How? Apple said you can't collect my user's information through shady apps then Facebook and Google went "we'll see about that", they tried to outsmart Apple, they got caught and now Apple can rightfully punish them.

Because more people care about using Google and Facebook services than care about owning an iPhone.

It's likely this will be resolved by the end of the week.

Apple will hem and haw about how they can't use the certs this way. Execs at Google and FB will apologize. New certs will be issued.

In a way, this is good and bad. Good because Apple can stop these sorts of apps from being used. Bad because I'm not sure I'm comfortable with Apple having this much control over other large companies.

Apple doesn't have control over other large companies. Apple does have some control over how other large companies use the services that Apple offers.

The only group that won't suffer for it is Google, let's be real. I don't see Apple being able to make the average person care about developer agreements.

A voice of reason prevails. Apple controls their services which other large companies offer, it's no different than Google controlling the search results on Safari. I don't get the big deal here - worse comes to worse, they find different places to distribute internal apps (there are alternatives). I don't expect Google or FB apps to disappear from the App Store any time soon, or for this to be the first in many of Apple's so-called "control over large companies". Woof, settle down, kids!

So, Apple does have a pair!

I wondered if they
would chicken out with Google (who hated Google to the bitter end?), considering how much Apple uses their services.

Nice :apple:!

:)

I think it might be the other way around - they had to do it because they did it with Facebook. If they treated Google differently then Facebook could find a way to sue Apple for not treating them equally.

They can update their consumer facing apps... they just can’t distribute apps internally any more (outside of the App Store/TestFlight)

And this means their apps will have to be screened by Apple every time they want to deploy an update or new app.

Correct, be prepared for a lot of hyperbole. If a supermarket orders buns from a bakery specifying no sawdust in the recipe and they find sawdust in the buns well said restaurant can very well stop buying buns til the bakery cleans up their act. Consumers can buy other "buns" (like DDG) and forego the cheap blue donuts.

As far as I understood the articles, Google and Facebook both seem to be using a lot of Apple devices internally and not just for testing purposes. Given the size of those companies, they are probably among Apple’s biggest business customers. Loosing them as such would not be in Apple’s best interest so I guess they’ll get new certificates rather sooner than later.

This group needs to realize Apple is the top dog, not Google, not Facebook, period. You have access to over 1 billion customers and you abuse the ToS policies you deserve to be warned. This is a warning.

One of the reasons Apple is heavily building out their data centers is to have zero liability with Amazon AWS, Google and Microsoft.

Facebook doesn't survived w/o Apple. Google pays Apple an absolute fortune because it's an admission that a major portion of it's entire revenue stream comes off the consumers of Apple products.

They'll comply or watch their stocks crash and burn.

Update: In a statement to Bloomberg, Google said it is working with Apple to resolve the issue. "We're working with Apple to fix a temporary disruption to some of our corporate iOS apps, which we expect will be resolved soon."

Or Google, just admit how you abused the users privacy and you were caught. Now deal with the ramifications.

I wonder if Google will retaliate by withholding the rumored $9B/year they give Apple to look the other way on Google's other questionable practices by making Google the default search engine on iOS Safari.

Rumored? Double that $9 billion and you'll be closer to watch Google pays Apple to have access to this user base.

But TestFlight is not for deploying internal apps. That would an abuse of the rules for TestFlight.

They could use it to TEST internal apps that they don't mind exposing to the public on the App Store. Apple would still have to approve them. They are limited to 10,000 devices, which can be invited by email. 10,000 may not be enough for Google.

Google - nor Facebook - are unlikely to want to exposure their internal apps to the public. Of course, critical ones certainly require password login. But script kiddies would go wild trying to hack them. And many internal apps may not have any authentication at all. (Say, today's lunch menu.)

Okay buddy. People care SO much more about using apps that have been found to be sneakily trying to not only gather data under false pretenses, but ALSO are put out by companies that appear to be lying when they sign a contract that they will instead run away from a platform that is overtly working to protect their privacy. Good luck betting on that one.
