The best material for modern devices would actually be high end plastic. You can buy camera lenses worth thousands of dollars that are made with that very durable plastic. The advantage is that it can absorb a lot of energy when you you drop it and after that it will go back into its old state. That collides with the idea of making bezels thinner and thinner though, because there needs to be a buffer zone to absorb the energy.

I like the extra weight but I feel like using a fairly rare metal for a phone that gets thrown away every other year is kind of wasteful.

Hopefully all the metal gets recycled
When did people start throwing away their iPhones every other year? People keep them for years or if they trade them in to Apple for example they just pop in a new battery and sell it refurbished to somebody else.

Not entirely sold on the use of titanium in an iPhone as I can't really see what benefit it has for me as a user? The overall phone (15 Pro) is 19 grams lighter, great so what? I know the marketing points towards the nice curved edges and the brushed appearance. Again so what? Like most, I keep my iPhones in a case and this sort of detail is not seen unless I take the phone out of the case to clean it. The same is said for the stainless steel edge I have on my phone now. Another marketing point was the strength, and that did amuse me. What exactly are Apple proposing we do with our phones that would test this increase in strength? Have we ever fallen foul of the stainless steel edges not being quite strong enough?

Personally I think its just a pretty gimmick to differentiate the new model from previous releases. The chassis could be made of brass or tungsten and it would not make a blind bit of difference to my general use.

I used to think that Titanium is really expensive, but in fact it costs just a few dollars per kilo. With one kilo you can produce a lot of iPhone frames though. So it is just a few Cents per iPhone. Not sure how much manufacturing costs, but Apple would not do it if it was really expensive.
The increase in cost for using titanium in an iPhone is processing cost more than raw material. The chassis on an iPhone is still machined as far as I am aware anf because titanium is much harder, it takes longer to machine and causes tool wear at a much higher rate. We would be paying for the investment Apple have made. To what benefit it has for us as users remains to be seen.

Im not sure why this is a feature? Unless you are a materials scientist, who actually cares what the phones chassis is made from (unless it's like cheese or leaves)? The average man, or woman, just wants a functional device.
 
didn't apple say it was a titanium mix with aluminum? "First alloy of its kind" supposedly the aluminum helps to dispel heat quicker, either that or its cheaper. I wonder what the ratio of aluminum to titanium is..

My wedding ring is Titanium, I liked the design and feel of it. I bought it nearly 20 years ago now.

I’m ordering one, I’ve had the 13PM for 2 years. Fancy a change, fortunate enough to afford it (years ago I couldn’t). But the whole marketing BS is dialled up isn’t it? The chassis is still aluminium. Hoping the update is worthwhile.
It sure will be: worse battery life, the rest is the same…
 
Its obvious there is nothing new with this phone, if they make an ad for the frame material… which does not matter anway, because everone uses a case.

„From the edge of the universe“, this ad is soo ridiculous… It even makes no sense at all.

Marketing had some long nights with this one…
 


Apple today shared an ad for the iPhone 15 Pro, exclusively highlighting the new titanium finish of the devices.


The 38-second spot depicts a titanium fragment exploding into view and torpedoing through the Solar System towards the surface of the Earth. "From the edge of the universe... to the palm of your hand," reads the ad's tagline.
For the iPhone 15 Pro and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max, Apple is using a new titanium frame rather than a stainless steel frame, which cuts down on weight. The ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max are approximately nine percent lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max, yet the chassis is more durable.

The use of titanium on the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ also brings with it a change to the chassis finish. Previously, all Pro iPhones used heavily polished stainless steel with a mirror finish as the chassis material. The ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ has a brushed finish that is considerably less reflective than the finish of previous Pro iPhones, and is also less prone to fingerprints.

Apple's iPhone 15 and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus continue to feature a chassis made from aluminum. Pre-orders for all iPhone 15 models begin on Friday, September 15, with in-store availability beginning a week later on September 22.

For me the Titanium chassis has lost it's premium look, it looks as dull as the aluminium standard phones 😏
I like the lightness, very much dislike the dull look, regardless of how much the pro Apple techies try to tell us it's a fantastic look!

It's cheaper and it looks cheaper....just as dull as the standard aluminium 15's.
Apple is cutting corners, to keep the prices down and the cost to us is a non premium looking phone 😡

You only have to use your imagination if you didn't watch the iPhone presentation, or weren't paying attention. Apple flat out said the back of the phone was glass, that was easier to remove for easier repairability. I don't know why anyone would think the back of the phone was titanium.
