff it was not designed for. It may so happen work a little bit but don't keep asking for external hard drive features when the phone is not that.

I dont think that they are gonna produce that in iPhone. Without the choice of purchasing a bigger external memory, Apple can make more money of it's 64gb version. business. But the fact is you can't really use all of the memory. I'm using a 16gb version and still got 6gb free to use. :) Just delete the apps that you dont need then you will be fine.

I can't believe people wouldn't want an expandable memory slot. If you buy an 16GB iPhone in the US that's $199. If you want to add more memory you can't you either have to delete thing off your phone or buy a bigger size iPhone. the 32GB iPhone is $299 and the 64GB is $399.

Now let's look at the price of a 16 GB MicroSDHC card.. So I can buy a 16GB iPhone for $199 and buy another 16GB MicroSDHC for another $9 saving myself $90. A 32GB cost Why would anyone not want this option?

It's not a deal breaker to me but I would like to have more room on my phone without having to pay a hundred dollars more. I have the 32GB iPhone 4. I have around 26 GB of music on my iTunes, so i got iTunes Match. Let me tell you it's it's garbage. I have a lot of pictures and videos that I taken with my phone. It be nice to keep them on my phone. I also have around 120 apps.

Seems getting a phone that "just works" ain't cheap, brother.

having an sd card is always less secure.
other than that I believe you are purchasing a quality product because it is the way it is, I didnt see expandable memory in the first iphone and don't wish to see it in the coming future. it's utter nonsense. take a poll and see what I am talking about.

if it bothers ya'all so much shift to android for the expandable memory experience. you're lucky they even put a sim card slot in the phone, which was earlier being dropped to save space and weight.

I think you'll find that most smart phones can be used as portable hard drives, but iDevices can't.

People need to realize that it's not the same to have internal memory and expanded one through MicroSD or whatever.

External memory tend to be less stable, less durable and less reliable. It's much slower in reading and writing data. I had one and it wasn't a pleasing experience. Why would you want that on iPhone? It's a step back.

There's a reason MicroSD is dirt cheap. You can get as much as you want without breaking the bank on dollar store. But do you see? ... only a few smartphone out there featuring a generous internal memory. They're just much more expensive, better, faster, reliable than typical $20 MicroSD.

Sure I like having options and bigger memory won't hurt. But I dont want any external. Let it be 128GB iPhone when the time comes. Expandable memory is more of a liability rather than a benefit.

Im fine without expandable memory. Honestly, I just want LTE and I'll gladly give Apple more of my money

MicroSD is great for added storage. But my experience with it on a phone hasn't been great. Slows the phone down, have to power phone down to remove it (if programs are stored it, otherwise expect glitchyness), and always somehow f's things up (like 4 thumbnails showing for one pic....wtf is that about, Galaxy S II??).

I doubt most people would notice a speed difference of internal memory vs a class 10 microsd.

Music can load entire song in less then 1 second. And movies formatted for my android tablet load onto it in minutes (4-5) so there is no way you'd experience slow downs when watching the 2 hour long movie.

From my experience with android I personally never noticed any difference from internal to external memory.

Sure a stolen device could have the information on the card compromised but for me that's music and movies. I have a back up of all that on my pc. Just have to use your brain with what data you put on it. It's like a pass code, you need to be smart whether you need one or not.

"Having an SD card is always less secure." Yes, it is. But, the operative point is by what degree? The fact that it can be removed and lost means it is less secure. But if you're a competent individual and never lose things, then it's inconsequential.

"Removable memory is slower." Yes, it is. But, the operative point is by what degree? If you buy a quality memory card, the difference will be NEGLIGIBLE. They've done shoot-outs between the iPhone 4S and various Android phones. The Android phones tend to win, EVEN with operations that write to memory. So, this claim is really baseless.

There's only two good reasons why Apple does not provide expandable memory for the iPhone: it's cheaper to not provide an SD micro card slot, and it's HIGHLY PROFITABLE to charge 10-15 times more than the market rate for memory. Apple has been VERY successful at distracting people from this highly predatory practice of theirs. Nobody ever gives it more thought beyond "it lacks SD card support". I've only read one mainstream review that complained about how much Apple charges for additional memory, where there is absolutely no other incentive or benefit (special casing design, added functionality, etc).

People are amazed at how profitable Apple is... and it's no wonder. But, what if they did provide an expandable memory card? How much would that eat into Apple profits? I imagine it wouldn't be more than 1% of their revenue. That's hardly a dent. The trouble is that the population has NOT complained enough about it to Apple. It's just a telegraphing of how dumb, sheep-like, or careless the general population is.

With carriers screwing people over more and more for data, simply saying "use the cloud" isn't always feasible

A quick Google search showed that an 64GB micro SD class 6 card is right around $65. That's pretty cheap, when comparing to Apple's offering. Are we comparing apples to apples here though? Do these cards support the same read/write speeds as do the on-board chips in Apple's devices? Perhaps they are even faster? I honestly do not know, so that is why I am asking here.

Speed:
iPhone's internal memory chip is faster than microSD AFAIC

Security:
In case the iPhone gets stolen, if there's a removable memory card, even with iPhone screen lock passcode set, others can simply take the memory card out and browse all the data.

I'm pretty sure the memory Apple has in the iPhone is MUCH faster than access from a MicroSD card...

This. Much faster, by orders of magnitude. Besides taking up space (for the slot and extra circuitry to service it) MicroSD is slow--very slow in comparison to the modules Apple sources--and then you run in to the software issues addressing and using the MicroSD. Any one who has ever used Android and tried pushing apps to the MicroSD and then realized some can and some cannot and some only allow this part or that part on the MicroSD...you'll know what I'm talking about.

In short, not gonna happen.

The built in SSD in iPhones is roughly 70MB/s read 40MB/sec write. That'd be the equivilant of a 500x (or 70) rated MicroSD....something you're not going to find.

Of course, you would only need that kind of speed if it was to be used for apps. Personally, I'd like MicroSD cards to hold my media (music, video, and to dump taken pictures/ movies onto)....which nearly any card would be fast enough for.

Correct.

My PNY 32GB SDHC class 10 has a 20-24 read and 10-12 write which is plenty fast enough for the above things you mentioned.
And then there are These which were just announced on May 30th. More than twice the speed of mine on the read side, 4 times faster on the write side. More expensive though ($64 for a 32Gb compared to $32 i paid for my 32GB) but still cheaper than adding more from Apple ;)

I had a feeling this was the case as apps on the iPhone generally load faster than anything on an SD card on Android IME. Of course there are other factors at play there as well. Thanks for the clarification.

The down ratings on this site baffle me though. Why someone would downrate me for asking a legitimate question is beyond me.

There is an installation fee here. Again, compare apples to apples. Buy the chip elsewhere AND have it installed by their team. Saying you can buy the chip and install it yourself for $50 is not a very good comparison IMO.

They are installing the RAM at that price as well? I keep using the apples to apples reference. Let's take a company like Best Buy. They will install the ram for you in store for $50 or come to your home and do it for $150. That AND the 8GB of RAM in store would run you $50-80 dependent on certain variables (speeds, etc.).

As a good example in the automobile world, my fiance had her headlight replaced for $80 a few years back. Her other headlight went out and I decided to take a crack at it. $15 (the cost of the bulb and some grease) and 20 minutes later, she had her other headlight replaced. Now by my calculation, I saved $65 for 20 minutes of work. That's a whopping $195/hr in labor (which is about what I see on car quotes). Granted, a mechanic that does these sorts of things FAR more frequently than I do can probably have the bulb changed in half the time it took me, maybe less. It's all about convenience and knowledge.

If you are shopping places like newegg or Tiger Direct you are always going to get the bargain price as well. I think Apple's prices (speaking about RAM upgrades) are basically on par to the local big box stores. I do believe their warranty is also all encompassing of everything they (Apple) install for you.

Is all of this worth it? Hell, the avid computer fan would say a Mac isn't even worth the money since you can build something with better specs for much cheaper, let alone a RAM upgrade! It's all in what you can do yourself versus paying someone else to do it. Most businesses are like this. You get bent over for labor, not the actual hardware frequently.
